My FRG-7 is going well. I’ve cleaned pots and replaced the dial lamps with warm white LEDs after they started to fail. I did link the MW and SW aerial posts so the SO-239 works on both. Finally a cap between mute and earth to slow the AGC for SSB. I often listen to Radio New Zealand in the evenings and sometimes 40m. Nice set

Been pissing it down here in bedworth warwickshire, the grass likes it at least :-D
Not a bad old beast, it might need a bit of love , it sounds ok to me :-)
The vaccume out made a hell of a difference, a duvet of fluffy dust .
I find 0-30 mhz receivers handy for listerning to local oscillators and i.f strips in radios.
I have a old yaesu frg 7700, my mates frg 7 works well too :-D
Just wag the antenna cable near the local oscillator, no direct contact.

zx8401ztv I thought the 9R sounded very good. But I think he as a better antenna and less noise where he is.

@@allthegearnoidea6752 Yes it does sound good, as you know my ears are buggered and tinnitus is there most of the time, so it's hard to make absolute judgements.
When he backs away the camera, i often have problems hearing him as he has a soft voice as well.
I'm not moaning about it, well maybe i am ha ha :-D
I have never had problems understanding you chris, so get mumbling to torture me ha ha :-D

@@IrishvintageTVRadio Ha ha :-D , i do mis hear words that my frends say as well, they have a habit of saying something while being turned away from me, just sounds like a mumble to me, and the things i think i hear is just funny as hell lol.
Chicken pox or measles at the age of 30 (Don't remember which one), that ruined my lug holes and gave me my own set of tuning forks in my head.
      Oh joy ha ha :-D.

Everyone owns a 9R. I was just about to say you need to do Volmet and you went and did it. Looks like it’s working very well. They drift terribly that’s just normal. As you say the top range is deaf on these again that’s normal. I’m not sure the wax problem is true. I found it was the mica caps failing and heat appears to fix it temporarily. The BFO knob belongs On the antenna tune control. The wax will run off with a heat gun. Thanks regards chris

It think it the wax absorbs moisture in much the same way as the old wax caps, reducing the Q at higher frequencies. A very knowledgeable gentleman on the UKVRRR said He noticed a considerable increase in gain on the higher bands after removing the wax. I know wax has been known to cause a similar reduction in RF gain in certain VHF rigs. I might try removing it with lighter fluid.

You've got to love that battered old speaker! About 45 years ago I bought a Realistic DX-160 with a similar looking speaker. In the blurb sheet that accompanied the radio, they did their level best to play it up, describing it as a "Voice selective outboard communications speaker" - I'd describe it as "A cheap and tinny little speaker in a dreadful tin box". It was just about up to old school landline telephone quality - about 250Hz to 750Hz audio frequency range! To be honest, the audio output from the radio wasn't a great deal better, even when coupled with a decent speaker.
I'm going to have to get back into a bit of SWL I think, and maybe even get an X-Ceiver and get myself on air. Do you get many lady radio hams across the water?

Put a bit of Surface Shield spray into the AF-Gain- and the S-meter-potentiometer and the scratching noise will disappear.
The same repeat for all other switch- contacts in case of scratching sound while receiving.

Hi. To connect an external antenna you must solder the output of the A wire of the antenna to the internal pole of a connector such as the PL259, and the (E)earth wire of the wire must be connected to the body of the PL 259 connector, right?
