  • Sharon’s done a lot for her dog with hemangiosarcoma. (www.dogcancer....) Now he is gagging. Is this the end? Dr. Trina Hazzah, integrative oncologist, makes her best recommendation.
Sharon calls in to our Listener Line with a question. Her corgi’s getting closer to the prognosis timeframe the surgeon predicted for his hemangiosarcoma. Now he’s gagging a few times a day.
Is this the cancer coming back, or invading his lungs? If he’s not eligible for more surgery, what can she do at home?
Dr. Trina Hazzah, integrative oncologist, helps Sharon understand what could be going on with her boy. She makes a couple of very specific recommendations that Sharon can try right away to relieve symptoms.
She also makes a referral to a veterinarian in Sharon’s area who might just be able to help.

My dog unfortunately passed from this cancer 2 weeks ago. She was so happy and her usual self, and then one day she was acting totally different. Took her to the vet and they said her gums are white and she was internally bleeding so she will need to undergo exploratory surgery to see if its hemangiosarcoma. They opened her up and saw the tumor ruptured and spread all over her internal body. The vet said they cant do anything really once it gets that bad. We had to say bye to her while she was under anesthesia. I miss her so much to this day

Just throwing this out there…….I have an 8 year old Whippet, she was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma back in October 2021 I was told she might make 6 weeks……That was not an option for me so I put my Whippet on Turkey Tail Mushroom and Fenbendazole after a month of my Daisy girl being on the Fenbendazole the Hemangiosarcoma tumors over 40 visible the size of a small blood bag and golf balls started to shrink / disappear. Now the larger golf ball size tumors are the size of Double OO buck shot getting smaller by the day.

I’ve had many dogs in my life, and most of them lived very long lives. But in recent years, I lost TWO beloved dogs to hemangiosarcoma. First was my 10 year Dutch Shepherd; she’d been off her food, and the vet treated the superficial symptoms. One night, her spleen simply ruptured. We took her to the emergency vet to be put down. A big loss. Then our dearest Yellow Lab, who loved every moment of her 13+ life, went off her food. The vet found the malignant spleen almost immediately, and it was spreading. They said they could extend her life a few months with surgery and chemo. I said, let’s just put her down peacefully right now. The vets subsequently told me that they’re seeing many more cases of hemangio. I haven’t used fertilizer or herbicide on my property in 40 years, and I use a premium brand of food.

I just lost my precious boy at only 9, so unexpected. I now look back and see there were subtle signs that I had attributed to other things. Like occasional gag, chewing his feet with nothing to be found (thought it just allergies) I just didn't know to connect the dots. In trying to find answers I saw that veterinary researchers in NC had found that there is a link to Bartonella spread by fleas in these cancers. So it could be an uncaught parasitic bacteria causing a lot of it......I don't use fertilizer or herbacides either, though so many neighbors do........I wish they made ultrasounds a standard part of regular vet check ups. He had just had his yearly by an experienced vet, been given a clean bill of health and full blood panel (for an upcoming dental) and even his abdomen palpited and nothing caught...said he looked good. Then suddenly he is bleeding to death in front of me and they are telling me his spleen is the size of a grapefruit. I am still in shock.
Also to add, we live in the south where fleas pop up every year, but we always treat for it right away so have never had any kind of infestation. I read ticks could be a transmitter too, but it's not been officially linked. Here in the woodsy south it is normal to find a tick now and then on dogs or people and we always try to stay on top of everything right away. He was a rescued puppy and spent his first months as a feral living in a cow pasture alone with cows, next to where I used to work. Nobody could get near him but me and my coworkers finallly helped me catch him. His breed was dalmation-blue heeler mix, my sweet goofy eared boy. I am shattered.
I am so sorry for everyone's devastating losses I am reading in trying to find out why this happened.

@@kaia_b I am sorry to hear this. It’s a terrible loss. It is similar to pancreatic cancer in humans; once you are diagnosed, it’s over very quickly. There were no warning signs with my Lab. She had pancreatitis many months before, recovered, and was then fine. Her death came so suddenly. There WERE warning signs with my Shepherd, but I didn’t understand. She enjoyed belly-rubs, and one day I asked my adult son, why is her whole stomach red? And then she would just find a sofa to nap, and not want to be bothered. But I only put the pieces of the puzzle together in hindsight. I had MANY dogs before them, and I’d never heard of hemangio, and none of the dogs died with those symptoms. It was just old age, and they faded out.

Lost my dog at the weekend. She went downhill as lungs filling up with fluid which was drained. Tumour in and around heart. Wanted to bring her back and do treatment myself. Vet said he couldn’t offer her palliative care as diuretics or other things but I read that diuretics do work for drainage but he said it would make her more ill, losing electrolytes etc. It was too costly for chest drain to be fitted. I am just thinking whether I could have saved her with home treatments etc. So horrible, or could it have been too late for even that

    • @DogCancer

So sorry for your loss. Please set aside your worries. It's part of grieving to think "what if" and go through all the things that you DIDN'T do and think that maybe you should have done them. It's the "bargaining" stage of grieving. But just because you are thinking those thoughts doesn't make them real or true. It sounds like you did absolutely everything you could, and then you trusted your veterinarian when they said that the palliative care wouldn't offer enough relief. Imagine if you had done those other things, and your dog still suffered? You would be just as devastated. Losing a dog is so hard, but we can tell you did everything possible. Go easy on yourself.

Currently dealing with this right now with my friend’s 10 year old dog (lowchen/lhasa apso mixed breed). Unfortunately, ultrasound shows spleen tumor and cancer already spread to liver, abdomen and surgery isn’t recommended anymore. He is on anti nausea and appetite meds and I have watched your videos and want to offer cruciferous veggies, mushrooms, etc but he would barely eat anything anymore. I want to be positive but if he isn’t anything anymore, I don’t know what can be done anymore.
