Well by the time you've recorded a song and played it live for a while, think about all the damn times you've been playing that song over and over again in rehearsal. You're bound to change up some parts and improv here and there, if not just for the sake of entertainig yourself.
Im in a jazz band, and in jazz there generally is a pretty simple song structure based around some number of riffs and all the members of the band just improvise over the riff and stuff. His approach to drumming is sort of a hybrid between metal's rigid and technical structure and jazz's looser and more interprative flow. I really like his style
matt garstka's cover of 'get your freak on' was better than both of their entire careers work combined imo. He could most likely do everything they do a bit better in a matter of minutes. :P
bruh i'm about to TRY and cover this song with my band (i'm the drummer). please pray for me because i'm about to look like a fucking idiot even attempting this
@@cordomum Dude! Give me a link when it's finished. I started playing drums when I was 13, so I have a special place in my heart for drummers. I've also had my own share of flubbed drum covers, so I know how difficult it can be to pull off some songs, lol
@@MikeyJBlakeJR just because of this comment, i will record my cover. i'll send it (but since you've heard the song, it's gonna take a month or two at the MINIMUM--thank god i have a guitarist who can actually crush this thing)
sadly it is true that that happens. their guitar parts in most of their songs are about the same skill-wise. he may just be the creative face of the band responsible for writing all of their masterpieces.
I hear what you're saying, and he's fucking incredible. Here's the thing, Tosin, with Misha as a producer, wrote most of the songs on the first 3 albums. It wasn't until _The Madness of Many_ that the 3 of them (Tosin, Javier, Matt) wrote an album from beginning to end together. Even on "The Woven Web", Matt says Misha wrote the thumping part that everyone cums over just to see if he could play it. Just a little insight.
I agree. Buying an 8-string just to use you're lowest string all the time with the tabs beeing "0-0-0--00-0-0-0--0" for "true djent" is pretty useless. These guys really know how to let those 2 extra strings shine.
+Blizzards yep, exactly. The way an 8-string should be played is exactly like a 6 string would be played, in the sense that those two extra strings don't change the purpose of the guitar but rather opens up more options for the player. I see too many guitarists ignore everything below the 8th 7th and 6th string when playing, and that's just a poor approach to what's supposed to be 8 strings of guitar, not three.
We all know Tosin is an absolute beast on the guitar, but I love watching Javier his fingers don't seem to move a millimetre more than necessary to nail every single note. I love watching players with such economy of motion! Is that weird?
I really appreciate that people take the time and effort to find this video in the sea of information that our world beholds, and to observe and process this single 4 minutes and 50 seconds of beautiful musical construction, and then complain and moan about it like somebody is actually there to listen to their useless criticism. Rock on you guys!
This song live sounds HELLA punchy. I saw (and met) these dudes at a concert and when this song came on, every hit of the bass drum and palm muted note was like a punch in your whole body! Was frickin awesome!!
Blueskythinking Suggesting that playing heavy music is automatically wasting musical talent is fucking asinine. I’ll name you dozens of extremely heavy bands with severely high levels of musicianship. Origin, Hate Eternal, Vitriol, Vital Remains, Nile, Hideous Divinity, Arkaik, Monstrosity, Behemoth, Meshuggah to name a few.

Saw them live tonight at The Mayan, LA. Absolutely amazing performance. I feel like Tosin overshadows others when I listen to their albums, but man, Matt(drummer) was A REAL BEAST live!
I could see people giving them shit for being "boring" and not showing a lot of passion/emotion, but honestly these songs are so technically demanding they easily get a pass for it. They really let their instruments do the talking, do the emotion seeking for them.
I haven't come across many of those "No melody/mindless technical music" on this video but, This is beautiful. So much melody and it keeps you on your feet :-D
bravo! the surgical precision on this piece is inspiring. the drummer is great. takes me back years ago when I was a beginner and I used to admire the calmness on professional drummers. still have quite a way to go to get to this level though :)
It's absolutely insane to see how clean they've become over the years. Not thayy they're sloppy here, but the 2020 live version of tooth and claw in Anaheim is fucking nuts. "This one's a little more straightforward"
OKAY SURE WHATEVER YOU SAY
Jones Kolbinsky he said that cause it’s the only one that actually stays in 4 for most of it 😂😂
Listening to the bit at 0:55, this is definitely not straightforward for us mere mortals...
Matt Garstka decides that his original compositions are too simple and improvises over top of them. Because he is Matt Garstka
That's Matt Gartska logic right there.

I'm sure there are several technically complex drummers, but Matt is seriously underrated
Matt is one of the best metal drummers of all time. Also one of the only ones who has graduated from Berklee for music!
hell yeah. he's got a lot of chops and hip hop feel under his belt from there I feel like. used to watch him in one of the shed videos from Berklee
sincerly, for me he is one of the best drummers i've listened, if not the best
i mean, in his style, of course. we can't compare him with drummers of different styles because that would'nt make sense
not making any comparisons/competition, but check out Billy Rymer
I've been a musician nearly all my life and I will never understand how people can get this good. These guys are legendary at what they play.
when you're watching tv, or hanging out with friends and family, they're practicing. sacrificing all of their free time to practice.
Just got a student that want's to learn this...

People giving this the thumbs down shouldn't be listening to music that's far too technical for them to comprehend the sheer brilliance.
Totally love this song, but I really wish they'd done more with that 3:34 riff. Sounds absolutely godly, especially on the studio version.
