I Tried This Casiotron - And It Wasn't What I Expected

- I've been wanting to get a Casiotron watch ever since Casio has re-released them this year. The upcoming 50th Anniversary version (black and gold) looked great. However, when I happened to randomly come across one at a local watch store and was able to try it on, I didn't like it. In this video, I wanted to share my thoughts and ask if anyone else felt disappointed when they tried on a Casiotron. I really like Casio as a brand and I'll continue to collect Casio watches. It's just that this watch was such a surprise.
The Casiotron black and gold exceeded my expectations, and it is the most beautiful watch I ever own. I guess it's all about taste. It is a bit smaller than common watches, but I like that.
Glad you like it. It's smaller than I thought too. I'd still like to get a Casiotron one day. $200 would be a great price.
I bought one casiotron online with a gold fluted bezel and when I got it delivered to me I felt it was too small for even my 6.5" wrist. But still design wise I loved it so much that I decided to keep it and offer it to my wife.
Yeah, it's a little small. I really wanted one and am glad I got to try it on before purchasing. Maybe if the price was lower I'd consider it, even with the size consideration.
I’d not have bought a $600 watch anyway, so no disappointment here !
I’ve 2 ‘first copies’ of ‘poor man’s Casiotron’ - A171 !
The A171 watches are okay. I like the all black one but it's hard to find
I have the first version. It sounds like you were expecting a modern design, and this is explicitly a throwback to the 70s, I.e. small diameter, small screen and fairly thick. The technology of the time dictated part of that, LCD had been around for only two years or so.
Casio used the space the original design gave them to modernize the features (solar and MB6, which both make a watch thicker) while keeping the looks very close to the original.
The watch works for me, the modern features (Bluetooth, 5 world time zones, good backlight) are great for travel. I don’t mind the size at all. Higher water resistance would have been nice.
Oceanus watches are fairly large, I would definitely advise you to try before you buy. I have 6.5in wrist but it’s flat and wide and I can just wear my Oceanus OCW-T4000. The male end links make it wear big.
I agree with you about negative displays, BTW, I just avoid them except for MIP displays.
Thanks for the insight. I appreciate the features that Casio added in the new Casiotron while maintaining the look. I'm glad I tried it on before buying since this was high on my wishlist. I was hoping the negative display on this one would be better, but it's just as dark as the others. Nice looking watch. Just not for me.
I have the initial reissue version. Yes, it is a small watch. And yes, it wears awkwardly on my smaller wrist due to its thickness and the fact that the lugs do not angle downwards. But it is also mesmerising to look at thanks to its intricate mixed finishes. The LCD has the same STN display like the full metal series, which look noticeably better (higher contrast, more legible at odd angles). The only 2 things I dislike, apart from the price point: 1. The flat mineral glass will get scratched very easily (I put a screen protector over mine), and 2. The pushers get pressed easily (such as when I put my hand in the pocket). Overall I enjoy mine.
Thanks for sharing. I've seen the difference that the STN display has on my PRW-35 vs PRG-30. I didn't think it would be noticeable, but it is. I'm glad you brought up the lug angles. Perhaps that's why it didn't fit right on my wrist.
Again, I was just shocked it was in the store at the time. 😆
@@thissmallwrist I'd also add that the issue with the lugs and case shape is perhaps exaggerated by the fact that I couldn't get a perfect fit for my 16cm wrist. I am in between links & micro-adjustment holes. I find the watch to sit quite nicely on my wrist when I put it the tighter adjustment. But it gets uncomfortable when my wrist expands. Eventually I adjusted it to be on the slightly loose side - but this means the upper lugs can sometimes stick out of my wrist. Casiotron has a pretty long lug-to-lug for a small watch. I measured it at 48-49mm (from the protruding end links), so despite its small LCD and dial, it does not wear too well on smaller wrists
lol and this video wasn't what I expected... no watch, just hands gesturing?
Sorry, I didn't buy the watch, but was just able to try it on. So yeah, mostly just talking.
Great video, though I wish you had some footage of the watch on your wrist in the store
I should have taken video or at least a picture, but I was so shocked to see one there. Didn't know they were available so early at retail locations.
The MIP display on the GBX-100 is the only kind of negative display that's readable.
I'm seen the negative MIP displays. They look great. I'm hoping Casio uses them more in other watches.
@@thissmallwrist It looks great, even in low light. It's a bit of a battery hog and I don't think they're anywhere close to making it compatible with solar.
eh watches... never good enough, never cheap enough
😆
I'm not sure that that watch was ever meant to be "practical." There are watches that cost 10x - 100x - as much and are also incredibly impractical. It's not for me, but most watches aren't; 90% of ALL watches today are jewelry that will give you the approximate time, not real time pieces.
Casio's negative displays are generally worthless out of sunlight or with less than hospital levels of indoor lighting (save MIP, which seems to be okay); the larger displays like that of the AE1500 seem to be at least better.
I was just surprised how dark the display was, especially given that I was in a watch store with good lighting.
What a shame. 🥲
My first impression was that it’s a cool Colourway! 👌
But at the same time, VERY pricey for the third reissue of what was first advertised as the “limited production run” 😅
Not sure why the price continues to get higher. If anything, I thought the limited first run would be the highest and the others would be cheaper as they release more variations. Still holding out for the $200-300 version. 😄
