Oda said in a recent interview that he heavily based gear 5th of Tom and Jerry and that he has made this form so cartoony because he actually hates how most authors draw only serious expressions in most manga nowadays. He litteratly made gear 5th to have fun, another reminder that Oda doesnt back down and writes the story he wants to write.
The pure white of G5 just oozes the pure radiance of freedom that Luffy continously carries throughout the entire series. I absolutely love this design more than all of the Gears so far.

5th gear is how you say it in english, I mean I get it you wana show your tribe you belong so you take a phrase from Japanese that makes no sense in english because it speaks to your tribe. May everybody just learns Japanese and you can use words in sequence that make sense. I have a really good theory about Dragon devil fruit As a Hindu I know that Luffy devil fruit gear 5 is inspired by Hindu Lord Hanuman, Lord Hanuman is also known as 'Pavanputra' which means'Son of Wind', so it makes sense that Dragon devil fruit grants him power to control wind.
That would also be a much better fruit for him on the seas than a storm fruit, since he could control the airflow and give any ship he’s on a max speed boost. Equally he could change the air pressure enough to cause storms
Gear 2nd: He forces the blood in his body to pump at a much higher rate, thereby getting oxygen to areas of his body at a much faster rate. An increase in oxygen comes with it an increase in temperature as well. With his body all rubbery, his body is able to keep up with the increase in oxygen demand relatively easily. The steam coming off his body, is his sweat evaporating almost immediately in an attempt to cool the body down.
I always liked this pseudo scientific explanation of Gear 2nd, but I do think the new general explanation of "Luffy just imagined what would help here and it somehow works out" fits his character better.
@@mittelz5976 I think Luffy is very smart in terms of fighting tactics he came up with many very useful techniques so i think its possible that he thought of something like gear 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Now that I think about it, Luffy's fighting style is actually quite similar to Hanuman's. Hanuman is also someone who can grow, shrink, jump crazy and overall, can do pretty much anything he can think of. I can't think of any other god in hindu mythology, whose powers are simply put; wacky, silly and defies logic.
Gear second was actually explained really well by blueno and makes perfect sense if your whole body is rubberized, I don’t know where this idea that it doesn’t make sense came from, by making his legs into pumps or his arms using there elastic properties he can cause the blood to flow through his body much faster increasing stamina reaction time and muscle performance exactly like doping a real world thing, except luffy since his heart and veins are rubber can do it even faster, this like doping increases your internal temperature causing his sweat to evaporate from his body, the increased blood flow also explains the red tint like when you blush. It’s actually very competently explained for a shonen

The fact that gear 5 is essentially the power of imagination, it makes sense how his fist lights on fire with Red Hawk, since he was inspired by Ace and what he could do
Gear 2nd does make sense though. One of the limits of running is that your muscles dont have enough oxygen causing you to be slower and get tired faster. So in theory gear 2nd supplies oxygen to luffy's muscles thus making him faster.
1 thing I love from gear 5th is that the sounds he makes by punching and stuff actually appear in the world of one piece its not just the manga trying to create a sound
I've thought his DF was controlled by his imagination since the G5 reveal. It explains so many things way back in the beginning such as when Crocodile impaled him and later luffy leaked water like a cartoon character from his belly when he was full. On another note, Luffy's DF has the same swirls and Sanji's eyebrows. The Dark-Dark Fruit has the same swirls and Germa 66. We know Judge is connected to Vegapunk. Maybe more relation between DF's and them.
I had already set my theory on having Luffy extending the power of "freedom of imagination" to his allies in the final battle of the series, nice to have the confirmation he can do it

I think Luffy's Gear 5th affects others only by proxy. Because the fruit by design grants freedom, and nothing will hinder or stop its freedom, so it goes where it wants. I think Kaido's eyes not bursting and instead going back to normal helps this.

Each gear is Luffy enhancing a certain organ system (circulatory for gear second, skeletal for gear third, and muscular for gear fourth) and I like to think that gear 5 is Luffy enhancing his mind by unleashing his imagination and accomplishing what he sets his mind to

maybe during the fight with blackbeard he'll fall into that madness of the fruit. if blackbeard's darkness pulls in and destroys everything, maybe it could even work to suck the joy outta luffy during gear 5th. there would be lots of good subtext and metaphors to the fight happening (which is when one piece fights are at their best).

You know on the "awakening allows the animal to take over you" I think Kaido actually did use his awakening too. It's very subtle and I could just be wrong but at the end of Kaido's drunk modes he enters a form called the homicidal drunk mod. This form has a few different design elements from Kaido's normal hybrid form: 1. Kaido has his dragon eye brows 2. Kaido's eyes look like they're a rinnegan 3. Kaido looks extremely bulkier. 4. Kaido's nose is more rounded. The reason I say this could be his awakening is due to the side effects of zoan awakenings, when Kaido cut loose in this homicidal mode for a while he lost himself in the battle and ended up accidentally "killing" Luffy after the CP0 agent interrupted the battle. In the last moments of his battle with gear 5 Kaido also enters this form again as he tells Luffy that haki is above all and these blows Luffy can't absorb/morph around like the previous ones and it forces Luffy to use black hardening for the first time and then charge up the Bajrang gun. Also before Kaido starts drinking he tells Luffy that he's drinking because he's acknowledged his strength and that he will become stronger from drinking. The drinking could be a catalyst that allows him to have more control over his awakening.
Think about this: since Luffy is so innocent and naive, he always believed Usopp's stories. Could that mean that maybe Usopp would be super OP if affected by Luffy's power?
I think instead of taking every word a little to factual just watch him do what he does, so far it has been extending his rubber powers to just about anything, he hasn't displayed any reality warping in that sense. So i wouldn't go to far with the toon force yada just yet. It's a perfect power to cut loose with the cartoonish style Oda has been waiting to draw.
He also has greater control of his own body to the point of exceeding mere rubber capabilities like his giant mode. He also seems to be immune to piercing damage as scene with his face melding to Kaido's club spikes. But yeah, i agree that it's kind of pointless to take every descriptive word literally.
@@calculator91 yeah his rubber powers got significantly stronger and extends to other people and the environment, but kaido states himself during the fight that he's still weak to slashing attacks and luffy also gets severely hurt by kaidos both Thunder bagua doom something and dragon twister which doesnt really strike me as omnipotence and more so goes in line with a power upp in his already existing attributes and an extension of them.
The only thing i wish Oda elaborated on was Law's interactions with Hawkins. their powers have such interesting effects on each other, perhaps i would've wracked Oda's brain to figure out how to make a satisfying battle between them which is why he off screened it. It wouls certainly make Hawkin's apparent removal in the story more palitable
the thing about the eyes and toon like eye pop thing. oda has done this a lot throughout the series. in scenes that have nothing to do with luffy too. remember ussop on dressrossa? he was actually the first time we saw this new eyes screwing out of the head look, it was used to make sugar pass out. he usually did not have the eyes swirl around like a cork screw untill this moment. i really think its more of just an art choice. i mean so many characters long before this with no contact to luffy had eye pop out scenes throught the show, enemies friends luffy himself. it really doesnt seem right if that is a consequence of his fruit. doesnt make sense to me. also not sure why people think this is a new toon form the show has been super toony from the get go. sure its a lil more at random it seems cause of the setting, but its not new for one piece or luffy.
I feel the same way about the eye pops and even when they're pissed their teeth turn all sharp n s#!+. One Piece has always been Zany, but the eye pops are different and consistent now...the same kind of eye pops associated with Gear 5th. Luffy even did it when. He saw his new bounty from Kid. So I'd say there's a difference and agree that Luffy is effecting his environment. He pulled the ground as a rubber shield, his fist was obviously sinking into Kaido's body more with his punches and the famous punch through the head. Kaido's body looked cartoony as Luffy rumbled inside of him. So on one hand, I totally agree that Luffy has paramecium properties with his awakening, I also agree that the cartoony effects have always been present in this manga due to its own very nature of being a Zany Pirate Adventure.
it would be an interesting touch if luffy got overwhelmed with the nature of his df. It's like his body gets limitless freedom while he himself loses his own free will. Since his ultimate goal is to become the most free, it would make sense for the end of the story to feature him struggling with his own free will so that it would be more satisfying when he finally achieves this goal.
Regarding Hanuman, there is also the fascinating tale about him turning his body gigantic so that he can carry a hill while flying. Maybe Oda will use this bit later on.

Edit: I'd like to point out that there IS a train of logic behind Gear 2, in that Luffy uses his rubber body to pump his blood faster, as seen when he smacks his legs to activate it, the steam comes as a result of the increased body heat from his increase blood flow. ...Or at least, that's the impression I always got out of it, still seems like a pretty out-there way of using a rubber body and not one that I or anyone else would think of. Edit2: Hearing about backstories cut for time and space really breaks my heart. Oda has so many stories he wants to tell for these characters but there are just too many of them and only so many pages in a single chapter to tell them all. Oda's ambitious when it comes to his characters and their stories are both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. Original Comment: I'm glad Oda tried to set the record straight with Gear 5, though to be honest it still sounds extremely overpowered, which seems to be the case with most Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits. At the very least, he said that Luffy's Devil Fruit awakening at all is "a miracle", i.e. it was unlikely to happen up until it did. I think this is Oda trying to suggest that it's not like Luffy had these God-like powers and could have used them at any time in the past, thus undermining the tense and dramatic moments Luffy went through throughout his journey. I also like the idea of the potential risk of the "animal" within Luffy's Zoan Devil Fruit potentially overtaking him, could be a source of potential conflict, should he use Gear 5 again; like, Luffy is so focused on being goofy or laughing that he forgets what's really important to him or something along those lines. I was already happy with the whole "Luffy becomes a literally Golden Age cartoons God" angle, but Oda giving these extra details and risks that come with it only make me more happy with this decision. Really looking forward to how these new powers get used in the final saga!

So if he does affects others it effectively takes away resistance and the hardness of enemies skins like kaido and BM and makes it ineffective, cuz he just makes it rubbery and does more damage, I'd like to think it does more damage by not only hitting but when the opponent it does back to normal from being rubber it does some more damage

Hello just subscribed started getting into one piece a couple months ago used to be a big naruto fan but that ended and i dont care for how they handled it anymore. So now im jumping into this vast world and thanks to ur videos the lore has been easy to take in this is a fun sea.
I love the fact that Luffy has a child like imagination and trough out the whole series we where gradually watching his imagination and his devil fruit (joy boy aka. Nika) was affecting all of his gears and moves in the series. Wow honestly the best manga ever!
So, now we know Luffy's fruit imagination based. Obviously the practical side of his fire attacks is explained. But I think they came from his idolisation of Ace and prolly developed from luffy wanting to be more like him. Or even like an homage
Fun fact about gear second. The steam effect is actually realistic IRL. Although the requirements are different. Basically I got it many time when I used to do intense swimming training in an outdoor pool during winter. The intense body heat against the cold air created steam very similar to gear 2. The more you know
Speaking of Luffy doing things that didn't make sense, I was always a bit confused by Gear Third. I get that he's blowing air into himself but for that to work he would need to make a hole. But if that's what he's doing, how is it that the air didn't just escape through that same hole?
he’s not blowing into a hole, he takes a huge breath and then uses his thumb to stop him from breathing out, and then he positions that huge breath into the right place. the thumb is more like a cork than a hole
This does raise an interesting question... is the wacky nature of the One Piece World due to the actions of a previous Nika Nika fruit user? There are a lot of hybrid creatures, races like the long-arm tribes, places and rules of physics that are inconsistent, and even really random things that are just accepted. And since almost all of world history is lost or hidden...

I'm a little confused about your Gear 2 argument. Like... It's obviously using his body's rubber capabilities. Even if that is way too vague for you, why did you say no one knows what the steam is? It's sweat. Very obviously just sweat cooking off because the accelerated blood flow heats him up.
I mean people in the real world steam when there really hot compared to the temperature of the room/weather. I always thought that he steamed because his body was that hot not the sweat itself
I think a good take away from road to laugh tale is that not every character is going to get fully fleshed out. Stuff is gonna get left out for the sake of the greater story and it’s something we’re just going to have to accept.

If the W.G. named it the Stone Stone fruit or anything else Luffy would have turned into something else. Maybe Oda could release a "Silmarillion" like book after he finishes One Piece. This way we don't get awful pacing due to Ode including absolutely everything but still get all the details he wants to add to his story.
Am I the only person finding Shanks more and more terrifying with every details released ever since he gave Luffy the straw hat? I don’t think it’s just combat and haki. I suspect he has diplomatic power with origins from dragons or has crazy damning knowledge. I mean he just said, it’s time to claim the one piece. Claim. And just terrified an admiral with his haki. It’s making me see Marineford, his encounter with Kaido, five elders, Gorosei and Whitebeard very different. His power is high. I really hope Oda writes him and his crew in such a way that it lives up to all the set up.

No it ain't going to be that way , Oda won't cast the dragon ball effect in One Piece.It's definitely one of the most powerful fruit but still , Haki can counter it and it doesn't nessecarily eliminate other powerful fruit like Soru Soru , Magu Magu , Pika Pika , Yami Yami , Uo Uo Ryu Model , Hito Hito Daibutsu Model and more.

I love gear 5th but what we saw was so short. It was almost like a tease. Like when we first saw snake man. Would be nice if he now just goes straight to awakening form. Would be no need for the other forms, but still fun to watch them.

@4:40 I've always thought the way it was explained is he's overloading his metabolic function the steam you see is the moisture in his blood evaporating as he speeds up his heart rate to around 200bpm. That would make his reaction time strength speed, ect way faster.

Toon force rules! If you're a toon, you have infinite stamina, but if you're a human using toon force like Michael Jordon or Eddie Valiant or The Mask, you've got limited stamina. Toon force is not literally unbeatable however! If instead of fighting it, you lean into the gags and subvert them, you can defeat it! You simply have to be funnier than the toon you're facing against. Eddie Valiant managed this (plus a mild touch of toon force to survive his own self-harm) to kill the weasel gang by making them laugh to death.
Theres so much info and extra stuff in these that i think toei would love to sink their teeth into Because it means that they dont have to do the usual slow pacing and dont have to worry about catching up, whilst giving us canon, original content

Now that I think about it, Luffy's fighting style is actually quite similar to Hanuman's. Hanuman is also someone who can grow, shrink, jump crazy and overall, can do pretty much anything he can think of. I can't think of any other god in hindu mythology, whose powers are simply put; wacky, silly and defies logic.
Hanuman is also well-known for being a white monkey.

Gear second was actually explained really well by blueno and makes perfect sense if your whole body is rubberized, I don’t know where this idea that it doesn’t make sense came from, by making his legs into pumps or his arms using there elastic properties he can cause the blood to flow through his body much faster increasing stamina reaction time and muscle performance exactly like doping a real world thing, except luffy since his heart and veins are rubber can do it even faster, this like doping increases your internal temperature causing his sweat to evaporate from his body, the increased blood flow also explains the red tint like when you blush. It’s actually very competently explained for a shonen

Gear 2nd does make sense though. One of the limits of running is that your muscles dont have enough oxygen causing you to be slower and get tired faster. So in theory gear 2nd supplies oxygen to luffy's muscles thus making him faster.

I've thought his DF was controlled by his imagination since the G5 reveal. It explains so many things way back in the beginning such as when Crocodile impaled him and later luffy leaked water like a cartoon character from his belly when he was full. On another note, Luffy's DF has the same swirls and Sanji's eyebrows. The Dark-Dark Fruit has the same swirls and Germa 66. We know Judge is connected to Vegapunk. Maybe more relation between DF's and them.
I had already set my theory on having Luffy extending the power of "freedom of imagination" to his allies in the final battle of the series, nice to have the confirmation he can do it

In the Hindu religion, Hanuman was said to “lift a whole island/mountain to save someone from inside from an illness”. I find this comparable to Luffy going into his giant form to help stop the island and save people.

I think Luffy's Gear 5th affects others only by proxy. Because the fruit by design grants freedom, and nothing will hinder or stop its freedom, so it goes where it wants. I think Kaido's eyes not bursting and instead going back to normal helps this.

maybe during the fight with blackbeard he'll fall into that madness of the fruit. if blackbeard's darkness pulls in and destroys everything, maybe it could even work to suck the joy outta luffy during gear 5th. there would be lots of good subtext and metaphors to the fight happening (which is when one piece fights are at their best).

You know on the "awakening allows the animal to take over you" I think Kaido actually did use his awakening too. It's very subtle and I could just be wrong but at the end of Kaido's drunk modes he enters a form called the homicidal drunk mod. This form has a few different design elements from Kaido's normal hybrid form:
1. Kaido has his dragon eye brows
2. Kaido's eyes look like they're a rinnegan
3. Kaido looks extremely bulkier.
4. Kaido's nose is more rounded.
The reason I say this could be his awakening is due to the side effects of zoan awakenings, when Kaido cut loose in this homicidal mode for a while he lost himself in the battle and ended up accidentally "killing" Luffy after the CP0 agent interrupted the battle. In the last moments of his battle with gear 5 Kaido also enters this form again as he tells Luffy that haki is above all and these blows Luffy can't absorb/morph around like the previous ones and it forces Luffy to use black hardening for the first time and then charge up the Bajrang gun.
Also before Kaido starts drinking he tells Luffy that he's drinking because he's acknowledged his strength and that he will become stronger from drinking. The drinking could be a catalyst that allows him to have more control over his awakening.

Kaido main enemy in wano is plot armor itself. Awakening is write off in his book because the author doesn't know how to beat him if he has one

I think instead of taking every word a little to factual just watch him do what he does, so far it has been extending his rubber powers to just about anything, he hasn't displayed any reality warping in that sense. So i wouldn't go to far with the toon force yada just yet. It's a perfect power to cut loose with the cartoonish style Oda has been waiting to draw.

He also has greater control of his own body to the point of exceeding mere rubber capabilities like his giant mode. He also seems to be immune to piercing damage as scene with his face melding to Kaido's club spikes. But yeah, i agree that it's kind of pointless to take every descriptive word literally.
@@calculator91 yeah his rubber powers got significantly stronger and extends to other people and the environment, but kaido states himself during the fight that he's still weak to slashing attacks and luffy also gets severely hurt by kaidos both Thunder bagua doom something and dragon twister which doesnt really strike me as omnipotence and more so goes in line with a power upp in his already existing attributes and an extension of them.
The only thing i wish Oda elaborated on was Law's interactions with Hawkins. their powers have such interesting effects on each other, perhaps i would've wracked Oda's brain to figure out how to make a satisfying battle between them which is why he off screened it. It wouls certainly make Hawkin's apparent removal in the story more palitable
the thing about the eyes and toon like eye pop thing. oda has done this a lot throughout the series. in scenes that have nothing to do with luffy too. remember ussop on dressrossa? he was actually the first time we saw this new eyes screwing out of the head look, it was used to make sugar pass out. he usually did not have the eyes swirl around like a cork screw untill this moment. i really think its more of just an art choice. i mean so many characters long before this with no contact to luffy had eye pop out scenes throught the show, enemies friends luffy himself. it really doesnt seem right if that is a consequence of his fruit. doesnt make sense to me. also not sure why people think this is a new toon form the show has been super toony from the get go. sure its a lil more at random it seems cause of the setting, but its not new for one piece or luffy.
I feel the same way about the eye pops and even when they're pissed their teeth turn all sharp n s#!+. One Piece has always been Zany, but the eye pops are different and consistent now...the same kind of eye pops associated with Gear 5th. Luffy even did it when. He saw his new bounty from Kid. So I'd say there's a difference and agree that Luffy is effecting his environment. He pulled the ground as a rubber shield, his fist was obviously sinking into Kaido's body more with his punches and the famous punch through the head. Kaido's body looked cartoony as Luffy rumbled inside of him.
So on one hand, I totally agree that Luffy has paramecium properties with his awakening, I also agree that the cartoony effects have always been present in this manga due to its own very nature of being a Zany Pirate Adventure.

it would be an interesting touch if luffy got overwhelmed with the nature of his df. It's like his body gets limitless freedom while he himself loses his own free will. Since his ultimate goal is to become the most free, it would make sense for the end of the story to feature him struggling with his own free will so that it would be more satisfying when he finally achieves this goal.
Regarding Hanuman, there is also the fascinating tale about him turning his body gigantic so that he can carry a hill while flying.
Maybe Oda will use this bit later on.

Edit: I'd like to point out that there IS a train of logic behind Gear 2, in that Luffy uses his rubber body to pump his blood faster, as seen when he smacks his legs to activate it, the steam comes as a result of the increased body heat from his increase blood flow. ...Or at least, that's the impression I always got out of it, still seems like a pretty out-there way of using a rubber body and not one that I or anyone else would think of.
Edit2: Hearing about backstories cut for time and space really breaks my heart. Oda has so many stories he wants to tell for these characters but there are just too many of them and only so many pages in a single chapter to tell them all. Oda's ambitious when it comes to his characters and their stories are both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness.
Original Comment: I'm glad Oda tried to set the record straight with Gear 5, though to be honest it still sounds extremely overpowered, which seems to be the case with most Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits. At the very least, he said that Luffy's Devil Fruit awakening at all is "a miracle", i.e. it was unlikely to happen up until it did. I think this is Oda trying to suggest that it's not like Luffy had these God-like powers and could have used them at any time in the past, thus undermining the tense and dramatic moments Luffy went through throughout his journey. I also like the idea of the potential risk of the "animal" within Luffy's Zoan Devil Fruit potentially overtaking him, could be a source of potential conflict, should he use Gear 5 again; like, Luffy is so focused on being goofy or laughing that he forgets what's really important to him or something along those lines.
I was already happy with the whole "Luffy becomes a literally Golden Age cartoons God" angle, but Oda giving these extra details and risks that come with it only make me more happy with this decision. Really looking forward to how these new powers get used in the final saga!

Hello just subscribed started getting into one piece a couple months ago used to be a big naruto fan but that ended and i dont care for how they handled it anymore. So now im jumping into this vast world and thanks to ur videos the lore has been easy to take in this is a fun sea.
I love the fact that Luffy has a child like imagination and trough out the whole series we where gradually watching his imagination and his devil fruit (joy boy aka. Nika) was affecting all of his gears and moves in the series. Wow honestly the best manga ever!
So, now we know Luffy's fruit imagination based. Obviously the practical side of his fire attacks is explained. But I think they came from his idolisation of Ace and prolly developed from luffy wanting to be more like him. Or even like an homage

Fun fact about gear second. The steam effect is actually realistic IRL. Although the requirements are different. Basically I got it many time when I used to do intense swimming training in an outdoor pool during winter. The intense body heat against the cold air created steam very similar to gear 2.

This does raise an interesting question... is the wacky nature of the One Piece World due to the actions of a previous Nika Nika fruit user? There are a lot of hybrid creatures, races like the long-arm tribes, places and rules of physics that are inconsistent, and even really random things that are just accepted. And since almost all of world history is lost or hidden...

I don’t think it’s just combat and haki. I suspect he has diplomatic power with origins from dragons or has crazy damning knowledge. I mean he just said, it’s time to claim the one piece. Claim. And just terrified an admiral with his haki. It’s making me see Marineford, his encounter with Kaido, five elders, Gorosei and Whitebeard very different. His power is high. I really hope Oda writes him and his crew in such a way that it lives up to all the set up.

No it ain't going to be that way , Oda won't cast the dragon ball effect in One Piece.It's definitely one of the most powerful fruit but still , Haki can counter it and it doesn't nessecarily eliminate other powerful fruit like Soru Soru , Magu Magu , Pika Pika , Yami Yami , Uo Uo Ryu Model , Hito Hito Daibutsu Model and more.
Well when you put it that way I believe monkey D Dragon has the ancient weapon Uranus in form of a devil fruit which puts him above Luffy we just need to wait for the creator of one piece to announce it

@4:40 I've always thought the way it was explained is he's overloading his metabolic function the steam you see is the moisture in his blood evaporating as he speeds up his heart rate to around 200bpm. That would make his reaction time strength speed, ect way faster.

Toon force rules! If you're a toon, you have infinite stamina, but if you're a human using toon force like Michael Jordon or Eddie Valiant or The Mask, you've got limited stamina. Toon force is not literally unbeatable however! If instead of fighting it, you lean into the gags and subvert them, you can defeat it! You simply have to be funnier than the toon you're facing against. Eddie Valiant managed this (plus a mild touch of toon force to survive his own self-harm) to kill the weasel gang by making them laugh to death.
