      Yes, one of his chief ploys is to play his children off against one another. He does it right from the start. Keeping them separate and destabilized is part of how he draws his power from them to be used against them. When the 3 of them come storming together into the room in the last scene, the first thing he does is try to get them to turn against each other by telling them to expel Kendal. When that doesn't work, he tries to pick off Roman to create a division. When that doesn't work, he erupts into a childish tantrum-even though he already knows he has them beat, but he can't stand that he's lost control over them!

    This episode had so many wonderful scenes that people have drawn attention to but besides the final one, Connor's lashing out has stuck with me. It's regularly repeated that he was basically their father figure, taking his younger siblings to trips, allowing them to be children and have good memories and the casual way that they rubbed him off... you could see his heart getting crushed. He doesn't mind when it comes to his father, he doesn't care after all these years but from his siblings... the children that he practically raised... it stings. Alan Ruck deserves more of the spotlight for Connor.

Finally seeing people break out of their shells, out of the bonds of Logan's iron fist is such a relief. The best aspects of the show have been when people like Ken and Tom have stood up against their "oppressors" I feel like the show continuing on will just lean into that concept.

      When she was first introduced, she came off as sympathetic, a mother who just wanted some time with her children but then she goes on and ignores Kendall’s despair and abandons her children the very next morning. Her hypocrisy is great in the onion scene where she accuses Shiv of knowing how to twist the knife and then says how she should have had dogs instead of children, which is her twisting the knife deeper than Shiv ever could. She sold out her children for her fiancée who is more interested in her ex husband and she knows it and yet she chooses that gold digger. I just hope her children abandon their connection with her fully, cut off all ties and toxicity. No more emotional manipulation.

    Season 3 wasnt my favourite but Im kinda coming to the realisation that isn't a writing problem, its a me problem. I wanted a put together Kendall, who would be fast talking, fast thinking, and beat his father in the way that the last episode of season 2 kinda indicated he would. What I got was a egocentric cringey self destructive arsehole and it didnt fit with my idea of what the season should be.
    But I think that was actually a brilliant piece of writing- people can change, but not that much and not that quick. Im just gonna have to not fall in the same trap for season 4-- right now, after the last episode, im expecting Kendall to be more supportive of his siblings, to own up to his mistakes- to be more reasonable. Thats what im hoping for, at least. But Im ready for him to be a slow learner.

      I totally agree with you, because that was kind of what I wanted from him as well. It was along the season, as I remembered his past stunts, that I realized this is who he is - when riding a high, Kendall becomes self-absorbed and delusional. The thing is, when he gets serious, he can have moments of sheer brilliance.
      I personally think we might see a more sharp Kendall this next season - someone who is finally coming to terms with who he is, wants to stop fooling around, and frankly doesn't have anything to lose at this point. Very curious how this will translate in regards to his relationship with his siblings, I definitely agree their relationship will probably improve from here on out, but this is Succession, we never know lol.

    An interesting thing about long-running series is the way that some actors deliver such compelling performances that “supporting “ roles move into the centre of action. Earlier, the idea of Tom and Greg coming out on top would have been like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern returning in the fifth act of Hamlet to take over the throne of Denmark. But here we are with Tom looking like a major power.
    That said, I don’t think that Tom will come out on top. Like The Godfather, this show is about family, and I can’t see Logan rewarding Tom for stabbing “Pinky” in the back. Logan has a long history of manipulating people by dangling prizes on front of them, and while he might value Tom as an intelligence asset, I don’t see him handing Tom the Crown Jewels.

      @@BlyGuy I guess that it's a tribute to the writing and acting that we are talking about what Logan/Tom/Shiv etc. will do, as if they were real people, not characters in a drama. That is to say, Tom's destiny will depend on the direction that Jesse Armstrong wants to take the series.
      Tom's character has followed an interesting arc. In season 1, he was a buffoon who's presence in the inner circle depended entirely on his relationship with Shiv. Hence the cringeworthy groveling and insecurity. Fast forward and he has become more confident - or is that arrogant. I'm reminded of the concepts of hubris and nemesis. The best pet about that scene is that Tom was right. It was the family and Gerry that wanted to push it under the rug and hope nobody found out. If Tom used his original plan and got ahead of the issue by having a press conference and threw the managers who no longer worked there under the bus it would have gone well. They could have put it all on Lester and then Lester would have still died later making it a non-issue

    I think Shiv and Tom will mirror Logan and Kendall in the way that the underdogs will finally earn the respect that they never had before because they betrayed them. I just remember the slight smirk/smile on Logan’s face in S2’s finale, when Kendall betrayed him during the press conference. Obviously Logan feels many things for Kendall, but I’m willing to bet that one of them is (kind of) pride, and in a way, respect, like “Ah, I enjoy this game and I enjoy a good adversary.”
    Shiv always underestimated Tom and thinks that he’s one of the weaker players in the game. Like Logan said in the family therapy episode in S1, “you married someone beneath your station because you’re so afraid of getting betrayed.” Now that Tom has proven himself to be one of the top players all along, she finally sees that he is on her level, if not higher. If their marriage doesn’t end in divorce (lol), they might actually start to love each other in a way that would work for the both of them. It would ofc be a messed up way to work through their marital problems, but again they are all messed up people.
    But that’s just my theory. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nero then claims a slave named Sporus, castrates him, dressed him in women’s clothing, and quickly married him. This is play by play how it happened here, with Tom killing Shiv (as they have often used the term in business) and literally calls Greg “Sporus” before making him the offer to be at the “bottom of the top”

    Each season, we see Logan test and reject one of his children. In the first season, Logan rejects Kendall after he sells off a piece of the company while he is sick. In the second season, he tries out Shiv, but finds her lacking, too. Then, he rejects Roman because of his odd sexual behavior. And, in fact, none of the children are as smart and wily as Logan. Is Tom? He shows he is a killer by turning on Shiv. But does he have the other skills Logan requires? That's Season 4. My bet: Tom will also be rejected by Logan.
    There's going to be a boardroom fight about the sale of the company - and remember Shiv has a seat now. In fact, the proper resolution for the company is to break it up into 3 or 4 independent pieces, with each one of the children getting a slice. No one can, in fact, replace Logan. The kids aren't in his league. But they could manage smaller companies. In real life, Murdoch sold off the bulk of his empire to Disney and only kept the news division, which he gave to his sons, James and Lachlan. Then, politics drove/forced James out.
    "The Godfather" isn't really about Marlon Brando. It's about Al Pacino. Drama frequently is actually about the character who changes. Michael Corleone is the one who changes. In this case, many of the characters have changed. Shiv has gone from idealistic outsider to amoral insider. Roman has finally become able to stand up to his father. Kendall seems to have gained the confidence and love that he has been craving. Greg has gone from buffoon to...well, we're still not sure. But Tom seems to have changed completely - from considerate to conniving.
    Can't wait for Season 4.

      @jaxsetbertoncarlism8873 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Logan's a shit. He won the boardroom coup because roman was so abused he craved for daddy, Ewan was a loon. He got incredibly lucky with the hostile takeover because of kens crash, and chose a CEO because of his boner. And keep in mind that he didn't really win last season. He just betrayed his kids, but he's divesting his legacy and retiring , thereby losing all political power being a news conglomerate gets him, simply because the company he tried to acquire ballooned so much in weeks the reverse happened. And this acquisition was to save his obsolete business; the hostile take over, the fine slapped by the feds all had nothing to do with it. His business just routinely slipped into a failure because he kept saying kendall wanted to buy a website. The dinosaurs era is long in the past.
      And guess what might have helped him if he hadn't been hung up over unionizing, contradicted his own principle of Gotta burn if you want to turn? Stuck with kens original acquisition of vaulter that has relevance in this era. That's right; Ken's deal which logan decided to disinherit him over because he ran to an elevator instead of measuring dicks, was their only possible saving grace.
      And keep in mind that toms paranoia, gregs snitching to gerrie are the only reasons most of the incriminating documents are gone. Things he had no control over. Toms press conference would have ruined him.

      @@jaxsetbertoncarlism8873 i completely agree with you. i think the show tries really hard to give a sense of godlike aura to Logan when in reality he was really mediocre with his business-wise decision, much to it because of his outdated view on the economy and just his plain explosive, self entitled, child like temperament. one thing he is good at is at pushing the buttons of his subordinates (including the kids), making them do what he pleases. in my opinion, with a company this big, you have so much fat to burn before a decision ends up being one that kills the business that your team of consultants and experts are perfectly able to revert it, like the show ilustrates it for 3 seasons (even tho the company was bought in the end lol). i dont think logan is "one of a kind" or "the best ceo for the job", quite the opposite actually.

    • @ushalexa
      @ushalexa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I agree. As you and Motorista Microlife detail below, Logan wins because he cheats and he's willing to do anything to come out on top, taking advantage of any weakness, even in those he claims to love. He's cunning and amoral. And I think this is part of the point of the show: he's not successful because he's full of insight or talent or vision or intelligence or any other attribute we like to use to glorify titans of capitalism; he's successful because he's an amoral tyrant. People are awed by him because he's rich and powerful; they don't stop to see that he actually doesn't possess any winning qualities, as a human being or even as a CEO. Still, his wealth and power are magnetic to those around him.

I guess what im trying to say is that that conversation of Tom and Greg "making a deal with the devil" I always saw it as Tom is going to go with Logan, which kinda sucks i guess since it wasnt that much of a surprise at the end (i didnt know HOW he was going to fuck em but I saw it as a clear sunny day that he was going to do it). i had originally felt that this 3rd season was slow, but upon rewatch i realized that i felt that way due to the difference in experience when watching weekly airings vs watching it all at once/at my own pace. when i had to wait all week for the next episode, i would build extremely high expectations for it to be as event filled or exciting as an episode like the shareholder meeting, for example. and of course when you have overly high expectations and they dont get met, you then feel disappointed. conversely, when watching it at my own pace i quite enjoyed the ebb and flow of the show and saw the necessity for some of the more slow or quiet or less explosive moments. i havent watched a show with a weekly airing schedule in quite a long time, or if a show had been aired weekly originally, i had seen it after the fact and didnt experience it that way (e.g. other hbo shows like GOT or euphoria). its interesting how the different ways in which we consume media these days influence our perception of it.

    Here's the thing I love about this show: most of the time, Logan's right. He was right not to give Kendall the CEO position, he's right not to trust it to the other siblings, and he's right to sell the company. None of them are capable, or quite frankly deserves it. And by selling he's also looking out for their interests and getting them a bigger piece of the pie.
    But at the same time, the reason they're all such flawed people is because of the way he raised them. He constantly manipulates and beats them down, giving them false hope when there's none to be given. He even pulled Shiv out of a promising political career, only to toss her to the side.
    But my absolute favorite thing about this show is that I firmly believe Logan does actually love his children. Like Kendall says, it's a wrong kind of love expression, but it's genuine, fatherly love. It adds a whole another layer of complexity to his character and the show itself.
    There's so much left unexplored about Logan that I'd love to see.

    Even if no one told Logan that the kids were planning to stop the sale/merger , and they showed up unannounced, after that point Logan can just make a phone call to his ex wife and then make the same deal. It would just be an hour’s delay on the deal.

    Oh, that wonderful succession theme! Like acid rain 🌧 falling, falling. It reminds me of the feels I got from hearing sopranos theme, but in the opposite direction.

    I think season 4 will be Connor's turn, but Tom is already so far ahead, I don't know how Connor could win.

    Some of my favorite scenes of this show are the interactions between Greg and Tom in all seasons. 🤓

    Grew up in a dysfunctional family with trauma bonds. This is the most realistic portrayal of that I’ve ever seen. This is my favorite episode of TV ever.
