I am soooooo glad The Jones Girls are receiving their well deserved flowers!!!! I LOVE The Jones Girls. The one thing that comes to mind immediately whenever I think of them and their incredible music is...... HARMONIES!!!! They have some of the tighest harmonies! 🔥🔥🔥❤
Saying it again. At 64 years of age, I've lived a life moved by music. From listening to Soul, Rock, Motown, Jazz, and Blue Eyed Soul influences in my 60s childhood... ...to enjoying/exploring Funk, Disco, Progressive Rock, and Fusion Jazz during my teens in the 70s (dancing/DJing)... ...hearing instrumental and recording technology change focus from analog to digital in New Wave, Proto-House, Electro-Funk, Rap and Techno as a DJ during late 70s to late 80s... ...and listening/dancing in that place in the 1990s and 2000s (where things musical had been revived and syncretized) as I taught Ballroom and Latin dance... ...no TH-cam channel is enlightening, surprising and inspiring me more than this... ...the Black Music Archives. Best course/schooling I've come across. I seriously and respectfully appreciate and... THANK YOU! 🎵👍🏾🙏🏾❤🔥👊🏾🎶
I always found the back story of "Nights Over Egypt" fascinating; the conception by producer Dexter Wansel, wanting to travel to Egypt for inspiration but couldn't due to Pres. Anwar Sadat's assassination, sending songwriter Cynthia Biggs to the library for research, etc. I stumble across this video and the breakdown of harmony, unison, chords and the tension and release in the chorus blew me away! This song is a musical masterpiece indeed and I'm glad the credit goes to Valorie Jones for that special something. RIP Val and Brenda and continued blessings for Shirley 🙏🏾🌹🏝️
This was a great interview and thank you for having Shirley Jones of "The Jones Girls" on your show. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in the early 80's and was blown away by their perfect angelic harmonies. I really didn't want them to stop singing. The only thing I regret is that Valerie and Brenda are no longer with us. I wish they could be here to witness all the accolades they've been getting the past few years.
They are compared to the Emotions but for me they have they're on sound. The Jones Girls harmonies are unmatched. The Emotions are great too and they come very close but those Jones sisters were beast vocally. They're catalog is awesome.❤
“Children of the night” I love that song and others. I love their backing vocals on Aretha Franklin “Almighty Fire”. The Jones Girls had some beautiful voices, they were beautiful wome and had Iovely hair it was so thick. I also love Shirley song “Do you get a enough love” its so soothing, I listened to it to mello out at night, and I loved their Unsung on tv one. I remember being in choruses in middle school and show choir in high school practicing singing the scales. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Let’s not forget another one of their gold records “A dance turned into a romance”. That intro reminds me of a nostalgic sound of the 1940’s female harmony or something. ❤️
OMFG YOU DID AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LEAD SINGER OF THE JONES GIRLS!?!?!?!? Thank you so much for showing so much to Detroit 😭😭😭😂😂. I love you so much. Who Can I Run To is my favorite song by them. Then Knockin is my 2nd favorite
"That background gotta be slick!" Now she is saying more than just a word. The background is the wind beneath the wings, backyard BBQ, sunsetting strolls on the beach, steaming up the windows in the backseat, holding hands for the first time, and shouting on the dancefloor. Done right, Jones Girls style, it will send you, soothe you, tease you, tempt you, heal you, and hurt you (in a good way) all over.
Oh yes. I LOVE THIS. What better way to understand the art and practice of singing, then to get it from folks who have a history of singing. The history we get. The culture we get. The perspectives we get. I love it all.
I think because the emotions sounded so similar it stunted them. I love the Jones girl's. My mom use to play the full albums almost every Friday night before bed
Another great video. I hope you can turn this into a harmony series where you delve into harmonies by Black groups like the Clark Sisters, EnVogue, Take 6, Boyz II Men, Brownstone, Silk, Xscape, Dru Hill, etc. Also, wish you could delve into harmonies by solo artists who really spend time on them like Michael & Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Brian McKnight, Brandy, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, etc.
I falled in love for Think Twice (Céline Dion) because the superb background singers (not in album version but in live version since 1997). The line that they sing "This is seriiiooous" is amazing!
Another great video and interview!! Thank you for your in-depth knowledge and understanding on musical theory! And Thank you Shirley Jones & The Jones Girls for your musical contribution!
We definitely get enough joy from you two too! Hearing Shirley's musical journey and your interest for the passion of music and singing is so engaging and especially on this topic of girl group harmonies. So many girl groups from different generation to appreciate. My personal favorites are The Pointer Sisters vibrant and textured harmonies, Perri sisters 'No Place To Go' spiritual and soothing harmonies along with SWV's youthful harmonies.
I have been watching your videos very seriously and learning things from a long time. This video has really set a new standard towards music education. Thank you for being so sincerely dedicated to your work from so many years. You deserve all the collaborations and acclaim possible because you are truly sincere to music as art. Sending all my good vibes!
Awesome job breaking down vocal harmonics in singing and chords. Intervalic singing. You're so knowledgeable. I've loved this song and the Jones Girls! They are so skilled!!
Just discovered your channel today, 18th April 2023- terrific content. You are doing an important job in researching and interviewing a wide range of artist, allowing them the opportunity to share their story and expertise.
This is great work, teaching, and sharing of knowledge that you’re doing. I had the opportunity to interview the Jones Girls when I was a DJ for a college radio station in the late ‘70’s -KSJS, San Jose, StateUniversity. Thank you 🙏🏾 🎤🎵🎼🎶🎸🥁

Thanks for making this video Malik. I never knew who the Jones Girls was until i watched this video> I really appreciate every video you upload. Happy New Year Malik
This is more than helpful I’ve been doing my best to study the older music I love ,but learning how they decide to organize harmonies drives me crazy haha to hear it directly from the singer is so informative and inspiring thanks for the post!
Okay. This was so good. So does this mean SWV uses tight harmonies? Do you happen to know, if any, do they have any songs with open harmonies? Also i have to look this Jones Girls group up. She's so beautiful and knowledgeable Thanks Ms Brown and Milik.
This explains why there are no music groups out today. It's 2023 and I can't think of any black music groups. The current crop of singers just lack the talent and skill to be in a group. At least, this is my take on the reason.
Because The Three Degrees had left philly, Gamble and Huff were looking for a female group to fill their lack of females on their rosta, without The Three Degrees leaving PIR there would be no Jones Girls.

The good outcome of social media. I am sure people in the music biz would not have made the effort to create those educational gems.
Nope it’s based off exploitation.
This video shows why I love this channel so much. This is like getting a free music education!
The most underrated female group of all time
Shirley's voice is still GORGEOUS! I heard her for the first time in a longggggg time on Pass the Mic with DJ Cassidy, and I was floored‼️

This is a TRULY EXCELLENT video breaking down the JONES GIRLS’ harmonic gifts.“Nights Over Egypt” is a masterpiece!!!

Beautiful voices and beautiful faces 😍😍😍 three of these for the Jones Girls and one more for the mother they came out of 😍

What a wonderful positive interview
What a blessing to have Madam Shirley Jones still with us spreading love.
This was amazing! I'd love an interview/video with one of The Emotions (Wanda or Sheila)

I think SWV sings tight harmonies, since the notes in their backgrounds tend to be closer to each other on the scale.
These ladies do have beautiful vocals .
I absolutely loved this episode! Bravo 👏🏾👏🏾
Absolutely WONDERFUL!
I saw the Jones Girls at Circles Star Theater at Industrial Blvd San Carlos, California
oh my goodness, I love themmmmmm
Broke down that illusive music theory to the point where even *_I_* got it (at long last)..! 😂
Excellent explanation… 🙏

Now do one with the emotions
💥💥💥
The Jones Girls story the Movie 😊 where is it 😢

Agreed. I've been telling people the exact same thing for the past 20-plus years
Because The Three Degrees had left philly, Gamble and Huff were looking for a female group to fill their lack of females on their rosta, without The Three Degrees leaving PIR there would be no Jones Girls.
Epic 🤎 thank you for this 🙏🏽
