Learn how to conduct Night time land navigation or Orienteering at night by learning how to use a lens attic compass. It’s an easy process to master your ability to use a compass at night by presenting your compass and trusting in your ability.
On the bezel ring, each click moves your bezel three degrees. That means there are 120 clicks total.
To determine how many clicks to make, figure out the difference between your magnetic azimuth and 360 - divide by three - then turn that many clicks counterclockwise. If your azimuth is over 180 degrees, you can reverse the process and turn the bezel ring to the right as discussed and demonstrated in the video.
Going to EFMB this week and not gonna lie im nervous for night Land nav, thank you for this information!
You got this! If you haven’t, check out my other content in my navigation playlist. Just remember to double check your work, preset your compass, and trust your pace count.
If you have any questions, let me know!
Getting ready for RSAP with the PA National Guard and these videos are helping me freshen up. Thank you sir
You got this!
Love that lantern on your bench, man. Love land nav, too.
Yeah I got lucky acquiring that one!
I've been using your videos to help me review while at BLC. Thanks for posting your content.
Can't believe we missed this one. Thanks for sharing 🍻
This is fantastic. Great tips for EFMB prep.
Glad it helped Ron. Hope you check out my other content. Look forward to continuing the conversation.
Love your videos. Very professional soldier...
Thanks Carl!
Great video. Haven't use a lensic copass in awhile. AWESOME refresher. Thx
Glad it was helpful Jesse!
Fantastic upload. Thank you man.
I love my Cammenga 3H. I sleep with it.
Thank you. Very nice explanation. I can use this!
Thanks brother!
So if your azimuth is below 180 degrees you go counter clockwise and if it's greater than 280 you turn clockwise?
thanks for sharing. i have to admit your daytime use video that you were aiming at a post made sense to me.
this one i had no idea what the math was for. i may never have to use a compass and at 45 yrs old i have not. lol. but im gonna watch this one again and see if i can put together the terminology and reasons for the math. and believe me no disrespect, just chiming in. i've learned many things on this here youtube!
Thanks for the comments Jared!
First and foremost thank you for your service. I was a Marines and i gotta say your version of land navigation makes more sense. I think i just needed more practice and one on one time. The USMC is definitely in short supply of both. lol Anyways I’ve watch probably four of your videos which i love. But only one skimmed over declination. And I feel that is a crucial part of land navigation. If you haven’t done a video on it there should be one. My question is how do you find your declination without a map or something like that to tell you. Again thanks for the great videos.
Shaun, thanks for comments and sharing some time with me. Semper Fi- 95-03! Been in the Army since 2010. It’s the same, young troopers need more time, I do what I can. Planning a video on declination as well!

If you don't have a map declination does NOT matter ...
easy to follow tutorial
Excellent tutorial Stokerman. Not sure how I missed this land nav video, but, getting caught up now.
No worries! Glad it was helpful!
When you use the bezel ring and you rotate to line up the North seeking arrow, doesn't the North seeking arrow always point North? Please explain what is going on with the arrow. Your video is the most informative, but I am still confused.
Ernesto, good question. I’ll try to work up another vid in response but here’s the breakdown
Step 1 - face the direction you want to go
Step 2 - rotate the bezel ring so the tritium marker is inline with the north seeking arrow
Step 3 - move and ensure those two markers from step two stay aligned
Because the north seeking arrow is always going to face north, we can use that to our advantage, because there is a fixed black index line - call it our 12 o’clock - and when the compass is preset it will help keep us moving straight.
Hope that helped friend!
Trekking/hiking after sunset is a dangerous activity for numerous reasons and best avoided by the average Joe.
So true James!
@STOKERMATIC Ok so dumb question lol in lieu of doing the math can I use the same method as you demonstrated during the day in which you align the fixed index line with your magnetic azimuth then rotate the bezel tritium marker to align with the north seeking arrow?
Not dumb at all. Yes you can.
The purpose of the technique in this video is for when you can’t see the readings.
Thanks!
Great Vid!
Thanks Don!
What if your compass doesn’t click though?..?
Thanks, I got a land navigation prac ap tomorrow and I needed this refresher
Glad it helped!
Hey Stoker, really appreciate your nav vids (it's all I've had time to watch). Can you tell me the title and /or name or provide a link of the framed poster over your left shoulder. I saw the word "Definition" and some of what looks like the ranks, but couldn't see enough to do a google search to locate the poster / picture to obtain one. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your time! It’s Definition of Rank. images.app.goo.gl/NC6Efm45ikYFXPpTA should take you to an image.
How do you know whether to rotate the bezel ring clockwise or counterclockwise?
Zara, great question! That would depend on which direction you were trying to go. If you had to change directions and the new azimuth was higher than your current one, you would turn it clockwise. Counterclockwise if it was less.
I hope that helps! If not, check out one of my other compass videos that goes in depth on the features and operations of a compass - or - leave a follow up question and I'll try again!
Stoker
STOKERMATIC thank you that answers my question. I appreciate your videos they are a lot more helpful than any of the instruction I have gotten in the Army. Five years and I have never used the bezel ring...
Zara! 1st - thank you! 2nd OH NO! I hate that nobody has instructed you well. When you use the bezel ring to preset your compass it changes everything and makes it so much easier!! Especially at night!
Glad the content had been helpful
Do you know there's also a way use the mirror and north the turn through the first eye lines up to you see the sun at the top of the other eye and read the clock through the reflection is on point.because 60^20 =365615844006297600000000000000000000

It's not hard. It's just annoying. When you have a pack on, full kit on, a weapon. Walking through crappy terrain. Spiders. Falling into a ditch and laying there contemplating life. Hahaha fun times....
What if your azimuth is not divisible by 3?
Just round to the nearest click.
@@STOKERMATIC thanks!!
