The amount of people in Facebook resin groups that say ashtrays are fine is astonishing to me... and the second I open my mouth to say it's not fine, I'm giving the wrong information and being a buzz kill. It's very scary.
I usually see pretty decent advice in my resin groups. People say to put a bit of scrap metal or something (some people say use a quarter, but if you use something that size or larger, should be fine) I think the resincrete is props ably a better idea, but I question the ability to paint them? I think one may want to add the paint to the mix before it Dries and then seal it after. But that's just my suggestion
I hear that all the time and it is so worrying. Resin is great but it’s not safe to use for everything. Punkbunni13. You are 100% correct and trying to help, not be a buzz kill. Don’t let these people get to you.
I just think that it isn't safe to use resin for an ashtray or a candle holder. If you think about it, you can warp/melt resin with a hot coffee mug or an embossing gun. So thinking it can withstand the heat of something that has a flame is sort of illogical. And I doubt anyone thinks it is a good idea to toss some plastic and/or resin into a fire and breathe it in...... Putting a piece of metal isn't going to help if someone doesn't completely snuff a cigar or stop someone from missing. Plus heat can radiate from the tip. I just think that while resin is so pretty and awesome - it isn't worth it to use it for things it isn't meant to be used for.
@early2exit, many feel it's an addiction that few can concur. Ot is an addiction, bit to ASSUME they don't care about their health is a bad ASSUMPTION to make.
I made a few of the skull ashtrays with resin and told my customers that they weren't to be used as ashtrays and they were for decoration only. But, now thanks to this video I can start making them with resincrete and not have worry about it. Thank you Steve. 🙂
My Grandmother made resin ashtrays for all of her daughters and grandchildren. She took a class at the local college, this would be around 1972! I didn't like mine, said it smelled weird and put it under a leaky plant. Years later I had it in a garage sale and caught my mother stealing it. I let her. I had no idea they were a bad thing until YOU taught me that today, Thanks Steve ):
I had no idea that resin ashtrays were not safe. I have two out of three of those molds and they have been used as ashtrays. Thank you for the warning. I won't be making any more of those! The skull ashtray is one of the ones I have. I love what you did with yours!
They laughed at me when I explained that when they use plastic grinders, tiny plastic bits are now in their herb, and they will now be inhaling toxic plastic fumes every time they smoke.
I'm in a resin group on FB and I think I get a grey hair every time someone wants to use real candles in candle holders, make resin herb grinders, put fresh flowers into resin, make chopping boards etc..thankfully ashtrays seems to be a minimal thing in the group. I mean i'm still learning stuff on this journey but wow..how hard is it for people to do their research before they spend money on supplies?
Thanks for info. I did actually have my eye on some resin ashtray molds and it didnt even occur to me think of those risks involved. Great info per usual. Happy New Year.
I done lost my ever lovin' mind with my laser cutter in my small craft room. I removed it plus the exhaust cover, cleaned up and have set up my Resiners Purair unit. So tonight I can get back to my instant gratification love 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
If it's the 2000F degrees Rust-Oleum 260771 Automotive High Heat Spray Paint clear coat, yes on any "crete", but I wouldn't trust a spray coating to be an effective barrier on any plastic including resin.
Not with any regular paint. Those are less heat resistant than the "crete" products themselves. If you color with water based inks or concrete dye mixed in I would think it would work, There is also automotive high heat paint, which is even better than stove paint, up to 2000°F, Rust-Oleum 260771 Automotive High Heat Spray Paint, Comes in clear, silver, red, and black. Stove paint only withstands up to 1200° F
Great idea! I have not made ashtrays, but do have the skull ashtray mold, so i will be using my resincrete. I have heard that some that make the resin ashtrays use something similar to the stove paint, it is Rust-oleum High Heat Ceramic coating 2000°f. It is clear and used on engines. What is your opinion on that? TIA
Thank you, I just bought that, it even comes in Clear, Aluminum (silver), Flat Black & Flat Red. I just bought the clear so I can use it with marbling, multi-color pours, terrazzo, etc. Right now, Jan 7th it's on sale for $7.57 for the clear or aluminum (silver) on Amazon in the US too!! Rust-Oleum 260771 Automotive High Heat Spray Paint, 11 oz. I wouldn't trust a spray coating to heatproof resin though.
In the US, the toy "Clackers" stopped being produced. Do you remember clackers? Can they be made from resin or better yet SHOULD they be made at all? :)
Do you know WHY "Clackers" were BANNED? Not just discontinued, but outright banned??? The acrylic balls were deemed unsafe as they were found to shatter and cause eye damage. Look it up. How's your insurance?
Not only is it dangerous, it's downright STUPID!!! Putting a cigarette out in a resin ashtray releases noxious chemicals into the air and breathing them in is worse than the cigarette itself!!! Making them for decorative purposes is different… but making them to be used and making them with resin is just stupid! What you did with the resincrete and the stove paint is the way to go!
I read this, more than once mind you, as uniformed buyer. I wondered why buyers not in uniform were less susceptible to resin fumes 😂. I am the archetypical unINformed buyer 😂
Someone once told me: They are smokers. Resin isn't going to kill them any faster than their own bad habits I'm an ex-smoker, so I don't appreciate hearing that.
@ Sounds like folks without a conscience, willing to make a few bucks no matter who it hurts. The smoker isn’t the only one who would be exposed to the toxic fumes.
I have been watching you for a while now and enjoy your art! I have a Q: I have been on the hunt for a regular size cake safe mold… I have been unsuccessful. Would you know where I can find one? I would love to hear from you!
My grandson begged me to make him a set of praying hands, or Christ Hands as some call it. I gladly did, he used it as an ashtray and i was so hurt. Thats the only use he. Saw for them!!!!!! Also, the companies need to STOP referring to molds as ashtrays!!! It's just stupid to do.

It's scary how many people make and sell resin ashtrays and grinders etc because they saw someone else do it and "it was fine"
They laughed at me when I explained that when they use plastic grinders, tiny plastic bits are now in their herb, and they will now be inhaling toxic plastic fumes every time they smoke.
Unfortunately you can't teach stupid. We can only do so much

That's you Steve for sharing very valuable information. It truly can save a life.
Thanks Steve. Appreciate the education opportunity.
Thanks, Im always very concerned with my health when Im smoking cancer sticks!
I do some painting. I would love something like the skull one as a brush rest! You could always sell them as dual purpose…😊
Thanks for info. I did actually have my eye on some resin ashtray molds and it didnt even occur to me think of those risks involved. Great info per usual. Happy New Year.
When I've sold ashtrays I always tell the buyer that it's for display user only and that it should never be used to stub out a cigarette

I would like to see a video from you in which you briefly summarize which everyday objects can be made from resin and which we should avoid.
Can use hi temp clear coat
No. That would be safe for a hot mug, not a live flame.
If it's the 2000F degrees Rust-Oleum 260771 Automotive High Heat Spray Paint clear coat, yes on any "crete", but I wouldn't trust a spray coating to be an effective barrier on any plastic including resin.
@@Soifdesang9 works absolutely fine never had an issue
What do you use to clean your mixing cups?
Do you forsee any issues using the clear high-temp spray paint?
If you didn’t want to call them ash trays you could always say they were paint brush holders then you could make them out of resin 🤔🙂
Some use them as catch trays.
I finnaly got the kit and i love it.
Happy New Year Steve. Love this idea. If able to purchase a clear stove heat spray, would you be able to colour the dish before spraying? Thank you x

Love the skull. I know its an ashtray but would make a fab trinket dish too. ❤
I have that mold. It does have distinct places for cigarettes but you will have to sand the points down they are sharpish
That's how I was looking at it too, it's a stunning mould 😍
@izzpop781 I've done several. I actually thought it was a dish at first. But the difference in application of mica and alcohol it's truly beautiful.
Great idea!
I have not made ashtrays, but do have the skull ashtray mold, so i will be using my resincrete.

These are awesome. Thank you for sharing. Question, could the heatproof paint be used to hydro paint the resincrete?
Use it as a trinket dish for jewelry, car keys 🤔
I like resincrete, it’s so forgiving.

I’ve had the skull one for years but I advertise it as a trinket tray.
sell something original
Very cute❤❤❤
I’ve seen so many people selling epoxy resin ashtrays. It appals me. I worry for the uninformed buyer.
