Actually, it was the heat from the firebox causing Thomas' eyes to melt. A little fun fact, this was actually a real thing. When the Strasburg Railroad was turning Porter #15 into Thomas, the eyes started to melt whenever the engine's fire was lit. Luckily, this didn't happen in public, and the melting problem was quickly fixed
