    How to Make a White Lady Cocktail
    Without looking too hard, you'll find a few different recipes going by the name "White Lady". Two, three or even four of them are all from the same bartender, Harry MacElhone, who created the drink in 1919. His original recipe called for Creme de Menthe, Cointreau, and Lemon Juice. In "ABC of Mixing Drinks" he lists it as Brandy, Creme de Menthe, and Cointreau, and then in 1923, when he took over the New York Bar in Paris, he updated the recipe again to be gin, Cointreau, and lemon juice, which is far more palatable. Many times these days, you will find this drink made with egg white as well.
    The recipe used here is as it was served by Harry Craddock at the Savoy cocktail bar in London.

    Recipe:
    1 1/2 ounces Martin Miller's Gin
    3/4 ounce Cointreau
    3/4 ounce lemon juice
    Instructions:
    Shake with ice.
    Strain into a cocktail glass.

    4:57 On the note of the name, the White Lady was actually named in honor of Eveline Alice Wander Gorkiewicz, who helped British prisoners of war escape Turkey during WWI. She dressed in all white to disguise herself as an old Turkish wash lady and had the POWs hide in her laundry cart; the POWs are also who named the drink after Gorkiewicz.

    Not true, john smith. As you can read in the description, the original recipe, created by Harry MacElhone, called for Creme de Menthe, Cointreau, and Lemon Juice. That's all.
    There have since been a number of variations created including one with egg white. This version is the recipe served by Harry Craddock at the Savoy cocktail bar in London.
    That all being said, egg white is a great addition to this cocktail.

    I tried this drink along with Robert's sidecar. My opinion there needs to be a touch of simple syrup to balance it out a little better. Both were just too tart for my taste

    Add lime juice rather than lemon juice and dash or bitters and it's a Pegu club. Interesting how close some of these drinks are.

    Nearly the same like the french 75 whih is sometimes said to be original with gin... i use eggwhite to make it even more white...

    If you emphasize the second part and call it the "white LADY", then it sounds elegant. But if you emphasize the first part, and call it the "WHITE lady", it sounds hilarious. I'm gonna stick with the second way
