4:06 How to Remove Tofflemire/Matrix Band
Assembling the Matrix Band onto the Tofflemire Retainer
    1. Make sure the “U”/”Smile” of the Tofflemire is facing you (up).
    2. Turn the “Outer Knob” (at the bottom of the Retainer) Counterclockwise until the end of the “Spindle Pin” is not blocking the “slot” removing the spindle from the diagonal slot until matrix band is placed into diagonal slot.
    3. Turn the “Inner Knob” clockwise until square matrix band holder (with the slot) is almost to the top of the “U Shape” part.
    4. Bring both ends of the matrix band together gently so it doesn’t make a crease the band. The occlusal edge has the large circumference. The gingival edge has the smaller circumference.
4a. With the diagonal slot of the retainer facing you, slide the joined ends of the band into the diagonal slot & continue going through the “U shape” with the band.
Depending on the tooth being worked on, the matrix band will get moved to either the right or the left.
5a. If the Matrix Band is placed to the far Right of the inner
“U Shape/Smile”, it is prepared for teeth in the upper right & lower left quadrant (#1-5 or #19-21).
5b. If the Matrix Band is placed to the of the far Left of the inner “U Shape/Smile”, it is prepared teeth in the upper left & lower right quadrant (#12-16 & #28-32)
    6. To tighten the Matrix Band (to stay firmly in the diagonal slot and not fall out), twist the “outer knob” (smaller knob at the bottom) to the right, (Clockwise) to move the “spindle” up into the “diagonal slot” that is holding the Matrix Band to securing hold the band in place. This will secure the band in its place.
    7. Turn the “inner knob” (larger of the two knobs) to adjust the diameter of the band to fit either a molar or premolar. To make the diameter smaller (premolar), twist the inner knob (larger knob) to the right (Clockwise).
TO PLACE THE MATRIX BAND AROUND THE TOOTH
    1. You will place the smaller circumference side (Gingival Edge) of the matrix band towards to gingiva and the larger circumference side (Occlusal side) of the matrix band around the crown of the tooth or the occlusal surface.
    2. Once the Matrix band is around the tooth (the Retainer is outside the mouth towards the midline), Hold the matrix band in place with your finger while you tighten the band to fit snuggly around the tooth using the inner knob (larger knob), so you have as little space between the band & tooth as possible.
    3. Use cotton pliers, to place a wooden wedge FROM THE LINGUAL INTO the mesial or distal, whichever “wall is missing” between the matrix band and the tooth next to it, to close closed the space between the matrix band and tooth preparation.
REMOVING THE TOFFLEMIRE & MATRIX BAND
    1. Untighten the band using the “outer knob” (smaller knob at end) and turning the knob to the left (Counterclockwise) to remove the Tofflemire Retainer from the matrix band, leaving the Matrix Band still around the tooth.
    2. Gently lift the matrix band from around the tooth in an occlusal direction, using a back and forth motion (seesaw). This will avoid fracturing the new material.
    3. Gently remove the wood wedge using the cotton pliers and place on the tray. NOTE: The wooden wedge stays in place until the matrix band is removed to help prevent fracture of the new restoration until the Matrix band is removed.
