    When I was a kid in the 1950's, my dad ran a wind tunnel on top of Mt. Washington in the winter for the Air Force to investigate icing on plane wings. He'd go up there for months at a time. I always wondered what it was like. And now I know! Thanks!

    What a storm! Amazing chapes in the snow :D
    Never want to be there outside...Really crazy people :0
    I really enjoyed this video because of its extreme weather conditions.
    But I got one question: what camera is able to film such a strong storm outside without getting damaged? :O

    I've been up there many times, the wind and weather is just as you've seen. Sometimes even worse. In January the wind chill can get to -80F up there, wind gusts well over 100mph, and death by exposure can happen if you aren't careful, and prepared for it. In mountaineering circles, the "Presidential Traverse", or traverse of all of the Presidential mountain peaks, in winter, is considered 'perfect training' for places like the Himalaya. K2 and Everest hopefuls often do multiple passes on the Presi-Traverse before even flying to the Himalaya.
    If you like this sort of challenge as I do, it's definitely a fun time in the White Mountains of NH up on the range in the winter :-)

    my uncle picked up a used winter L.L. Bean coat at the thrift shop for 10 bucks . good shape , still wears it in the winter . very technical coat , very lightweight . synthetic fill . down fill is useless when it gets wet , if its humid or when you perspire when your working or hiking .

    At 2:06.Is the light below Orion the sunrise,aurora,or light pollution from North Conway? Yeah ,neat video.I went there in early Oct 1992 not as icy that day.I remember watching a PBS kids science show called Voyage of the Mimi where Ben Afflec visited Mt Wash. in Nov 1983.I saw it back in 1986.Asked one of the staff if he remembered him visiting then and he said he did.Wonder if Ben took JLo up there on a return visit.I would love to go back there one day. Even during the winter .

    • @roastawk
      @roastawk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +motoprepper, there are winter trips to the Mount Washington Observatory at the summit. The observatory itself runs snowcat trips, and various mountain climbing schools offer climbs that include overnight stays. It is also possible to spend a week as a volunteer cook / cleaner. For details, visit www.mountwashington.org/.

      @l.v.i.bushcraftandsurvival6692 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably -18F as it's in the US. That is very mild as with the wind chill it can get to -70 to -80F quite often in January.

    • @bereruter0
      @bereruter0 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a lie lol ive been in 60-80mph gusts before maybe even more im real sceptical about the wind and its one of my greatest fears and one time I was walking to college and it litrely stopped me from walking and I didn't think it would be possible

    • @felicianomiko
      @felicianomiko 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      rocky toombstone
      I wondered as much as that seems a little low to me. I know as a kid I had trouble standing when wearing a full snowsuit in IL in the winter, but I have no idea how fast the wind was going, but with a steady 30mph wind most days and no trouble, 50 seemed too low.

    • @gregpphoto
      @gregpphoto 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      50-60mph is what it takes to be able to lean into the wind and have it fully support you. Most humans, myself included, tend to overestimate wind speeds. Its a really hard thing to gauge without instruments. But this being Mt. Washington, that guy was def. getting blasted by upwards of 70 and 80mph at the end there.

      Indeed it really is a pittance compared to the Rockies, Alps, Andes Himalaya etc. Yet this little rockpile has claimed the lives of over 100 people, many of them experienced alpine climbers because the weather is so deceptively severe.

      @donnadavidson4234 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4
