I spent Christmas in Colombia with my husband and his family who are from different parts of Colombia. We spent a few days in Cartagena and got to see the house where Gabriel Garcia Marquez lived and thought of you! Cartagena was so beautiful!

Why would I skip over the cat and dog chaos? Those are some of the best parts! Also, cats man: you get them presents and they play with the trash :D

The best part of snow to me is seeing all that "glitter" in it! I love that you were able to capture that on video. I think people who don't experience snow don't realize that it may be cold and brutal, but it's also filled with magical fairy dust! This made me regret not investing in some snow gear this year. I had wanted to but prices in stores put me off and I didn't think to look online! I saw one jacket that was $1300 🤯 Like you, I just want to be warm enough to have fun with the dog, 60 dollars would've been great! Lol

Hi Emma, So sorry you've been so ill. This has been one of my favorite vlogs you've done. I loved the outdoor,snowy,icy adventures with your brother. We've had NO snow so far this Winter...which makes me very unhappy.I can't believe a Winter without snow ! All year I look forward to the Winter, the gentle, peaceful silence of a first snowfall...hasn't happened yet. I love watching Christmas celebrations. Your parents Christmas tree was so colorful. I can understand you missing Nature living in a big city. Our town has slowly converted to a city,and I need to get back to a quieter living space. We used to have lots of snow starting December here in Romania but things have changed drastically in the last years and I miss it so much!! 😢😢 We also used to have around -20 degrees in the winters and now we have +15 during the day and no snow as you can imagine. When I was a kid, there was no Christmas or winter without snow, but we haven’t got snow for Christmas in years now (6 at least) which is very sad and scary. The impact we have on Earth is unbelieveable…
I visited Romania in 2009, and it was the coldest weather I had ever been in. It was -15c with lots of snow. Yes, the impact humans have had on earth is appalling.

YES!! Isak Dinesen wrote Out of Africa, which was made into a film starring Meryl Streep. Such a beautiful book. Highly recommend!!

Btw, I was sick all throughout Christmas with a bad case of the flu (thankfully not Covid) until past New Year's, so I feel your pain when it comes to having been sick the past few weeks

I read "Out of Africa" by Dinesen in the early '90s. When you mentioned the short stories I went immediately and checked out a digital copy. In my reading journal I've started keeping a list of the books you recommended. 😊
Yes, bouldering! Apparently, i did indoor climbing, not bouldering, last week, but I will try bouldering as well, probably tomorrow or the day after. This vlog made me happy. Thanks for sharing. Hope everyone has a great new year.

this video made me feel so nostalgic for some reason and it made me think how weird and beautiful it is that there are places where it can be such a normal thing to have so much snow but the part where you are jumping in the snow and playing around in it I can only picture the same thing but with sand instead of snow cause that's more what i'm used to so idk it just made me think about that! anyway happy new year emma i hope it's a good one!

I've recently moved to Seattle from Melbourne, Australia. I totally feel you about the lack of nature. I didn't think it would affect me as much as it has and it sucks. I miss my local parks and being surrounded by trees and grass and bushes and flowers. I'm only here for a few months so I get to go home in March which I didn't think I would look forward to as much as I am.

Re Karen Blixen, you probably already know the film Out of Africa (Meryl Streep, Robert Redford et al), was based on one of her books.

P.S. If you're picking up a lot of bugs maybe do some reading on gut biome. It's a fascinating topic particularly as most of our immune system is in our gut. Tim Spector (no affiliation), has done a lot of research in this area. There are loads of informative videos on YT. X

A lovely vlog right before my semester starts up 🥰 very happy
I helped my Dad pick up an elliptical he bought for my Mom two days before Christmas, and we had to disassemble it with the people he bought it from in the garage of their apartment building so that it would fit in the car - Jesus Christ it was so cold my hands nearly dropped off. 🥶 That is to say yes, Christmas was absolutely way too cold here this year. Nice that it's a bit warmer now ("a bit warmer" here meaning -3C instead of -15 and windy), although I expect it's bound to get cold again sooner or later .
Also I honestly can't say I'm enjoying A Farewell to Arms as much as I was expecting to (I actually haven't read Hemingway before), but hopefully by the end I'll have gotten a little more into the rhythm of the thing, who knows.

Oh how i love the vlogs. Thank you for this! I ended up finishing Farewell to Arms much faster than anticipated. With school starting again, I saw the opportunity to get ahea of my reading schedule , apparently going overboard. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it
Same here. I finished it today. I actually didn't like his writing style, and how women spoke like programmed sexbots telling the men what they wanted to hear. It really was a "men writing women badly" situation. Also I felt that if Hemingway said "and" one more time I was going to scream.
I've never heard a more real sibling interaction that when your brother was spouting fashion brands and you pan the camera off him and mutter 'okay'. I could hear the eyeroll 🤣
I read the Ruby Red trilogy like 10 years ago and I absolutely loved it! I hope you enjoy them! The spanish editions are prettier😮💨❤️

I've read Blixen's Babette's Feast. It was beautiful, highly recommend.
I've also marked 120 on Goodreads, it's a decent number and I won't have to fret I won't make it.
I've read the Ruby Read trilogy when I was 14/15, something like that, and I was obsessed. It was my whole personality back then. And I don't remember anything from the books, just how they made me feel. Now I want to reread them just for the nostalgia.
here's what i'm currently reading!
1 - A Farewell to Arms - the first couple chapters were a slog for me lol (this is my first Hemingway) but once we got into it, I've been loving it! the dialogue is cracking me up.
2 - War and Peace - I've kind of mixed a Game of Tomes + Ben McAvoy's 2023 book club and this is one of his picks. I'm listening to the audiobook until I get a physical copy, but been really enjoying it so far! not what I was expecting at all, so pleasantly surprised.
3 - A Storm of Swords - ASOIAF has just become the constant that I can always fall back on. really loving the experience :)
4 - The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories - these have been a spicy addition to my day and they are AWESOME. probably my favorite so far is "Turned".
i used to be so intimidated by reading multiple books at once but i've slowly acclimated and love having something to pick up for whatever mood i'm in. also took Ben's tip to leaving specific books in specific spots around my house and i love how they each pick up a special association / mood. :)

Can’t believe you found Isak Dineson 😊! Have you ever watched Out of Africa? It will touch you in your core. It’s a dramatisation of her time in Africa and I love it so much that I started reading many of her writings on her life there and when I went to Africa I visited her actual house. They even named a town after her. I’m sure you would love it.

It is such a coincidence that I just discovered Isak Dinesen too :) I have yet to read the Seven Gothic Tales but I can highly recommend that Winter Tales you mentioned, plus two others called Last Tales and then Babette's Feast and Other Stories. She also wrote a pretty famous non-fiction book called Out of Africa that I was recommended. Happy reading!

hope you start feeling better Emma!! after your top books of 2022 I wanted to recommend a woman in the polar night by Christian Ritter! a mesmerizing memoir about a woman relationship with ice and the nature that encompasses it, highly recommend
I immediately added Seven Gothic Tales to my tbr. It sounds lush. I just finished The Bloody Chamber yesterday and gave it 5 stars. The writing was so decadent! I’m loving A Farewell to Arms but I fear for Hemingway’s liver so early in his young life. So much vermouth 😂
If you want to read more time travel books I can highly recommend Connie Willis starting with Doomsday Book. It's a series but very loosely linked so they can be read as stand-alones.

Love to see you reading Ruby Redby Kerstin Gier! It was one of the German ya fantasy staples EVERYONE (even the non-readers) read at like age 12. There are also the German movies which are hot trash but fun to watch (at least the first one, they progressively get worse and worse). On another note: Kerstin Gier in general is well known in Germany and participated in a bunch of book and movie events so I’ve actually met her multiple times
I get kidney stones, so I definitely understand what you mean about pain that makes you sick to your stomach. I am sorry that you had to go through that, and I hope you are feeling better now.

Sorry about the migraine. I also struggle with migraines and get sick from them. Ice packs, peppermint oil, and alternating between Tylenol and ibprofeun every four hours really help me. And keeping a regular sleep schedule really has reduced my headaches over the years.
