Dangerous USB phone chargers 7 (QC 3.0)

  • Yet another collection of 2 dodgy quick QC3.0 USB phone chargers from eBay, probably fake Qualcomm. Some questionable chargers may not comply with safety regulations and they may cause an electric shock or fire. Their current rating may be fake and they can damage your devices.

      I've seen lot of them and honestly they are not as dodgy as they could be, and some of chinesium type higher power psu are ok-ish. The biggest problem is low efficiency, no protection, rating from ass (sometimes 2x more than in reality), and use of low quality components (and fan, so it leads to explosion). Sometimes you can also see omitted filters, PFC choke made of cement in a plastic case (that's not a joke), radiators almost from aluminium foil... But safety-wise it's not that terrible from my experience.

      Fatally serie also. Lovely. My question is how to test it before damage it? Or every time when I can be safe in the bed i have to do damage 1 charger? I think DiodeGoneWild can make World Charger Security Service! Every producer will have to send him 3 pieces of chargers. One for disassembling, second for test with blitz in powerlines (3000-7000V), last one for 5 year test with full consumption. Also, they will have to pay for bills and fire extinguishers!
      In the books industry is normal to send 5-10 pieces to national/science libraries and charger industry need also regulations!!! Not only Right to Repair, but also Right to still alive and Right to see every dodgy and secure charger in these videos. Somethink like european car crash tests.

      I learnt that lesson the hard and expensive way. I used one of those cheap chargers to charge my phone and it ended up permanently damaging my touchscreen, it reported random touches by itself and gave erratic behaviour
      And hell, at the same time I used it to power my raspberry pi, after some months wifi, bluetooth and usb stopped working
      Now I only use OEM chargers, they're worth the extra couple of bucks

    There was a girl using a cheap charger while listening to music on her phone, and somehow the charger failed and the AC mains somehow came through the US connector into the phone, then through the earphones and killed her. That was a freak case, because for the AC power to be able to get that far and that long before burning anything out was quite crazy. What I suspect is that not both lines of the AC made it through, but just one made it through, and somehow the girl was grounded and thus she completed the circuit and died. Likely a cheap transformer allowed one of the AC lines through into the secondary coil, and then from there through the US connector, and into the phone it somehow found it's way to the audio jack, and then it was able to cross from the speaker head into her ear and into her brain, and out of her body from however she was grounded.
    Either way, even if that is a freak case, I would never suggest anyone actually use wired earphones while their charger is plugged in, no matter what brand the charger is.

    I really like teardown video series with those crappy chargers, I was a little bit shocked, how dodgy can be such charger especially transformer.
    I would also include in charger rating its output properties, while some el cheapo chargers can be safe and deliver advertised power permanently, they can have problems with ripple, voltage spikes on output that can affect touch screens (phantom touches, not registering touches), fingerprint readers and sensitive appliances. If you have time and tools for that, try adding this into your rating conclusion.
    Thanks for so far reviewed chargers and I am looking forward to new teardowns ;)

    I've seen a failure mode in switching power supplies where the secondary rectifier would get so hot that it would start conducting in reverse, which would then cause the primary-side overcurrent to trip. Once the diode cools off, the primary restarts and the device cycles like that. I suspect this may have been why the second charger was cycling even though it could initially supply more than its rated current.

  • @fabriziobrutti1205
    @fabriziobrutti1205 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Diode!!! Really appreciate your videos! What about making a non-dodgy USB charger video series? Some of them are really interesting... For example I have a 5V 2A Samsung USB charger which works very well... It outputs 2.4A at 4.8V (around 2.2 at 5.2V) and the ripple is also very low compared to the other ones. But the real gold about this charger is the fact that the no load voltage is 5.1V and as soon as you start loading it the voltage rises gradually to 5.4V at 2A, and this helps a lot to contrast the voltage drop caused from sh1tty USB cables and very used and old USB ports that don't make a good contact.
    Since I'm curious, I opened it and I've been positively surprised... In fact it has a little bit of interference filtering, a double 4.7uF 400V primary smoothing capacitor, then it has a physical cut in the pcb with a plastic barrier in order to separate the hot side and the low voltage side... Then it has a pretty big SMD output diode with a wide tinned are working as an heatsink... Then it has two 390uF 6.3V low ESR polymeric capacitors in a pretty small case. The transformer looks good and so the general quality.
    The model is ETA-U90EWE travel adapter. The markings are in both English and Russian, but there are some just in Russian... Eg. There's this marking дата производства: 30.07.2003, which I think it's the production day/month/year... You should make a video about it! 😃👍

    I love how the cheap circuit board has the UL recognized component marking (looks like ЯU) even though it's sketchy af. Just because the factory that supplies the circuit boards has good quality control (in theory necessary to get UL certification) doesn't mean the factory that assembles the power supplies or transformers isn't sketchy as fuck.

    In the second charger...do you suspect that most of the heat was from the diode on the output?
    What do better quality chargers do differently to fix this issue?

    • @stanimir4197
      @stanimir4197 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      2x shottky in parallel is very common, but real good ones have FETs as well w/ control logic to switch them similar to a diode. The heat was from the diode and the transformer, mostly, the capacitors likely have high(er) ESR which also contributes, the traces are likely not large enough to carry 3A, so some losses there as well. We don't know the original quality of the solder joint but that could be an issue as well.
      The overall quality appears to be of a complete noob doing the soldering part (it is manually soldered, note legs are not trimmer properly either), hopefully not forced labor...

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The higher quality chargers also use Schottky diodes with super-low forward voltage drop and over-rated (ie. 4 or 5A in a 3A charger).
      I was repairing something the other day that had some special diode with 0.12V drop at 4A, and the maximum current through it was only 2A.

    Nice video! Just an idea for another video you could do an autopsy of a proper charger transformer just for comparison

      Google Ken shirriff‘s usb charger teardowns. He did super detailed testing and reverse engineering of cheap and genuine chargers, and the difference is stunning.

    You should take on dodgy phone charger and try to make it work like it's in specification. Rewire transformers etc.

    Does it make any difference in QC2 vs. QC3 mode? 1:58 in your negotiating device.

    What is the module you are using to change voltage of qc3.0? Do you have link to it?

    Every time when i can be safe in the bed i have to damage charger? I think DiodeGoneWild can make World Charger Security Service! Every producer will have to send him 3 pieces of chargers. One for disassembling, second for testing with blitz in powerlines (3000-7000V), last one for 1-5 year test with full consumption. Also, they will have to pay for bill and fire extinguishersss (Žatec Beerss)
    In the books industry is normal to send 5-10 pieces of books to national/science libraries and charger industry need also regulations!!! Not only Right to Repair, but also Right to still alive!

      11:56 You need non contact thermometer from Lidl for 10-15€, or from China for 6-8€, or only module for arduino with logging to SD card or via USB to PC and into video picture. Price for everything in the next link is around 10€ create.arduino.cc/projecthub/akshayjoseph666/covid-19-non-contact-thermometer-ad448a

    Is there a charger that you can use at maximum rating without having to stand by with a fire extinguisher? I'm getting the feeling that the majority of chargers out there are DODGY.
    BTW I love Dodge Charger SRTs !

      All name brand ones are fine - it you buy a phone (say Samsung) the charger it comes with would be decent as well.
