I just picked up a bottle of this. I have a different cask but it sounds very similar. It is my first Edradour and my first Signatory. I went into this with no knowledge and I likened it to a punch in the face. Totally unexpected. I had to go look for reviews to see if I was the only one knocked on my heels by the nose and flavor profile. I like your description of bat-shit crazy. Ralfy called this bottling bonkers and this is indeed a bonkers whisky. Ralfy also suggested more water and the addition of water definitely began to tame this cantankerous beast. I cannot fathom what the cask strength version of this must be like or how they even keep it in the bottle! 😆 This whisky should be part of any enthusiasts journey. When they talk about the flavor chase, this is one of those milestones you never forget. I look forward to how it evolves with time. A daily sipper this is not but if you're looking for a bold, complex, bat-shit crazy dram, this is where to go.

Excellent review Jim - and thanks to your generosity I was able to drink a sample along with you. You nailed it completely - it just keeps on giving, there's so much going on. Wonderful whisky - and here's to your continued good health! Sláinte.

I enjoyed this review Jim and have to admit that I had somewhat written off Edradour after buying a bottle of their Bellechin much too early in my journey for that much ash taste. This sounds very interesting and that color is somewhat unique as well! Seems to have some similarities to my bottle of GlenDronach 21 that has a few similar flavors including that vinegar (which I am not crazy about). At this point in my journey whiskies that are complex or unique are appreciated and often make me reach for them before others. Cheers!

Cheers Drew. This is definately an interesting and noteworthy whisky. Absolutely would agree that it's not one for beginners but certainly worth checking out a little further down the road.

Haven't ventured into Edradour just because it seems enigmatic based on respected reviews and feedback. This is an example of the breadth of the spectrum of Scotch single malt. After this review I have to try a bottle of this and find out if I love or hate it. Thanks, Jim.

    • @WhiskeyNovice

I'd certainly recommend giving it a go Bud. It's different, it's odd but, once settled, it's got a draw to it. I can't see this bottle hanging around long and it will definately be replaced.
      Cheers my friend.

Hi Jim, I have to say I don't have good memories of the official bottling (including a babysick vomit note on the nose!), but I haven't tried that S.V. (btw, it is not "Signatory" as many say familiarly, but 'Signatory Vintage" , as it is not "Rare Malts", but "Rare Malts Selection" sorry to be too geeky there lol) . Some early ones were stunning, like I said in someone else's channel chat recently, try for instance to find (auction only, I'm afraid) the Edradour 21 yo Porto finish bottled at 53 % in 2004 (I tried it at WLP 2004) it is stunning & I rated it 94/100...Not sure they make such good stuff now...just saying...Having said that, some people with good taste say there are some greatly sherried affordable versions today, just have to know which one & when...Cheers my friend !

Draming along with cask 118. I must confess I'm a fanboy of Edradour. This is my favourite dram when it comes to sherry style whisky. I've already gone trough a bottle of cask 395 and I will keep on buying (and drinking) these bottlings as they reach my market. Truly amazing stuff. I'm with you on the official 10yo as being a bit thin on the palate - if you're going for official Edradour, go with the 12yo Caledonia would be my suggestion. That one is a beauty. Cheers mate!

    Great review (again), Jim.
Have had the official 10yo and the "if you like that, then try this" section -to put it the other way around- definately puts this one on the bucket list. Thanks Jim for recommending this ... boohoo .... and that list already is way too long.

Again to my shame I have not had Edradour of any kind yet. I know, I hear so many good things, but in my area, it's twice the price of anything else. So ... hard to bring home my friend. Thanks for your thoughts on this independent. Cheers!

Hi Jim. I like and agree with your description of the whisky as an enigma and especially likening it to Captain Beefheart; so weird, but you keep getting drawn back to it. I have a bottle from a different cask (127), but everything that you said about your bottle rings true to mine. My problem is that it's currently unobtanium here in Alberta. I'll need to make an import from the UK list, and add Signatory Edradour 10 once mine is gone.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Cheers Peter. It's a bottle that I will always have in my cabinet now because I'm convinced I'll never tire of finding new things in it.
Thankfully it's not TOO hard to get hold of here (if you know where to look 😉).

Hi Jim, I've commented on a few of your videos as I make my way through your catalogue. Loving them, dude. 👍
One thing I would say is that I listen to your YT videos in my car as I drive around so I miss a lot of your visual cues.
So when you start talking about "this" as per the 14 min 30s mark onwards here, I'm not always clear on what "this" is.
So, could you see your way clear for the benefit of us poor souls who are listening to you on the wireless and just clarify the odd time what the "this" is that you are referring to?
Just a bit of feedback from a fan!

Apologies mate. I have thought about that and caught myself on pointing or nodding in the direction of things thinking "if people are just listening to this...it doean't make great radio" 🙄. I am trying to fix that buddy but, sometimes one or two will slip through the net.
      Thanks for the support.

I have a bottle of this waiting for me to come around to open it. Haven't tried the official 10 yo but from what I've read about it I don't think comparing it with the Signatory expression is too fair. Maybe the closest "core range" bottling from Edradour is the 12 yo Caledonia. I suspect that Caledonia is even better😀 Not that Signatory UCF 10 yo is bad but the Caledonia is such a monster of a dram.
