- Sarah Margaret Ferguson (October 15, 1959), also known by the nickname “Fergie”, is a British author, television personality, and a member of the British royal family. She is the former wife of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the third child and second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and brother of King Charles III.
She is the second daughter of Major Ronald Ferguson and Susan Barrantes. After Sarah's parents divorced in 1974, her mother married polo player Héctor Barrantes and moved to Argentina. She stayed with her father and stepmother Susan Deptford.
Sarah once described her family as "country gentry with a bit of old money". She is a descendant of King Charles II of England via three of his illegitimate children, and has aristocratic ancestry.
Princess Diana was friends with Sarah. Their mothers were best friends at school and the contact between the girls led to a lasting friendship between the pair of daughters.
Their friendship only grew stronger in late adolescence when Diana moved to London. In 1985, Diana arranged the meeting between her friend and her brother-in-law Prince Andrew. Sarah and Andrew were engaged the following year.
On July 23, 1986, Sarah married Prince Andrew, who she had known since childhood, and they had met occasionally at polo matches and became reacquainted with each other at Royal Ascot in 1985. With her fun spirit and friendly approach, she was considered to be a good addition to the royal family.
Sarah automatically assumed her husband's royal and ducal status and became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York. As Duchess of York, she joined her husband in carrying out royal engagements, including official overseas visits.
The couple became parents on August 8, 1988, with the birth of their first daughter, Princess Beatrice. Less than two years later, in 1990, they added another daughter to their family, Princess Eugenie.
Diana, Princess of Wales and Sarah, Duchess of York enjoyed very much being sisters-in-law and raising their children together. The Wales boys have always remained close to the York girls.
After Diana’s death, Sarah would say that the 'tinkling laughter' is what she misses most about Diana, and that the princess was her best friend and the funniest person she knew, although at the end, they hadn't spoken for a year.
By 1991, the marriage was in trouble, as Sarah was finding life as a member of the royal family increasingly difficult. The Duke and Duchess of York announced their "amicable" separation on March 19, 1992. Following the separation, the palace announced that Sarah would no longer carry out public engagements on behalf of the Queen. Prince Andrew and Sarah got divorced four years later.
Since her divorce, Sarah has attended some functions with her daughters, such as the investitures of the Duke of York into the Royal Victorian Order and the Order of the Garter, and Royal Ascot, and on those occasions, she is afforded the courtesy of treatment as a member of the royal family, but she was not invited to the 1999 wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones nor the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, although she attended the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.
Both during and after her marriage, Sarah has been involved with several charities as a patron and spokesperson. Her charity work primarily revolves around helping cancer patients and children. She has been the patron of Teenage Cancer Trust since 1990 and founded Children in Crisis and Sarah's Trust. In the years after her divorce, Sarah was the subject of scandals that affected her relationship with the royal family, but she has appeared in various royal events in recent years. She has authored several books for children and adults and has worked as a TV personality and film producer.
Sarah referred the relationship with Prince Andrew as ‘the happiest divorced couple we know', with the pair appearing to spend more time together than during the ten years they were actually married (when Andrew was often away on naval service).
They still share a home, living at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, the ten-bedroom former residence of the Queen Mother, although this cosy arrangement may soon come to an end as part of King Charles's projected reshuffle of royal residences.
They regularly holiday together with their daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, leading to sporadic speculation that given neither Sarah nor Andrew has found subsequent great romance, there is always the possibility they may one day remarry.
Altough Sarah was estranged from the royals, they seem to be on better terms in recent years.
Her invitation to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding back in 2018 may have been a sign that she's at least partially back in the royal fold.
Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, she was seen mourning her late former mother-in-law alongside the rest of the royal family, and it was later confirmed that she and Prince Andrew inherited the Queen's corgis. - บันเทิง
