      I don’t think you are correct about leaving it plugged overnight effect the battery it’s basically a phone on your face but we leave phones plugged overnight and it doesn’t effect the battery I think it’s a software problem causing the issue let’s remember meta is not a software company heads sets are basically a modified version of android you can tell people can install apk on it and see the specs

    btw all modern devices have something called an ems board (electrical management system) which stops the device from taking power at 100 percent and the battery does not degrade if you leave it on a charger

      The things is, when I shut it off. After 2 days, the headset is out of battery. So inconvenient. With link cable no issue, I can play a longer time. I use a power bank and it extend the life a little bit, even that my power bank still have 50% when the headset is out of battery. I try with a heads strap plus the battery pack. No change, the headset does not do longer than 2hrs

    The frame rate and screen brightness makes a lot of sense why many users are seeing such poor battery life. It's not a matter of the Q3 being less efficient than the Q2, it's just capable of doing more at the cost of more power.

    Batteries don’t degrade for being plugged for a loooong time now. This is a problem from the old NIH batteries and specially cadmium batteries. LiPo batteries don’t quite suffer from the same problem.

    Even with a standard power (2.4 amps 12 watt) bank the battery still drains when your using it. This is especially true when your doing wireless PC at 120fps. PCVR drains alot more than standard native quest I've noticed. You need a USB PD powerbank with 18watt to actually prevent the quest from draining while in use.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair point, but I’ve done over 5 hrs off a Link cable without killing the whole battery, so in terms of extending the session (which is the point of this video) the cable still did its job.

    People have gauged the max draw of the Quest 3 in heavy passthrough at between 23 to 25 watts. You also need to factor in at least 18W to keep it charging. Best case scenario involves a battery pack that can output 40W. Thankfully, they make cheap power banks made to charge laptops under 10 ounces at 20000mAh which should net you 6+ hours. For the brave souls taking it outdoors for the day, a 50,000mAh pack in the pocket or bigger on a backpack is better. I'd hold off on all battery head straps until they offer at least 20W output.

    Ok... In this day and age... Any device that doesn't have overcharge protection, isn't worth buying. No one wants to spend their life worrying about plugging and unplugging their devices when theyre fully charged.
    The biggest thing that ticks me off about the quest 3 is the fact that when it's running low, I cant just plug it in and have it charge while it's running.
    This seems to be A HUGE problem and I hope it's only a software bug that gets patched
    I was in the middle of a game with my son yesterday and the quest just died in the middle of the game even though I plugged it into the wall while I was playing just to squeeze the last few minutes of our game mission... But alas, that didn't work and it died at just the wrong time.

    I've found a combination of things can help keep you playing for a long time. First I start out with nothing and play a round or two of Population 1, then I add a cooopoo battery pack for about an hour or so, then the other cooopoo. After another hour, charge the cooopoo's and add a direct usb-c cable link. That will last a really long time, around 2 plus hours more. If I'm still in the mood to game I've got the Coopoo's ready and waiting. This allows for a continuous experience if done right. Best of luck!

    Hey, the info you present on the Elite Battery Strap is misleading. Yes, it's 2330mAh, but that's because it's output is 7 Volts (high enough to charge the headset while playing). The Elite Battery Strap is still 18 WattHours. If you look at it as if it were a Quest2 battery strap at 3V output, then it would be near 5000 mah.
    As a comparison, the BoboVR battery says 5200mah, but its only 3V output. It has a similar battery size of 19.5 WattHours (Elite Strap is 18Wh). But the 3V output isn't high enough to charge the Quest3 while playing.
    Lastly, the Quest3 has a 19 Wh battery (4800 mah)

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      👍🏽 Bobo acknowledged this and I’m expecting when they do come back in stock to see a higher voltage battery.
      I’ve seen multiple complaints on Reddit about the Elite battery only giving another 90mins or so on full charge, which given the price isn’t great value.
      I also wish Meta would sell hot swappable batteries like other companies do, but the design of the strap seems to limit this. Apple’s going to have this same issue and already said they’ll have separate batteries for sale.

    • @liveopenmike

      That effect is minimized if it’s below 90 or 80 percent. I think at 80 and below the power draw from an external charger increases.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Six hours? You probably want something between 5,000-10,000 mAh that delivers at least 5V (maybe 7V) to keep the headset up that long. Like the Bobo batteries right now are only delivering 3V, so they're merely slowing down how long your Quest battery is losing power. That was good for about 5 hours on Quest 2 in my experience, but Quest 3's battery draw is higher, so people who got the retrofit are saying the battery isn't holding up.
      Whatever you get, make sure it has overheat and overcharge protection built into it. The last thing you want is to burn that port.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your Quest is technically always pulling power from the internal battery.
      To stay at full charge, whatever powerbank you are using has to be able to charge the internal battery as fast (or faster) than it is being drained. You want something pumping out at least 18 watts (multiple the Volt by mAh to get your wattage).

  • @Terrylovesjougurt

    • @liveopenmike

      No PC USB port & cord I know of can provide 18+ watts of power + data simultaneously. So your headset still slowly drains while you're in PCVR. I've done dozens of hours in PCVR already using a Link cable and my headset does not stay charge. Quest 3's draw is too big.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have a 10,000mAh 20W 15V powerbank. After a six hour session, the bank was at 40% and the Quest was still in the 90s. That may be overkill as most people aren't spending that long in VR in one sitting. The charger included with Quest 3 is 18W and another viewer pointed out that the BoboVR batteries are only putting out 3V, which isn't enough to keep the headset charged while playing. Bobo is likely going to have to manufacture new batteries.
      For searchable numbers, I'd aim for something around 5000mAh with at least a 5V/20W output. That should be good enough to keep the headset charged until the bank drains before the internal battery starts to go down.
      I also wouldn't plug it in if the Quest is at 100% if you pick up a stronger bank. I did this with my powercore and Quest 2 and it definitely degraded my Quest 2's battery over time.

    I use the Tiergrade 2-in-1 link cable with about 18 watts charging power. Does it damage my battery if it stays at 100% while playing? Like, should I leave it plugged and play unlimited, or should I allow the battery to lose power to then recharge?
    And is the input limited, or could damage occur due to the cable being plugged into 2 wall plugs? Thank you!

    • @liveopenmike

      Nope, you're good. 18W is just enough to keep the headset charged. I've played 10 straight hours in VR using a beefy power bank.
      The headset has software to limit the input and cut it off when the headset is charged, but I've seen images of burnt power ports from people plugging insanely high wattage chargers into their headset and overheating it. At 18W, I believe you are fine.

    0:48 I got a rebuff one for my quest 2 and of course, since the strap is the same, it fits the quest 3 like a glove. I am yet to run into any power issues but it is noticeable that things drain a bit quicker than the quest 2.
    2:34 possibly due to this. See I decided that I want to try using VD and reality mixer, but not only is it kind of annoying to get the color right (as VD basically chromakeys out a specific color that youre not supposed to see ingame) but the power draw is too much. Now why would I drop over 6 bills on a wireless headset (got the 512GB quest 3) so I can tether myself to a PC when I want to play PCVR games? I guess it's an option but when I can get a binbok elite strap with a pair of 8,000 mAH hot swappable batteries for $100 that just seems like the best option over turning graphics down and tethering for PCVR. In that case you may as well have gotten a quest 2 or a used rift s and saved yourself a few hunderd dollars.

      @liveopenmike my point was more of, if you are just going to turn down quest 3 framerate, resolution, textures, then turn off passthrough for longer battery life you may as well just save a bunch of money and get a quest 2 since that's pretty much the performance you'll be getting.
      And if you are going to turn off wifi and tether with a cable you may as well get a cheap used rift s and again save a pile of money.
      If you are going to drop a full $500+ on a quest 3 you would be better off also budgeting in $100 for a large battery bank or good elite battery strap to extend the battery life while still being able to enjoy all the benefits q3 has over q2 or tethered vr like higher framerates, resolution, textures, mixed reality and wireless pcvr. It's like buying a Ferrari then governing it to 60mph to save gas intead of getting a bigger gas tank so you can go 200mph on the track.

    Could you please explain something for me please? I am not a VR expert, but got interested about Quest3. So what I see is that Quest3 is capable of using it connected to a PC or using it standalone, that is why it has got a built in battery. But I also see comments, that say Quest3 uses battery even when connected to PC. I mean what the heck? Why would it use battery if it is connected to PC and gets juice from there? So the battery dies in about 2 hours time and then I can't continue playing even if connected to PC?

    • @liveopenmike

      More than enough. The Quest shouldn’t draw more than 20W from what I’ve read (the standard charger is 18W), so what you have is well above that spec.
      Check to see if it has overheat and overcharge protection. Most decent power banks do.

      I've seen that too. Basically there's a software feature built in that slows down the 'fast charging' when it gets to a certain threshold and the final 5-10% takes longer.
      I've plugged my headset in and it went from 20% to 90% in an hour, then took another 30+ minutes to fully get to 100%. It's to keep from overcharging/overloading the battery and potentially frying your charging port.

      Honestly, I doubt you even hit 10%. It's a much slower process than that. I have friends who did that every night for months (with their Quest 2s) and now their headsets get less than an hour on a full charge, so it's definitely a habit to break, but not a rapid decline.
      This is bad for phones, btw. We're just used to replacing phones more often and phone batteries last longer, so it's okay if it goes from like 12 hours to 8 hours (33% decline) in a year. You notice that less than when a VR headset does it when the starting point is two hours.

    Honestly the headset is a joke for the battery my quest 2 wasn't even this bad at all and it not even worth the upgrade to have a slightly more powerful and clear res I just use my pc anyways for the power so the hole thing isn't even with it other than the extra field of few and like I say little bit more clearer with better res

      My Quest 2 out of the box was 2hrs as well. The MR’s power drain is my biggest gripe for Quest 3. Still more than worth the upgrade IMO. I can’t stand putting my Quest 2 on anymore.

    Where this bull about not charging your device over some % is coming from? Battery controllers are smart enough to limit charging current at higher charge percentages effectively reducing the battery temperature and prolonging battery life. This was a problem only in early days of android, but to talk about this today? Seriously? And you think developers are that stupid to give you access to full battery capacity so they can have a wave of RMAs in a half a year because battery ran out of half of its cycles and lost 30% capacity? Guys, just relax and play VR, don't overthink it. If you want to be extra geeky about it then find the battery temperature indicator and test for yourself.

    You need to speak a little slower and talk a little louder. There are those of us that are in our 60s that are watching your channel and you're talking too fast and you're not speaking loud enough I have the volume turned all the way up and because you're talking so fast I cannot understand most of what you're saying. I would love to learn this stuff from you but slow down your sentences and turn up the volume when you're speaking. Thank you
