Norfolk State was excellent! You were obviously in a different section along the route. They performed in front of the viewing stand at the Norton Simon Museum and put on a show!
I’m an educator and the young people in those high school bands were underserved the band directors and adults in choice of music and drill. It was so low energy and we know our young people have a lot of energy and talent and they did not bring it out of the young people.
Hate to say it but the quality of these bands are all over the place.. Messy colorguards, our of step from all sections. Mixed up uniforms from variety of schools to make one band. Numbers look small. Selection for this parade was extremely hard to even be considered when I marched in the late 90's.
I agree, all of the highschool marching bands besides the japanese bands are field bands, not parade bands, so they do not know how to move in uniform in a block as well
I see what you're saying, but most schools can't really help whether or not they have small numbers. The country as a whole doesn't support fine arts programs like they used to. Luckily some school districts and universities might prioritize fine arts. Also I think it's actually generous if a school that was selected decided to share the spotlight and include sister schools in the same county or school district. Especially since the likelihood of that high school (representing their school district) being chosen again is slim to none, even though only a handful of high schools have made several appearances.
@ZebraLens I know when I was Marching in high school the minimum requirement for a band IF they were invited to march in TofR was 100 marching musicians. In 93 castle park high school dressed up the middle school band (8th graders) and added them to the block. It fulfilled the numbers and made them look awesome. They made sure those middle school students marched and looked just as good as the real high school members. Castle park took so much pride in being a rose parade band. I went there for a year in 97 so I know how much work went into it. You'll notice in the past the bands are huge. I was shocked to see the numbers with some of these groups and how sloppy they marched. This is the parade of parades and everyone will tune in all over the world. So I was shocked to see how relaxed these groups were. No excuse is good enough for mediocre performance. I will say the Marine band always looks sharp and not every band was meh, but there was a handful that didn't bring their A game. It's the Tournament of Rose's parade!

The neighboring county has small numbers too because they combined with each other to march in our Veterans Day parade where in years past they marched separately

WOW no one was in step and musically speaking pretty poor bands but I am sure they had a great time. Hopefully, 2024 will be better
失礼な事だと思いますが、ほとんどの学校はただ歩いているように見えます。
京都橘の良いところは、軍楽隊や儀仗隊のイメージが全くないところ。相手を威圧する様な行進は不愉快。あの笑顔とダンスステップしながらの演奏は、橘の高校生だけでしょう。過去の橘のパレードをみれば観客席の熱烈な声援、応援の大きさがわかります。今年、過去出場した日本の他のチームも残念ながら際立つて優れているわけはありません。
儀仗銃を用いているチームがあります。鮮やかな衣装ですが、これが軍服だったら軍隊の行進です。互いに儀仗銃を突き合う場面は、銃剣道を連想させ恐怖を覚えます。戦争を知らない今の子ども達が戦争に巻き込まれないことを願っています。
台湾の女子高校チームです。昨年、京都橘高校が台湾に招かれて公演した時も同じコスチュームでした。平和な日本からみれば不愉快かも知れませんが、マーチング自体軍事パレードに吹奏楽がプラスされた様なものです。私も不愉快ですが、台湾でも同じ考えをしている人が大勢いると思います。日本でもいまだに自衛隊の吹奏楽団の様なコスチュームをしている高校もあります。
戦争を肯定する気持ちは有りませんが、祭りの際に山車や神輿を守る為に刀剣等を持って従う人が居るのはどこの文化でも有ります。
マーチングバンド自体がオスマントルコ帝国の軍隊から生まれた文化ですから、それを否定しても何も意味は有りません。
儀礼に銃を使う事は自然の流れだし、中国、北朝鮮に接して準戦時体制の台湾や韓国なら、当たり前の事でしょう。
どんなバンドに出場して貰うかには主催者側が選考して決める事です。
それが不快なら、しょせんTH-camですから見なければ良いだけの事だと思います。
京都橘がローズパレードに二回も出演できたと喜んでたけど、ローズパレードってこの程度のものだったの？橘が歓迎されるはずだよ。よくこれで毎年、観客が集まるね。

日本のパレードだと、沿道はお祭り騒ぎですよね。ローズパレードでは行進というより、葬列に近い。
日本には笛太鼓の伝統的な山車行列があります。各地で開催され、とても賑やかです。巨大な大太鼓は腹にドスンと響き迫力満点です。
何が正解か解らないよね。
正統な伝統的なマーチングパレードはこの葬列形式かもしれない。
京都橘高校は私も大好きで大ファンです。動画も観まくりました。
京都橘高校が異例なだけであるかもね。
私が思ったのは、例えば参加チームのほとんどが橘高校みたいなパフォーマンスしたら、それってサンバカーニバルじゃない？ですかってこと。
実際、橘高校の曲にもサンバあるし。でも橘高校の上手いところはベースにマーチングがしっかりして、弾け過ぎず丁度うまい具合のポジションで盛り上げてること。
実はこれが橘の素晴らしいところだと思った。
