Election is an underrated movie. I have turned so many people on to that brilliant black comedy. I own Moonstruck as well. And agree with him about Parker Posey. I am hoping we'll get a Party Girl criterion selection soon.
So charming, and funny! Love Daniel's personal anecdotes as he presents each film he's selected. I enjoyed like heck his movie "Good Grief." It's beautiful and heartfelt. Thanks to Mr. Levy and Criterion for this video.
Dan levy's picks is the MOST real and down to earth picks I've seen on this channel. No pretentiousness or faux intellectualism, just confessions of formerly being a faux intellectual movie store clerk and infectious smirk and laugh.
Damn I’m really vibing with Dan’s Picks here. A great mix of indie darlings, art picks, and foreign films. Loved his show “Schitt’s Creek” and can’t wait to see some of this film influence carry into his movie “Good Grief”.
I had a very similar experience with a film class in which our screenings were at 9am on a Monday, resulting in a very sleepy viewing of The Spirit of the Beehive. Our screening of Martyrs, however, was difficult to sleep through
I was so thrilled when The Daytrippers finally got a proper DVD release a few years ago, that entire cast is wonderful (yes, I have always been a massive fan of Parker Posey as well, but the late great Anne Meara gives such a towering performance of both comedy and drama in that too).
I actually watched 'Weekend' just the other day and Dan is right. It is in its own small way a remarkable film. The director Andrew Haigh's new film 'All of us strangers' has just come out and I'm now very excited to see it.
His film 45 Years is also amazing. It’s centred around an old, long term married heterosexual couple, so in some ways the opposite to the two gay men of Weekend who have only just met, but both done incredibly sensitively. Nothing over the top and very real and believable characters. Haigh is a very talented director!
Just saw All of us Strangers. A beautiful and moving film, with Andrew Scott incredible in the lead role. Bring tissues. Made me cry more than any film in a long time!
Reese Witherspoon had already assembled quite an eclectic filmography by the time she starred in Election (1999). One of my personal favorites is Freeway (1996).
Thank you for talking about Andrew Haigh's brilliant "Weekend". In fact all of Haigh's movies are worthwhile, something I couldn't say about many other directors. Currently he's getting much-deserved attention for "All of Us Strangers". See that too.
I'm curious as to if you've seen "Beautiful Thing"? There's a strong case to be made that "Weekend" is the adult sequel to it. There's so many nods and winks but it's a delightful film in and of itself.
Goddamn I love Moonstruck. And that's a recent love because I've only ever seen bits of it over the years. And goddamn, if a film ever has "feel" - from the music, to the lighting, to the way it's shot, to the folley, to the performances - it's Moonstruck. Just outstanding.
I wrote down the ones on Dan Levy's closet list that I've not seen because I fully appreciated that first pick, which is one of my favorites. Yes, I surprise friends when I admonish them for not seeing Moonstruck or Pretty Woman, but both have dialogue I enjoy immensely. My own recommendation? GODZILLA MINUS ONE, the first Godzilla film I ever watched. Thankfully I was gifted a full year of Criterion Channel on my birthday last month -- BEST GIFT EVER!!! -- so I took the time to see the original Godzilla and then returned to the local AMC to watch Minus One again. Verdict? Even better the second time, and the non-Godzilla-fan with me was impressed -- and he cried 3x, too, on the same parts that got me during both viewings. THANK YOU, CRITERION, both for these marvelous moments in the closet and your channel, which I now recommend to everyone. PS: Please roll out a referral program so we can spread the word and both parties are incentivized...hmm, not sure that's a real word, but you get the idea. A free month for them, a free set of 4x6 postcards for us -- DVD covers from your collection -- which can be sent in a basic envelope via USPS for the cost of a first-class stamp. Just throwing out ideas, hope others chime in below!
Sofia was one of the first directors I ever interviewed! I’ve interviewed her three times now! But the first was for Virgin Suicides, which is her most personal film. Her brother Gian-Carlo was killed in a horrific boat accident in 1986. The book helped her reconcile his death as a teenager. 🤍
Just got 'Kagemusha' on DVD. This inspired me to see it again. Saw it in the '80's. Indelible, hugely entertaining, a brilliant masterpiece, really unforgettable.
I saw Kagumusha at the Ckay Theater San Francisco on the evening of Monday, December 8, 1980. As the end credits rolled, I was told John Lennon had been shot..... Can't forget that.
Nice picks. Some films on the list for some reason I've stopped and thought and didn't do. Mostly just not in the mood for the subject matter. Which perhaps happens to us when we get older (anybody else over 50 think this also?). I remember years back living in NYC would always be at an art house cinema just thinking 'enlighten me'. I might just return and watch those now. Dan is such a s sweet and genuine guy. I would have watched the Piano Teacher if I had not already done so and and stumbled into the video store he worked at.
If I'm being honest a lot of these closet picks episodes seem a little pretentious but when he started with moonstruck I was like ok here we go I'm listening, Dan.
When I saw Dan Levy in that collection closet, my first thought was "Pick Moonstruck....Pick Moonstruck..." Dan Levy is that gay friend you just know you'll meet one day, and all lives will be improved.
Speaking of non-family-friendly movies.........My friend Duane, who was around 50 years old at the time, was hosting a visit by his parents. They were in their 70's. They were at the Blockbuster and he saw a movie that looked like it might be appropriate for them all to watch. A while into the film, things started to happen that were making everyone a bit nervous. These were Swedes. His parents were people who would make Surströmming every year at the holidays. So, they're watching this movie, and things become very uncomfortable for Duane. But his parents are being extremely polite, and continue to watch. The film was David Lynch's "Blue Velvet."
Dan Levy, sit me down and watch Moonstruck with me. I've never seen it. 🙂 I'm not going to wait for you though. I really need to remedy this situation. 😁
I like his move at the end. Everybody should have to end these videos by grabbing something that they haven't seen before.
Great idea. Make it a New Feature @criterion
And he picked Kagemusha, the Akira Kurosawa movie he made just before Ran. Well worth watching.
I like that.
I think it was isabel sandoval who also did it and that was a decent while ago now. I said it then too, its a cool move
Many guests who enter the closet do not give thanks for their visit--Dan does (Wim Wenders, also). Much respect. Eugene taught him well. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
"The Piano Teacher...it's not a comedy."
One of the most understated statements ever.
His anecdote on The Piano Teacher is hilarious
🤣🤣seriously
Just the mental image of an innocent family watching as Isabelle Huppert digs into the tissue bin at the peep booth
i did a spit take 💦
It gives me Bill Hader describing Salo vibes 😭😭😭😭
Salò is a family film
I would love to have been in the room when the family settled down for a viewing of The Piano Teacher.
Dan Levy is a godsend! He's so delightful and his picks are amazing! His shoutout to Parker Posey makes me love him even more!
I love the guests that just pick a feature out of random in the end. It speaks to a certain appetite of being inspired by whatever comes their way.
And just happens to pick one that Wim Wenders just selected (I just watched the Wenders one)
"Her time. Our time? My time?"
Dan Levy is an elder millennial icon
Election is an underrated movie. I have turned so many people on to that brilliant black comedy. I own Moonstruck as well. And agree with him about Parker Posey. I am hoping we'll get a Party Girl criterion selection soon.
Blind picked a kurosawa, sofia coppolla sent him champagne, its like the cinema gods are smiling on him😅
Kurosawa, top 3 or 4 filmmakers ever.
@@Jimmy1982Playlists For sure! I just got the dvd of stray dog, watched it 3 times already. That one really needs a blu ray
That tribute to Sophia Coppola was pretty cool
He's so WELL-SPOKEN here. He explained everything well clearly. Really audience friendly.
So charming, and funny! Love Daniel's personal anecdotes as he presents each film he's selected. I enjoyed like heck his movie "Good Grief." It's beautiful and heartfelt. Thanks to Mr. Levy and Criterion for this video.
Dan Levy suggesting The Piano Teacher to families without actually seeing it is a very David Rose thing to do.
When I saw Parker Posie in "party girl" that was it!! I was hooked🤤😍🤤😍
We're all playing catch-up with movies we should have watched, or paid better attention to.
What a great Sofia Coppola story.
not me choking on my breakfast while he recounts recommending The Piano Teacher to families.
same!!!!
Like "It's about a piano teacher. How edgy this could really be, common..." LOL
I absolutely love Moonstruck. It never gets old. What a great pick.
Dan, thank you for starting with Moonstruck. It’s perfect, and I love that you love it too!
Amazing actor. Incredible talent, and an all around lovable person! Loved Schitt’s Creek, loved Good
Grief. Keep it coming!
Oh, Dan. You and I could sit and watch Moonstruck and do every line together. I have it memorized. LOVE IT.
I watched The Piano Teacher with my mother once. Thanks for the recommendation, Levy.
LMAO!
Dan is absolutely adorable, unique , talented . Amazing actor and writer . Good grief was amazing !
Love how he closes his eyes and just picks the last one, more people should do that.
I had a very similar experience with a film class in which our screenings were at 9am on a Monday, resulting in a very sleepy viewing of The Spirit of the Beehive. Our screening of Martyrs, however, was difficult to sleep through

That discussion has Liev Schrieber has w/ someone near the end reminds of the “uhb” talk w/ an attentive listener during Metropolitan.
all time movie dad played by Pat McNamara in that movie.
I had my Film History screenings at 9am as well. Almost always fell asleep. I'm glad I'm not alone. Thanks Dan!!
It's really fun to find out someone you already respect has great taste in film, it's that perfect cherry on top
Will be watching Moonstruck tonight!
I actually watched 'Weekend' just the other day and Dan is right. It is in its own small way a remarkable film. The director Andrew Haigh's new film 'All of us strangers' has just come out and I'm now very excited to see it.

Just saw All of us Strangers. A beautiful and moving film, with Andrew Scott incredible in the lead role. Bring tissues. Made me cry more than any film in a long time!
Weekend is one of my favourite queer films. All of Us Strangers is beautiful and devastating.
I just watched 45 years and I did love it too. He just locks the camera off and lets the actors go for it.@@mostynf
"Yes, Mrs. Castorini, I would LOVE some oatmeal." has got to be the best delivered line in comedy. Also a huge Moonstruck fan.
Reese Witherspoon had already assembled quite an eclectic filmography by the time she starred in Election (1999). One of my personal favorites is Freeway (1996).
Man in the Moon - outstanding performance for someone so young. But yeah Freeway is gritty/grimy as heck.
Absolutely loved Good Grief! Well done sir 🎉👏🏻🎬
Moonstruck …. I just love him. And The Piano Teacher - “gosh, it packs a punch.” 😂😂😂
I watched Election about 100 times and never got tired of it!
Parker Posey, yes!
Goddamn I love Moonstruck. And that's a recent love because I've only ever seen bits of it over the years.
And goddamn, if a film ever has "feel" - from the music, to the lighting, to the way it's shot, to the folley, to the performances - it's Moonstruck. Just outstanding.
His Sophia Coppola story just gave me chills. So sweet 🥹❤
I LOVE that one of Dan's favorite films is "Love & Basketball". Great movie!
I love him! This was so great and it confirms that I should go back and watch all of Parker Posey's films. 💖
Dan..Dan Dan..so excited you are talking about Moonstruck. I was a Background Actor on that film. Whoa Who...go Dan!
Could've watched this for 40 minutes and just listen to him talk about films.
I wrote down the ones on Dan Levy's closet list that I've not seen because I fully appreciated that first pick, which is one of my favorites. That's amazing! I love me some Sofia movies
the BEST closet pick so far!!!
So many great movie picks. So happy you mentioned Election as that is one of my favorites that isn’t talked about enough.
+1 Moonstruck.
Many thanks to Dan! 🌕 I really enjoyed GOOD GRIEF (2023), by the way. ෴ I hope you get to speak in depth with Sofia someday.
Just got 'Kagemusha' on DVD. This inspired me to see it again. Saw it in the '80's. Indelible, hugely entertaining, a brilliant masterpiece, really unforgettable.
this is one of the best closet videos. great stories. great picks.
The Daytrippers is one of my absolute favorites, and Parker Posey is the best actor living. So glad he shouted her out.
I loved hearing his story about Sofia Coppola. Wonderful!
Moonstruck, yes, agreed :) I keep coming back to it .
legendary selections...tokyo story especially. impossible not to love this man
I could watch him talk all day ❤ Also, this film selection is so down to earth yet thoughtful! Great picks
Screening a movie in a morning class is so true (and night classes for that matter). Playing catch up too lol
What an awesome random choice in Kagemusha! That movie is brilliant!!!!
Those glasses and sweater combo is a home run.
You make Canadians proud!!
Appearing on this show is definitely my bucket list.
One day, someone will pick Portrait of a Lady on Fire as their Criterion collection. That person will be my favorite to be on this series.
This was so special and wonderful
Love and Basketball is one of my faves too ❤
I would pay so much money to see a movie about Dan Levy working at a 90's video store
I saw Kagumusha at the Ckay Theater San Francisco on the evening of Monday, December 8, 1980. As the end credits rolled, I was told John Lennon had been shot..... Can't forget that.
Picking Love & Basketball has my highest respects and regards. 💯💯💯❤❤❤🏀🏀🏀
"When I worked at a video store..." was that store called Rose's Video?
"So The Piano Teacher.... um, it's not a comedy"
Is one of the truest statements and most accurate ways to describe the movie in one sentence.
I absolutely did not expect him to choose love and basketball. This just made me an even bigger fan! 😭
dan, you cheeky, cheeky guy. this was great.
Hell yes Moonstruck!! I agree 100% with everything he says about that masterpiece
Dan Levy is awesome! I want him to review everything he’s seen in the CC!!!
I would LOVE to sit down and watch Moonstruck with you Dan Levy. Let me know if you have any openings in your schedule.
Dan, your comments on Moonstruck and Tokyo Story are the greatest truth. ❤️
Dave! Moonstruck!!!! Bravo!
Nice picks. Some films on the list for some reason I've stopped and thought and didn't do. Mostly just not in the mood for the subject matter. I liked the movie Weekend as well. OMG! I really LOVE Election! Such a good movie! Immediately became a Reese Witherspoon fan after watching it.
whenever I'm going to meet dan levy, we're about to watch moon struck. good to know.
finally!! someone randomized the selection!!
Election is one of my favorite movies of all time
Election is an amazing choice ❤
If I'm being honest a lot of these closet picks episodes seem a little pretentious but when he started with moonstruck I was like ok here we go I'm listening, Dan.
The Daytrippers is phenomenal!
When I saw Dan Levy in that collection closet, my first thought was "Pick Moonstruck....Pick Moonstruck..." Dan Levy is that gay friend you just know you'll meet one day, and all lives will be improved.
That description of Moonstruck is exactly how I feel about it.
Great picks! Election is perhaps my all time favorite Film!
Love Dan Levy - an amazingly creative individual. 🎉❤😊
I love Eugene Levy. It’s so nice to see he has such a fine gentleman for a son.
finally someone talks about moonstruck !!
I really want more on Parker Posey. Her catalogue includes Best In Show, starring his dad as well. What's the connection there?
Wonder if Criterion put Chungking Express back in their options. Insane that they dropped that incredible film.
Dan is so charming I cannot believe the DVD'S he has. Can't wait to watch Tokyo Story and The Piano Teacher.KUDOS

The film was David Lynch's "Blue Velvet."
I love Dan so much.❤
When you pick out films in The Criterion Closet, is it, technically, a write off?
Kagemusha. Good blind pick!
Dan Levy, sit me down and watch Moonstruck with me. I've never seen it. 🙂
I'm not going to wait for you though. I really need to remedy this situation. 😁
Yes on moonstruck!!!🎉🎉🎉
