I think the depression and body image issues young women feel have nothing to with comics or videogames, and everything to do with looking at more attractive, higher status women on social media. If a teen girl is used to getting 20 likes on her photos, but watches the hottest, most popular girl in school get 1000 likes, she is going to feel depressed about that. The likes almost serve as an objective measure of the chasm between them. Sure the average girl will be attractive to lots of guys, but she will never have the access to the highest status of guy that she dreams of, which the girl who gets 50 times the likes she does will have. And that hurts.

To get married (and have children) you must win a man, for that you must be good looking. And if you are not married and with no kids you are a loser and a leftover woman. No matter your career, your education and overall life. That's why since an early age girls are constantly judged by their appearances and openly shamed for it. The preconception discussed is rooted in this. I'm from quite a conservative country with even more conservative neighbours, so I know how it works. See Modern Wisdom podcast with Chris Williamson interview with the data scientist from the dating app Hinge. This wasn't too much of a problem before dating apps because physical beauty is relatively less important in determining mate choice for women. Still important, but not as much as it is for men. The thing is that men are also more easily satisfied: if a woman is healthy ( has the typical markers of good genetic baggage: symmetry, proportionality) and younger (the typical markers of fertility or reproductive good health). Shad, the data(dating sites)shows based solely on physical looks, over 80% of men are considered highly unattractive. Were as for women its was around 50 50, meaning most are considered average or decent looking.
Also the reasons for women going to such lengths to look attractive is to attract the top 20% of men(and that mean competing with every other women for these extreme limited number of men). That and its a means of survival, as being attractive tends to help garner more protection and provisions from men. Men too also do go to such lengths, but are massively limited on what they can do(which is basically just physically fitness, and dress), as female standards for men are much more extreme. For instance you can't just magically grow taller, nor grow an amazing chiseled jawline ect(there are extremely painful, expensive and time consuming surgeries, but even they are limited in what can be achieved). So as a man your either born good looking or your not.
PS: for the circus out there, I'm strictly referring to the physical here and not other factors as status, power an capability.

Listening to you guys talk, I think a thing you are missing (Tyranth in particular) with female beauty vs male attractiveness is fashion, hierarchy, and genetics. Tyranth is placing a lot of weight on attainable attractiveness such as weight management and muscle, which are important factors in male attractiveness (ties to productivity), but for women face symmetry, bone shape, body proportions (boobs, ass, hips...), skin condition, hair condition, and other similar factors are, I think, far more important then they are for men. Some of them like skin and hair can be helped by diet and products (skin condition is a large part of why makeup is so prevalent), but some are not changeable at all (without serious surgery). Factor in female competitiveness and/or conformity with each other, and female hierarchy, and how that ties to fashion, and women can be under a lot of pressure to look a way they just can't, with the ghost of a primordial instinctive axe ready to fall if she can't (far as I understand it, female hierarchy, conformity and competition is about old tribal instincts, conforming to the group to indicate one is part of the group and thus qualifies for it's resources and protection, while seeking to find a good place in the group hierarchy, hence conformity and competition. Historically we mostly did this with clothes and other material presentation, but post WW1 and 2 and the fashion shift from clothes to the body following fabric rationing it's become very toxic as bodies themselves became fashion, bringing genetics into play like never before).
Edit: to clarify, I am not opposed to presenting female attractiveness, just pointing out why women are indeed more sensitive, and some of the differences between female beauty and male attractiveness which Tyranth doesn't seem to understand. Also not saying that men are not impacted by pressure to be attractive, but working out can be an easier/healthier/cheaper rout to improving that compared to things like plastic surgery that in some places is so common among women it's normal.

When the messages is “healthy is beautiful at any size” that’s great, because there are individuals who will never match beauty standards no matter what they do but who can strive to be healthy and take some care for their appearance (clean and tidy), which does impart a degree of attractiveness. And being able to accept oneself with a reasonable standard for one’s individual circumstances is necessary for mental health. But when the message is “beautiful at any size, no matter how unhealthy” then it’s parting company with reality and turns just as destructive as “beauty only exists within this limited size range.”

I actually have a number of thoughts about this whole thing... but I'll limit this to just a few; I'm guessing this will still be long.
    - I can attest to that concept of how loving a person makes that person seem like the most beautiful person in the world to you. Some years ago, there was a woman whom I became close friends with, and eventually there came a point when I realized I'd fallen in love with her. It took me by surprise, in part because, if I'm being truly honest, I wasn't physically attracted to her. She was kind of heavy --- and even if she weren't, some men might have found her attractive, but I still don't think I would have found her to be "my type." But she was one of the best friends I ever had, she showed me love during times when I desperately needed it, and (I mean this as the highest possible compliment) she was already motherly just by instinct. She just knew when to be firm, and when to be gentle in dealing with people; and the only times you'd see her get truly angry were in situations where she was trying to defend or protect others, especially children.
I felt happier when I was with this friend, I felt like it was safe to be my real self around her, we were equally willing to let one another take the lead at different times, and since we both worked at a job taking care of children, I already had some idea of what it was like to work alongside her in a family-like environment. And that's how I developed enough interest to want to see if she and I might have liked being more than friends.
I had to temporarily say goodbye to her when I left for school, but when I returned home at the end of that school year, I was eager to reconnect, and maybe see if we could have any further relationship.
...And then the day before I was going to call her and ask to meet up, she was killed by a reckless driver. It's been eight years since then, and even though I've been able to experience other loves and losses with other women... it still hurts. I've needed to move on, yes. But I still love her. And I just want to say, attractive or not, she was and always will be exceedingly beautiful to me.
    - Story aside, I agree with the vast majority of what you discussed here. Thank you for expressing all of that.
Just one thing I wanted to add: yes, in most cases, tackling obesity is a simple matter of eating less, eating better foods, and exercising more. It's as simple (albeit difficult) as that.
But in some cases, there are further complications, like hormonal problems, faulty organs, and things that may need to be addressed with surgery, medication, and/or therapy, in addition to those changes in eating and exercise habits. So, I'm not totally on-board with Dove's idea of "treat all people as equally attractive;" I think they're taking their idea too far. But I do try to be sensitive towards people who may have weight problems that stem from more than just overeating/lack of exercise. I just want to make sure to mention them.
    - 35:47 "Do you feel represented in Tetris?" Ha ha ha! Amazing. But it so happens that yes, I do. Since my real name starts with a "T," every time I drop a T-shaped block, it feels like signing one of my initials into the game. So there.
    - Surprisingly, there are a few of these "body positivity" ads that Dove has done, which I actually appreciated. Definitely not this one --- goodness no, ABSOLUTELY not this one --- and a number of their other ads leave me just as perplexed, or sometimes even annoyed.
But for instance, there was one ad about... what do we tend to call it? "Social media image control?" I mean the concept where people, especially young people, feel pressured to constantly present themselves on social media as dazzlingly pretty, or always impressive, and essentially, "perfect." The ad shows a teenage girl putting on make-up, setting the light in the room just right, using a photo filter, and... I think I remember she even uses photo editing software before uploading the picture. But the ad plays this whole scenario in reverse, and in the end (which is the beginning) you see how sad and lonely this girl is, who is still pretty... but ordinary.
When I saw that ad I thought, "Yes, THAT is an issue we really need to address. Even if this PSA came from a cosmetics company, thank you for doing that."
But this one? Yeah, as you laid out, representation in video games is not the issue they made it out to be.
    - On the topic of the brand, and you wanting to stop using it... well, the bad news is, the parent company of Dove is Unilever. If you want, you can look up Unilever's Wikipedia page, and in the margin you can click a link that says "See list of brands." They own a lot of food, drink, home care, and hygiene and beauty products. It might be hard to even remember all the brands they own, let alone avoid all of them. Still... good luck, if you want to try.
OK. As I said, this was long. But I'm done now. Thanks again, you guys, and have a good day.

I don't have time to watch the video at this point but I read your comment. I'm sorry for what happened. I had a huge crush on a girl when we were about 12-14 after which it stopped. Turns out she had bad trauma and mental problems and she ended her life when she was 15. I don't want to lie and say it affects me anywhere near where it seems your trauma affects you. But it's this and other things in my life that prove to me how difficult it is to move on. So yeah I feel you.
I find that I've become kind of desensitized to things like this which is interesting cause I'm just 20, so it wouldn't feel genuine if I told you something like "don't give up" cause I think the reason people say this is typically emotional, whereas I'm sure you've heard this before so I don't really feel like it's even appropriate for me to repeat it. What I was thinking instead is that maybe there is some good in that you still feel it, that you feel something. If I was in your place I would probably not feel as bad because like I said I'm kinda desensitized, but I'm wondering whether that's ultimately a good thing or not.
I was recently (and kind of still am) in a situation where I found some new friends who I think are really cool people, but funnily enough I don't feel like either is my type physically either. This really got me thinking about how much do looks matter and stuff. I'm aware of the idea that love makes someone more attractive. But here I am wondering if I can even develop a level of love that is sufficient for that, cause what I really mean by desensitized is there seems to be a barrier against all emotions in my mind, even good ones. And I can't even hazard a guess about what would happen to me if this barrier would be hypothetically lifted. Cause I'm just not used to feeling things very vividly anymore.
Only with that all being said do I feel like I could say to you don't give up, and keep struggling. Whether it will be better or not is not certain. But here are some of my reasons to believe that an alternative such as closing emotions off with this barrier isn't any better than what it's trying to solve, even if they're coming from a kid.

Just wanted to mention that losing weight actually isn't always that easy. There are many factors that can lead to becoming overweight, and a person can be eating healthy, exercising, and doing all the normal recommendations but still be unable to lose weight. I do believe that becoming overweight is unhealthy, and slimming down is better, but don't assume just because someone has weight to lose that they're eating chips and chocolate all day. My sister has struggled with her weight for years in spite of eating healthy and trying to exercise regularly, and had to try nearly a dozen different weight-loss diets before finding one that a) had any effect and b) she could sustain. Her working theory is that something happened with her liver while she was in the navy.
So here's my hot take on this: we shouldn't be shaming anyone for their body type. We should be supportive of the person, and help them achieve healthy goals, but never try to shame them into changing.

5:43 Yes, more value is placed on women's appearance, but but there is higher standards for MALE attractiveness than female attrctiveness. Men have to be supermodels to be attractive, women can be curvy or skinny or fit, it doesn't matter. The difference is male attractiveness has very little value, only gay men care about attractive men.

Games are supposed to be about losing yourself in a fantasy and having fun not being yourself for a time. For instance I’m having loads of fun playing Tears of the Kingdom. Am I hylian or a man? No. Can I relate to the emotions the characters feel in this game? Yes because it’s well written and well done.

I agree. I never understood this constant need for people to "see themselves" in games and cinema. I can only speak for me, but I've never watched a show or movie or played a game because the character "looked like me" and if I have the option to create my own character, invariably I usually make an attractive female character, 'cos I like the fantasy of it. Ah, yes. Promoting disease. Daddy Nurgle approves!
Discriminating against people with health issues is wrong. Glorifying health issues is ALSO wrong. Obesity reduces life expectancy and can be crippling even before that; it's not something to be proud of, and absolutely not attracted to.
As an unathletic male, I've never seen buff heroes as something worth emulating. Rather, I find them annoying to look at, possibly because I value brain over brawns and barbarians clearly aren't good spellcasters. That said, I do care for my health and that of people around me, and when I make a self-insert character I go for an elvish look. Do I feel represented in games? Why the snuff would I want to be represented in games? I'm a boring real-life human, if I want representation I'll play Real Life!

I know in the ad it was more focused on the fact that she has more “real” proportions compared to the fictional character. (Which I find that in general ironic since I have more in common with the “fake” body only by the fact that I’m skinny but I digress). However what I keep seeing more of in female characters that really annoys me is the fact that their proportions are made to resemble men. Or that their designs just look more masculine- all in the attempt to “desexualize” said character… by making them less like a female… that’s what truly pisses me of about this whole damn movement on removing good looking female characters- it’s just yet another way of just erasing what makes us different from men. I mean the only acceptable “fit woman” in woke things is a buff masculine one, even if arguably that’s a more unrealistic body for women to conform to compared to just being thin.

I’m 24 and male, I’m not only in the gym because of these strong masculine characters but they also helped guide me to be a better person. I had amazing parents and they obviously get 90% of the credit but role models are important. Not what they look like but how they act. I’m also the kind of gamer that will spend hours making my character and a lot of the time I do want them to look like me, just more muscular, maybe slightly handsomer.
