The truth about the Amish religion

  • Have you ever wondered if the Amish culture would be considered a cult? In this video, I talk about what defines a group of people as a cult. This was hard for me to admit, but just remember, We love the Amish people! It is their religion, rules & traditions that I have found to be cult-like. The Old Order Amish community I grew up in was not as strict as some of the other Amish communities. Although we do not agree with the Amish lifestyle, let's remember that not all Amish people are the same, & we still love them.

    I left the Amish about 31 years ago and yes I agree with you. Since I left I always thought of them as a near cult but now I view of them as a cult. I am so glad that you did leave them. You are much better off. If anyone wants to argue with me, no need to. I will not argue. If you believe they are not then why is every aspect of your life controlled, or at least they want to control it if you desire to be a part of their community. And I was a minister for 14 years but praise God we saw the Light and found Jesus.

    My wife and I were never Amish, but use to visit many Amish families in Lancaster, PA when we lived near there 35 years ago. Since then we have watched several documentaries about members who are disfellowshipped due to their focus on the truth of the Bible, rather than what their particular Amish congregation teaches. Our prayers are with you and all other former members of the Amish church (in all their forms) as you seek Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, which as hard as it is, is worth leaving what you had for a relationship with the one and only Creator God! ❤ Bob and Mona

    I have lived close to the Amish most of my life in PA. I never thought of them as a cult, they are just part of the fabric of life in Lancaster County. But your reasoning is sound. I knew a man very much like you. He was born Amish, but his study of the Bible led him to leave and first become Mennonite, then he left them as well, and became Reformed in his theology. He gave me copies of the studies he did, and while they were not scholarly by anyone's view, I respected his effort to discover God's truth for himself and not to accept the beliefs of others.

    I was raised in a modern version of the Quakers alongside the Roman catholics. I went seeking by reading religious authors and books of a few saints for answers. Which led to books about trauma, boundaries, and psychology. I was led to an Orthodox Christian church by an event. This setup an awakening to the original church and brought answers that exposed the SELFISH people and their bending of the truth or outright deception to control people. I thank God for bringing me to the truth (which is Jesus ) and helping me to begin to heal. It will still probably require counseling. God Bless you for not accepting empty answers. You are so right. And I think the Amish (and lots of cults disguised as religions) ‘use’ Jesus or God as their ultimate cultleader. Bisshops just have to say It’s Gods will of Jesus died for us so you must (wear a cap/drive a buggy etc.). And nobody will question them. And it suits the bishops well that Jesus cannot call them out on it.

    According to Google, Amish is a sect not a cult, but the way you present it, and you know from your own personal experience, it must be a cult because it's religious leaders have the final say in what you are allowed and not allowed to do or believe. Jesus Christ is not Lord in the Amish system, but whoever is head of a particular Amish community. A cult also has a twisted version of Christianity where the people are told to have beliefs and religious practices which oppose Scripture but which their religious system explains as being pleasing to God.

      Putting someone in the bann is to not let that person come to church or not allowing them to eat with others in church until they repent of whatever the preachers want them to do. Well, in most of the Amish view, anyone who is not white is black. And they don't have many good things to say about them. But what's more important to the Amish is that anyone who is Amish, they respect and treat well. But anyone who is not Amish, they have a completely different view. And most people don't know it. That's why a lot of people think the Amish are so amazing because they'll be kind to your face but they're taught to never get personal with anyone who's not Amish because they'll become decieved. So the Amish will most likely be kind to you and maybe even call you their friend. But their intentions are to keep their distance from you if you're not Amish. Not every single Amish person is the same. But behind your back, I've never heard many good things said about non-Amish people.

    • @AmishTransformed
      @AmishTransformed  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Well, the answer to that question doesn't make sense, but I'll tell you what I was taught.
      Different Amish communities wear different types of Amish dresses. Within my community, we had to wear a specific type of dress, and it had to be the same as all others in my community. Anything else was not acceptable because it was the rule that everyone had to follow. When I questioned, my mother told me not to question, that is the way we've always done it, and I'm being rebellious. They believe that their clothing is a part of the rules that they have to follow in order to obey God, because God put them into the Amish and therefore they have to follow the rules in order to have a better chance of getting to heaven. They believe if you leave the Amish and start wearing 'English clothes', then you are surely going to hell. It's really sad and twisted. And like I said, there is not a sensible answer.

Considering Amish have an almost zero murder rate, close to zero divorce rate, children are raised in actual families, and as far as i know they don't think men can give birth, while i don't agree particulars on their religion (Im becoming Catholic), it seems they've figured out a lot that the rest of the country has not.

    So in your group, the ordnung comes exclusively from the bishop? Isn't an Amish ordnung normally from a mix of historical, associated-churches, leadership, and congregational input? As a result, aren't they often described as brotherly agreements? That wouldn't really fit the definition of one charismatic leader in control, not to mention the lack of charisma in the Amish bishops that I have known. That lack seems like it might be more of the problem.

    • @AmishTransformed

      Every Amish settlement has their own set of rules. If they want to allow something that was previously not allowed, then they vote on it in the Ordnung church. Then the Bishop gets the final say on the matter because it is his church. The bishop 'owns' the church, and the Amish would say it is his church. I don't know of any Amish community that doesn't do it that way.
