- Today we have a build for Ben Grimm, the Thing from the Fantastic Four in Dungeons & Dragons.
If you want to clobber as a member of Marvel's First Family in D&D 5e, this is the way to do it!

Canonically, Ben isn't just an astronaut, but has a master's degree in aerospace engineering. While not the genius level intellect of his best friend, Dr Doom has recognized his intelligence. Reed might have designed the ship, but Ben isn't just the pilot, he is also the mechanic who built it.
IIRC the only reason he isn't Dr.Grimm is because he couldn't afford to the extra years at collage to wright and defend his thesis or dissertation and you don't need Dr. before your name or P.H.D. after it to get a good job in Engineering

Whenever writers tell a story about Ben Grimm being away from Reed, they have a tendency to remember that no, Ben is not stupid, they don't make people astronauts if they don't have a very good understanding of science and math.
Love that you point out Ben's unshakeable willpower instead of just focusing on the clobberin, his determination is unparalleled in Marvel.
He is the Frisk Undertale of Marvel Comics
Add in how he sees Peter like a nephew, giving him another Uncle Ben, one who is unbreakable.
What about Doom and Kingpin? Those two have maxed out willpower too.
Watching all those clips from the movie made me realize something, I respect that the Thing was straight up rocking a trench coat and fedora. It’s such a silly thing from comics and cartoons to bring to a movie and it’s so fun. Now I wanna rewatch the first movie with friends
Ben Grimm is one of the few heroes who refused to take part in the civil war. Dude instead spent the time on damage control, trying to rescue people from the rubble caused by his ex-colleagues.
He's gruff, but he's also the wisest member of the FF. Ironically also the most human.
The funny thing about the low int is at least originally, in the Silver Age Ben was pretty smart with a master's degree, I believe. A lot of the time he dumbed down Reed's technobabble for other people. But I also understand using point array or point buy you can only be good at so many things, and this does reflect relatively recent media pretty well.
According to Reed, Ben held more than one university degree (I forget which issue he mentions it), so you're absolutely right. He's smarter than people give him credit for being.
Man, this build has way less shapeshifting and death by fire than I expected
I saw an awesome pitch for a modification to Ben's powers that lets him modify his mass by growing/shedding the rocks that form his exterior. It adds a lot more complexity to his abilities and also pulls them closer in line with the dynamic options from the rest of the FF.
Imagine him gathering a bunch of rocks on his fist and hurling them at someone.
Considering Ben's nearly constant use of improvised weapons (lampposts, cars etc.) I think getting tavern brawler is kind of necessary for him to be true to character.
I would also say that the whole rune/growing aspect of the rune knight doesn't really fit for him. I would have probably gone with battle master instead.
Now its not one of his common powers but in the 2015 secret wars Ben was a wall that kept out Zombies and robots

This vid made me realize just how fantastic (ha) the Thing costume in the old movies was. Sure the hands are clunky, but the face is impressively emotive, and that basis of physicality makes the animated portions much less subtly distracting then most modern CGI.

Actually in some stories, Ben Grim actually has a regulator belt (made by Reed) that allows him to transform between forms at push of a button, i think there was a time limit i forget the fine details. I assume that's a legendary magic item?
My favorite Thing thing is when they had him show up in the end of an Immortal Hulk issue... and when he did, they dropped the title. "So, here's the Thing."
Nice to see you finish the four but it would be cool if you combined all of there powers into one character and also made him a shape shifting Alien. (I'm requesting a Super Skrull build in case that wasn't obvious.)

Small thing (hehe) Cloud rune never specifies that the attacker or target of the attack have to be enemies or allies. You could stand 30ft away from a Paladin and an enemy. Have the paladin attack a teammate next to them and you redirect it
Stone rune: the enemy sits down and reconsiders their life after a quick heart to heart.

I’m guessing Earth Genasi for that rocky exterior, some fighter for unarmed fighting style and maneuvers, and totem Barb to become the shield.

Look at the time! It's build time with Sir Tulok, the one man who will bring us the fabled Tangle the lemur build one day with just as much effect as this 500 pounds of full clobbering.
Ben Grimm, is the reliable militar and pilot man who got a space-radiation burn that left his skin not itchy and red, but hard and orange! Giving him a shocking experience (face it, you would feel the same I'd your dork become rock hard for the wrong reasons) and yet after dealing with the changes he is still a man willing to get his hands dirty in order to do the right thing, it also helps that traveling all the world and space can broad up tour views of what is a monster and what is just a Thing with a love for New York pizza!
When you asked for 48 seconds, I got worried that Earth Genasi gives +2 con.
But as usual... you're right. Nothing about Ben Grimm helps him help his party move sneakier or move through rough terrain easier. Goliath is the better fit mechanically, and mechanics can't be hand waved the same way aesthetics can.
You made the stats make sense in 46 seconds. Impressive!
You could consider a warforged, because they are made of rock, wood, and stone.

@@agsilverradio2225 Earth Genasi get to move through difficult terrain and they get pass without trace at 5th level. Goliaths get to be big and tough. One of those is a lot more like The Thing than the other

The only bad part about a Barbarian/Rune Knight multiclass is that it suffers from both action economy choking (two different uses of the bonus action and neither are direct attacks) and redundancy (Extra Attack if you go over 4 levels, Strength check advantage in both Rage and Giant's Might)... it's worse if you go with Ancestral Guardian to be able to taunt enemies and take a full 6 levels for the damage reduction reaction (which then conflicts with Storm Rune) instead of just relying on runes and grappling (and maybe a Fighting Initiate / Martial Initiate feat with Goading Attack) for holding threat (I know there is no "threat" mechanic in D&D but MMO gamers should know what I mean). That said, a Rune Knight with a Rogue dip and finesse weapon is deadly...
Please do colossus from Xmen I think making the fast ball special a part of his kit would be great
Honestly, I dont blame you for skipping the max barbarian build, its been done with a number of characters before so I always enjoy the more interesting methods of reaching the end goal you find. I mean, for some its just TOO perfect to avoid doing a full 20 level dip in a single class like beastboy and his circle of the moon druid, but the more complicated builds are fun. And sometimes I enjoy the builds that wouldnt work well in an actual game but is just fun because Hey! Thats scarecrow you built! No, not crane, the wizard of oz scarecrow! :p

His Intelligence and Charisma should definitely be swapped IMO, The Thing has multiple advanced degrees, or at least used to, and yeah he was an astronaut BEFORE he met Reed Richards too, you have to be pretty smart to get into one of those. Looking like Ben does well for intimidation, but Ben is known for his gruff and cantankerous demeanor until you get to know him

Rune Knight is an interesting choice. As you say, the flavor of the class really doesn't fit, and Totem doesn't either. But I can't argue with the results.
Ben not known for his Rage, so im not sure what classes id guess. Maybe he has some Monk Levels? I dont think Blue Shorts count as armor.... his skin does. Maybe Warlock... if count space radiation as a patron?

Hey Tulok, this is going to sound absolutely nuts, but would it be possible to go for say... Zack Fair (ff7 crisis core) or Reinhardt (overwatch)? Would love to see either of those in the future.
He already did a Cloud build . So I mean Zack isn't going to be much different since they both used the Buster Sword and have more or less the same abilities.

I'd think he's a Paladin of Conquest and since he's an alien you can probably call him an Aasimar. You might even also call him a GOO-lock with The Supreme Intelligence as a patron. Overall he's probably mostly a smitey alien boy

I would have thought that Earth Genasi would have been a better fit, but Ben doesn't do magic, and an Earth Genasi gets some spells as a racial ability, so I can understand why you decided to go with the Goliath.
Speaking of characters that seem like they fit a build or not, you should really check out Dave the Barbarian and see how you can build those characters; Dave might seem like the most strait forward, seeing as he is canonically referred to as a Barbarian in the D&D sense, but Int is not his dump stat, that would be Cha, amusingly enough, when your own family members call you a dork and your entire kingdom knows you more by the accidents you've had being a hero then you know Charisma is going to be one of your lower stats, especially when you start calling random birds and animals with surprisingly good rolls only for them to immediately attack your head when they land on your arm (yes, that really happened in one episode); Dave also dated an evil princess and still thought she was nice after she tried to destroy the kingdom he's supposed to protect because she said he was sweet for all the terrible poetry he wrote and yelled at the swarm of fey she was using to try and destroy the kingdom (once again, that happened in one episode).
So yeah, go check out Dave the Barbarian; it's probably one of the most D&D shows you will ever see, even when you include streams of people playing D&D. Also, the big bad is a literal talking pig that is apparently a Sorcerer or Wizard voiced by the guy who voices Zim from Invader Zim and Moxie from Helluva Boss; and his name is absolutely great, "The Dark Lord Chuckles the Silly Piggy," and yes, that is his full canonical name.

Great video tho gotta be a lil stinker and mention that rune knights runecarver feature require it to be carved on a peice of armor of jewelery and the thing lies within the "scantily clad behemoth" category of Marvel supes.

Day 18 of asking for How to Play Buster Scruggs in D&D.
The Thing is 5' 9" hes short.
swap CHA and INT, he was an engineer. Feels like you picked goliath to annoy your audience for another clear candidate for earth genasi. Other than the term 'stones endurance' goliath doesn't suit or make any more sense than any other race.
The Intelligence is WAY too low. Ben's not in Reed's league, but he's no dummy, either. In comics, he downplays his intelligence but he holds a couple of Bachelor's degrees. Additionally, in order to qualify to be a test pilot, he'd need to hold at least one Bachelor's degree in Physics, Math, or Engineering.
