I finally get what hes trying to say,the final scene is kinda like a still painting .You have Tony with his family (the absolute core dynamic of the show). What surrounded him were a multitude of threats - he couldve been shot by the memebers only guy , the indictments etc. it didnt matter ... proper conventional closure would have been extremely difficult to accomplish on a show of this wide open scale .. and so to think of it as a final 'still image' brings it all into perspective.

Probably the most incredible scene i have ever scene... every single shot had meaning... and of coarse going back and forth between tony's pov... it was a show about tony soprano... a journey we all took with him from the beginning... and you realize the reason why it's so shocking is that david chase put us in tony's pov right when he got killed instantly.... we were all tony soprano at the end...ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ENDING!!!

The director said its more about time . Sopranos is about tony have an allotted time being in that lifestyle . The abrupt ending shows the audience how fragile time is

I would think this video would give you pretty much the best reasons for why the ending happened as it did, because it sure as hell did for me.
The Sopranos no matter how much criticism it gets will still always be the show that changed the landscape of TV more than anything else out there. Why else do you think the final scene is talked about so much even today?

I agree with this assessment. Basically we, the audience, got whacked because there was no more Sopranos.
Listen the the lyrics of "Don't stop Believing". It says it all. "Some will win, some will lose, Some were born to sing the blues. Oh the movie never ends. It goes on and on and on and on." Here is the beauty of it though. Chase puts in all these red herrings like the guy in Member's only jacket going to the bathroom. Meadow parking successfully the third time.
Remember what Tony and Bobby were talking about at the beginning of the season. What is it like when you get whacked? "You probably never hear it when it happens."

I didnt like it to begin with, felt a bit robbed somehow? But after a while im totally happy with it. YOU get to decide what happened next in your own head. Being a Sopranos fanatic, i feel like i actully know the characters, so it feels good to decide Tonys fate myself!

I didn't really have an opinion of how it ended and it actually took me a while to realize what happened just because of how subtle it was. Bobby: I bet you don't even hear it when it happens. When Jerry...Tormachio? gets whacked in front of Silvio, how its silent. Silvio then says how he didn't hear it at first. Then Tony remembers that moment in the 2nd to last episode with Bobby.

Personally when i first watched the finale i like a lot of people thought something was wrong with my t.v in the end I think It was a great ending. I mean what did you want 2 see Tony get shot and killed. We all loved Tony all the way through you don't want 2 see that. So yea loved it and loved show it's my favourite of all time

but the whole point of the Sopranos ending is that nothing can happen after it. having a season finale cut to black like that, then come back for another season, would be pointless. and The Wire is a very different show, with many more moving parts and no real absolute core of the series, the way Sopranos had Tony. ending on a cut to black from Tony's face makes perfect sense for Sopranos. but Wire had a lot of characters of equal importance, they all had to be addressed.

I would've rather seen Tony look up to see the Feds cut Meadow off at the door and come pouring in.

Nothing happened. Tony did NOT die. There was no gun against his head. And there's NO way were seeing this thru Tony's eyes, because if we were wouldn't being seeing Tony
