While the humble Mora Companion is revered by many in our community, the Mora Bushcraft Black seems to be a fitting update and upgrade. However, what I hope to answer in this short video is if the Bushcraft Black is worth upgrading to if you already have the Mora Companion? Is there really enough changes and updates to make the switch worth it?

The Clippers have a broad short stick tang and they can break out of the handle when batoning. There's just not enough plastic handle left to keep the stick tang in when force is applied, so it's just for cutting. They changed this with the Companion that has a thinner but longer stick tang, like most other Mora's, and they later changed the handle shape and thickness. The blade thickness on the HD version is the same as on the Bushcraft Black and both have 90 degree spines. Handle ergonomics are personal of course but I prefer the HD handle. I don't like finger grooves most of all when in reverse grip and don't like that jimping on the handle. The BB has a slightly different sheath and the blade is 1 cm longer and coated.
I don't know about US prices but over here (Holland) the HD is less than half the price of the BB. (The normal Companion is even cheaper but has a thinner blade and no 90 degree spine).
So my advice for people on a budget is get the HD for half the price. For people not on a budget get two HD's, one on the belt and a spare one in your pack.
But a nice video so gave it a like.

That is right! Though, I baton with my Clipper all the time lol.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 It sure can be done with a Clipper but I did see videos where the tang breaks out of the handle. With the short tang it's also impossible to make a new handle on the spot. For sure hitting the wrong spot of the knife won't happen when you are focused but most likely when you are hungry, cold and tired. But they sure make very great and light weight outdoor kitchen knives. So I always bring a 2nd knife (can be a machete) for the batoning part that allows mistakes without breaking.

I'm curious where you're getting the info on the Companion HD having a 90 degree spine. The Morakniv site says it cannot work on a fire steel and posts a close-up for us to see.

    • @StevanOutdoor
      @StevanOutdoor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@saunamchan2908 Because I have them. It's not the sharpest 90 degree spine but not the 'unfinished' one you see on the normal Companion. So maybe it's 89 or 88 degree but good enough for me to get sparks from a firesteel.
Many sites also say to not baton with a knife because they don't want the claims or returns. But I can strike a firesteel with a piece of glass. Also with my Varestuleka's and they don't come with a sharp 90 degree spine but you have to find the right angle.

I do not see a whole lot that the bushcraft black does that the companion HD does not. Yeah, sharp spine which can be corrected.on the HD. Sometimes sharp spines are not always so great. I like the handle better on the HD over the BB.

You definitely bring up some fair points, I think the primary area where the BB excels over the Companions is in ergonomics, maybe not for everyone, but for a lot of people it is better.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 BB is okay. I like the Mora 2000 handle the best. I am not a big fan of knives with finger grooves. I can at least live with the BB finger grooves.

Sportsman's Warehouse has the Companion for $19, and the Bushcraft Black for $49. I'm a casual outdoorsman. At this time, I am satisfied with the Companion and can't justify spending $30 more for the Bushcraft Black. I'm perfectly capable of grinding a 90 degree angle on the spine to strike a ferro rod, and I don't use my knife for batoning anyway.

To tell you truth .the black has a coating , square spine ,thicker blade and longer handle. If you are not into modding your knife go with the black . For finer notches and carving I alway have my stockman pocket knife on me that dose that job way better. For someone that wants a cheap beater of a knife I would take the mora robust over the companion. A hot vinger dip and grind the spine it would be on par with the black but a little shorter blade for about 15 bucks. I have companions ,black and robust. For me the handle and shorter blade of the robust seems to be my go too most of the time. If i need to split big stuff I carry my camp ax most of the time.

Way overpriced at $50 imho... For me after many years of using knives the HD companion can do the same for way less. If someone has zero mod skill like sanding the spine and just wants a good scandi Bushcraft then the BB is great .I
Hey brother I bought a Tops Brakimo ....LOVE IT !! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Agreed for the price of $50 it is too much, but they regularly go on sale for $35 it really is a good alternative.

Yes the Brakimo is a well loved knife, and having handled them, I just don't quite fit it like I would like. But thank you, maybe one day it will show up on the "big screen"
