I think calling your parents mom and dad is a respect thing but also something you do out of affection and love. Your parents are not just people they are your parents that is why they have special names just for you and your siblings

In some cases it's good for young children to call their parents by their first names. For instance, if my wife and I are at the mall with our 5 year old daughter and she gets separated from us; if the police ask her what her parents' names are, she won't tell them "mommy and daddy". We try to get her used to hearing our names. So instead of telling our daughter to do something like "Go ask mommy..." or "Go tell daddy...", we use our names.

I know it's so confusing for you white folks, but for people with a social culture, kids always call parents dad and mum, baba/Aba or mami. That doesn't always mean they don't know their parents' names. Kids in Africa, Asia, and Middle East, do not ever call parents by their names, even when they are fully grown adults, and even with families of their own, with fully grown kids themselves.

I knows there’s TECHNICALLY nothing wrong with calling your parents by their name and that it’s all culture. But this video warms my heart for some reason! I would never call my parents by their first name unless they specifically asked me to (I would get “the look”, too, if I did 😬). There’s just something about holding for your parents a level of respect that separates them from being your friend. They are parents. I like that we are so “afraid” to call them by their first name. How can something so simple be that much of a big deal 😅 love it.
Also, I don’t mean to say those of you who call your parents by their first name don’t respect them; I’m sure you have an “equivalent” expression somewhere in your family culture that takes the place of this.

Saying a name isn’t disrespectful. YOU just aren’t used to it so you think its weird. I called my mom by her name before TikTok was even a thing. Its not that uncommon and she doesn’t see it as disrespectful we are just used to it. Old people have no respect now a days y’all just judge judge judge!!🙄

whats with americans and their first names XD i call my own parents mom and dad ofc but they wouldnt have cared if i just said their name haha. Same with the calling your teacher by their first name videos. we call our teachers by their first name here in Norway, but if you tried that on an American teacher they are like who the fuck do you think you are calling me by my first name ? hahah

Don't know that it's just Americans. Can't imagine doing that in India, Japan, Africa, Brasil.... Can't image that in the Caribbean. In the US South you still say "Miss" Mary (or whatever name). In Hawai'i you say "Auntie" Alanis. The respect must be there.
