- It’s not everyday that a masterpiece is made. It’s not every month, or every year. But sometimes, just sometimes, a masterpiece is never made. Does that make sense? No. And neither do these movies.
Join me as I venture forth the swamp that is Disney live action films of the 2000s. An era of unprecedented creativity, and uh, failure. A time where animals talked and pirates sailed, but best of all, the country bears.

Disney's problem is a lot of their original films these last two decades... are quite simply shitty films. Originality certainly isn't dead, but perhaps the artistic talent of Disney writers is.
I think it's both, compare the box office of original projects to the ones of franchise films, there is a huge difference

Add to that is Disney's implied sabotage. Films like Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are critically decent films that "suffered" from a lack of marketing. Info on the ground says that Disney deliberately bomb those just to get rid of their traditional animation studio...
@Jack Louis it's more like they've become afraid of failure. why step out onto that kinda sketchy looking branch when you can just hang onto to the trunk of the tree. a lot of media companies have fallen into that same rut. for example bethesda. why make a decent fallout or elder scrolls when they can just rehash or "update" skyrim or fallout 4. (which graphically is really good. story wise it's crap)

The fly in the ointment though, is that those movies that bombed also sucked. Disney's Marvel movies at least adapt storylines or story ideas that have been shown to have an audience, even if the movie is average it still has been proven to resonate somewhat.

“Holes” still holds up as one of the best live-action Disney movies of all time for anyone looking for something good from this era. The cast is sprawling, it’s one of the best adaptations of a children’s book to film and apart from a couple of the cgi-lizards, it looks great from start to finish. Are there any other ones I’m forgetting about?

@@MajorMasonGaming Same here I thought the first and second movie were alright but the third on I don't know if it was good or bad but I remember the first and only time I'd ever watched it and it's the climax of the film and was thinking "this a bit off" I also had a same feeling about Fern Gully two which what ever you would say about the first film but I hope we can all agree the second one is a DOWNGRADE.
I probably would have a agreed as a kid. I got the good disney shit during my early youth, then was aware the whole time when all the shit stuff poured out for movies and kids cartoons. Every single one felt like lazy fart humour to me. (I wanted shit like Pirates of the Caribbean, and star wars the clones wars, kids shows/movies with some real plot and story or at least didn’t feel like cringe “kid” humour. The “kid humour” of that era constantly made me cringe as a kid, it was simply embarrassing cause I thought that’s what “normal kids” liked, and I wanted nothing to do with it.)

That, and the few times companies do try to use an original idea, they often try to do it using a heavily unoriginal formula and so it comes out shit. And the people that try to do original stuff without the formulas have no budget and no talent, and so it still comes out shit.
Essentially, we've been conditioned to see originality as shit because everything original in media usually comes out shit.

Despite doing live action movies for decades, Disney only occasionally made a truly good one with the rest being pretty stale. Just like 3D animation in its early days, it just wasn’t something they were comfortable with but kind of had to do since traditional animation wasn’t as popular anymore. This could be why they bought companies which would make live action movies for them. Disney’s rocky 2000’s doesn’t justify them becoming this all powerful overlord that didn’t have to try anymore(credit to schrafrillas for that phrase(and sorry if I misspelled that)), but it does explain why such a company would crave so much franchise power and would start to get really lost in its greed and branding.
No matter how much The Walt Disney Corporation owns, it will ALWAYS have to try with creativity and writing quality! Yes, I know most live-action films branded Walt Disney are cheesy, forgettable comedies like The Princess Diaries or Sky High, both of which I really loved, but the spirit of Walt Disney would hate for the animation studio named after him to get complacent and creatively bankrupt, and I can not conceive that a person or an entertainment business would be that successful that they can just give up on what gave them that success in the first place. It is why people hate Nickelodeon for canceling good new shows not branded Spongebob or The Loud House too early when Nickelodeon used to have so much more variety in the 1990s. May 10, 2022, 12:31pm
There is so much original IP out there waiting for a movie.
Movie makers just do not want to take risks anymore and with that fail anyway by being horribly generic
is not the 'makers' of the movies who decide what is made. its the marketing team and the shareholder board. the movie directors and scriptwriters can only present ideas hoping for the best. And sadly is the best way to save money lost in passion proyects like treasure planet and lone ranger.
That is it, the rejection of risk taking. (Although like the other comment said, it’s really on the corporate end). What’s interesting is that there are plenty of movies that are considered classic which actually performed badly at the box office. This is likely seen as an unacceptable financial risk, and they (try) to stick to formulas they know will bring profit, independent of how good or original the content is.
Shawshank redemption is one of the best movies ever made, and it did bad at the box office. No company wants to gamble several million dollars on a good movie if they don’t think it will be profitable. That definitely sucks for us though.

The problem is cost. Some of the biggest movies to come out every year are effects-heavy sci-fi and fantasy movies, which are incredibly expensive to make. Why spend $250 million making a space adventure movie, when Star Wars is a recognizable brand? Sure, Solo barely broke even (which is shocking for an entry in one of the highest grossing franchises of all time), but I can guarantee they more than made up for it with merchandise sales. Every time a new Star Wars comes out, you can walk into any store and find at least one product with that logo slapped on it, plus it's much easier to convince kids to buy a Han Solo action figure, than it is to get them to buy a character from a new franchise who is like Han.
@@CurtisAlfeld The only thing "shocking" about the fact that "Solo" broke even is the fact that it even did that well. They took one of the coolest characters of all time and reduced him to a sniveling twerp who was basically just along for the ride. They couldn't even let him keep his piloting skills. They explained those away by uploading SJWbot 9000's brain into the Falcon, implying that half of what we saw Han do in the original trilogy was the ship, not the man. People were rightfully wary of the series after Disney flubbed two sequels and missed the mark on "Rogue One". They didn't show up on opening weekend, and it flopped in the following weeks once word got out how dirty they did Han.

Hot take: People are watching less new movies in theatres because sometimes they suck, and you don't want to spend $20 (+ more $ on overpriced food) and 2 hours on something that might suck when Netflix is a thing. With Netflix, if you watch something and it's shit, you can stop watching it knowing you lost a half hour, but it's not like you lost money on the movie, just watch something else. Disney started getting nervous, tried remaking some of it's old stuff, and discovered that people are more likely to go to the theatre to watch something they are familiar with and have more confidence in. They also found out that when you give old movies the late 2010's live action treatment with some dramatic music, they really like it. It's like watching something for nostalgia but then having it actually live up to the hype. However, neither of these strategies were viable long-term solutions, so Disney created Disney plus not just so people can watch these movies whenever, but so they can keep trying at making new movies that mostly suck but are occasionally really good without worrying about the threatre problem. As a result, Disney might actually start making new content like in the 2000s in maybe few years.
Damn movie tickets are expensive in some places. On some days I'm able to get a ticket,soda and popcorn for about the equivalent of 5 bucks.
That, and at one time we didn't need to worry about bed bugs from the seats, 3+ hour long "epics", 5th sequels of the same things, unique plots, unique actors, hand drawn artwork, Elton John and it didn't cost a full hour of min wage labour to afford a single order of popcorn, 2 more hrs for the ticket, and another hr for transportation to and from. The working poor used to be able to afford to take their kid and friends for a theater birthday party, now it costs half a month's rent to take a dozen kids to a movie...
If Fox had separately sold their animation division to WB. There’d be some jokes on Family Guy where Peter is bummed out about not being bought by Disney.
Sadly Blue Sky is already defunct now.
The show would probably be way less neutered now if it was owned by WB instead of Disney

They were always trying to get rid of animation. The massive success of Pirates and Pixar just cemented the deal. It actually says a lot about how horrible Disney management is that it took them four decades to kill animation, when they were TRYING to. But they kept having to default back to animation because they lost money on everything else. Then they just happened to trip into the Pixar deal, after Apple and others gave up on it. And they were also against Pirates and Marvel films, until after they became a success. A good management tactic with Disney is, whatever the managers want to do, do the exact opposite. It's guaranteed to be a success.
I dont understand why you would actively try to eliminate the bread and butter of your company. I can at least sort of understand it today now that they have stuff like marvel and star wars and all the live action remakes but back then? What the hell else did they have besides animation?
@@JohnDoe-wb6vl to be fair, we live in a timeline where once Cartoon Network got big in the 2010s such as with original works from Adventure Time to Steven Universe, they stop acknowledging most of their 90s and 2000s hits that built their network. A few that did get acknowledged such as Powerpuff Girls in the 2010s got a reboot no one asked for

Tbh Disney lost It's "magic" a long time ago, they started milking their movies and flopped. Pixar, Marvel and Lucasarts saved them

I wouldnt say lucasfilm saved them, I believe the disney trilogy barely made enough to repay the price it was worth (three movies had a total of like 4.0-4.6 B and disney bought lucasfilms for 4B) and considering that it was the biggest and most popular american film IP to ever exist its quite a flop in my book

And now Pixar sucks, the future of the MCU in terms of quality is highly uncertain, and star wars is licking its wounds on disney+ and will be stuck there for a while
Disney sucks, that’s for sure, but I’d say originality isn’t dead, just dormant. People are going to get sick of the fifth Lion King remake and the trend will be more toward originality. We’re seeing that more in TV than anything right now, but movies (and games for that matter) will eventually milk the remake cow dry.
I think remakes in games are an entirely different topic. Think about it, there's not much that aged badly in terms of film as compared to games, the aspects that most stick out of old movies are visual effects and color in some cases, but they aren't unwatchable or unavailable as it happens with games.
Some games had great ideas 20 years ago when 3D was starting to kick, but technology limited part of their execution. Now with competent remasters of games we can not only make them prettier to look at, but also make them run better and as consequence play better, or we can also get ideas of mechanics that weren't too greatly executed and refine them. Not to mention, there's the issue of availability since with movies you don't really need specific hardware most of the times.

Disney killed originality. Since everyone has to compete against them, they need to go with safe bets rather than creating anything original or exciting. Those things seem to only happen by accident now rather than just seeing what sticks to the walls

I have an old memory from when I was a kid of watching a movie on TV while I had a fever in my dark living room, at night, with nothing on but the CRT TV and all I remember is that the movie had live action bears and I had no idea what was happening in the plot. It slipped my mind until I got a flashback while watching this video and I am now 95% convinced that the movie was The Country Bears.
I watched it when I was a kid. I’m well convinced that the country bears are still technically uncanny valley animatronics!

I was 16 when the movie came out. The aesthetics of the GRID was so freaking cool to my teenage brain, i ended up seeing the trailer multiple times. Great art direction and proper vision got it past the goal-post (Olivia Wilde was pretty cute in the movie as well i guess.)

I heard Bob Iger had a chapter in his memoir called “innovate or die.” I guess for him, “innovate” meant “buy other stuff that’s already good”, which is not usually the definition of that word. Usually innovation requires creativity, but not in old Bobby’s book (no pun intended). But hey, Disney always made money by taking stuff that already existed, Disney-fiying it and making sure no one else could make any money off it. cough Public Domain cough cough.
To be fair, Disney cant own the Arabian tales for Aladdin, Cinderella and Alice In Wonderland despite their versions printing money.
Originality is dead. But why. I see the same trends in gaming as well. I will always go and play the latest WW2 large scale multiplayer shooter (cod got old for me at Black ops 1) but look at games like Death Stranding as weird and unlikable by default. It's not what I think I want. And that is the modern consumer problem. We have grown so used to the norms of "artistic" media that anything that dares to be different will be rejected at first and will only later, possibly years later. Be realized for what it tried to do.

I don't think Death Stranding's failure was due to people wanting to "just play CoD BlOps", but rather because the game itself is simply bad. You can have an artistic game, but it still needs to be a *game*, something enjoyable. A good example of both, from the same company, is Shadow of The Colossus and The Last Guardian from Team Ico.
Both are works of art but I'd argue Shadow is the only fun one, because while The Last Guardian is certainly a work of art, it plays like dog shit.
I don't the issue in games is the death of originality, but rather originality is hard to make fun *and more importantly* trends reign supreme. Just look at how many games are trying to "open world" or like Dark Souls because businesses think that's the hip, money making thing, when if they just went with what they wanted and designed it to be enjoyable it'd be even better,

I think that trend of "liking some art long after it's produced" is not modern or consumerist. Look at all the artists and musicians in past history who died fameless and penniless, only to be glorified for their work post-mortem. I think Mozart and Van Gogh are examples, but I'm saying that off the top of my head so I might be wrong.
People say creativity in the video game industry is dead but literally look at the Indie game industry. Right now were seeing more originality than ever.
We didn't have AAA 3rd Party Devs until the Mid 2000s so stop focusing on the Ubisofts and Electronic Arts and the Activisions - they mostly just exist to milk IPs. Focus on the Indie games which because of Steam can now be self published. There's absolute gold out there.

I always thought it was interesting how after the Disney Renaissance in the 90s, 2000s Disney reverted back to making family comedies very similar to what they were doing in the late 60, 70s and early 80s (the Disney Dark Age).

I’ve spent a half a decade hoping to be reunited with that strange bear movie I saw so long ago. So much time had passed since I saw it I thought it was just a dream, but it was too fucking weird to just be a dream.

I saw the country bears in the thumbnail preview or something. My mind got so confused. I suddenly started remembering that. I don't think I even ever watched it. But something about the weird costume designs has always bugged me. I think I remember them from VHS ads that I was too lazy as a kid to try and fast forward through. Since you always had to be on the lookout that the movie doesn't start.

A short, less than a second clip of The Blues Brothers injected into the bear segment without any mention was a stroke of genius.
Disney's animation studios are where it's at for originality imo. Frozen 2 aside, they're all really great...I get the feeling that the people working there are very enthusiastic about their craft, whereas what's probably being described in this video is the corporate side of Disney that just buys properties and fine tunes things for maximum profitability rather than creative integrity.

Well Disney Television Animation has great original IPs, and very good adaptations as well
The problem is that they stopped producing animation and put massive budgets into standalone live action movies... if those movies were animated instead, they probably would have done much better

I would like to add a note,many companies are know getting into the curating content business,whereby the release a bigger budget versions of Artists/creators I.P. Many indie comic/webtoons are being offered serialization,youtube channels are being turned into full series.I feel in the coming years studios will be more interested in buying an established base with a smaller following,but can be groomed for success(like early record labels with singers)with the added caviot that they know what to expect as most shows that are picked up often have high engagement.So the future may just be make something and as they say get courted by people with money bags,walk away with money and do it again.

It seems like people are looking more for security when going to see movies. So going with the tried and true properties that they already know makes some sense. Pair that with streaming services where people can see anything new to them whenever they want and going to see a completely new property in theaters seems like a bit of a financial risk compared to near guaranteed enjoyment. The urge to see something new just isn't there anymore. We might see a change if these properties ever become old and tired, but until then we will have to wait and see.
