I think calling your parents mom and dad is a respect thing but also something you do out of affection and love. Your parents are not just people they are your parents that is why they have special names just for you and your siblings

That doesn't always mean they don't know their parents' names. Kids in Africa, Asia, and Middle East, do not ever call parents by their names, even when they are fully grown adults, and even with families of their own, with fully grown kids themselves.

I would never call my parents by their first name unless they specifically asked me to (I would get “the look”, too, if I did 😬). There’s just something about holding for your parents a level of respect that separates them from being your friend. They are parents. I like that we are so “afraid” to call them by their first name. How can something so simple be that much of a big deal 😅 love it. Also, I don’t mean to say those of you who call your parents by their first name don’t respect them; I’m sure you have an “equivalent” expression somewhere in your family culture that takes the place of this.
