  • Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, has a rich history that dates back to its founding. Here’s an overview of its historical timeline:
Early Origins: The area has been inhabited since at least 3,500 BC, with evidence of early settlements. It became an important trading point due to its strategic location by the Baltic Sea.
Medieval Era: The first written record of Tallinn appears in the 12th century. In 1219, a Danish king captured the settlement, which was known as “Terra Mariana.” The city expanded under Danish rule and became a member of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century, significantly boosting its economy and trade.
Gothic Architecture: The medieval period saw the construction of impressive brick buildings, including churches and town halls, many of which still stand today in the Old Town. Tallinn's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its well-preserved medieval architecture.
Swedish and Russian Rule : In the 16th and 17th centuries, Tallinn fell under Swedish rule, leading to a period of cultural and economic growth. After the Great Northern War, Russia took control of Tallinn in 1710, and it became part of the Russian Empire.
20th Century: Estonia declared independence in 1918 after World War I, and Tallinn was established as the capital. However, it was occupied by Soviet forces in 1940, then briefly occupied by Nazi Germany before returning to Soviet control until 1991.
Modern Era : Estonia regained independence in 1991, and Tallinn has since emerged as a vibrant, modern city while retaining its historic charm. It is now known for its diverse culture, technology sector, and tourism.
Tallinn’s history is marked by its resilience and transformation, making it a truly fascinating city to explore.

"Võru" means circle in Estonian, and the city's design theme was a kind of wordplay.
