    I primarily feed the birds from the first snow to the last. I let them go natural from mid-spring to Halloween. I live in a rural area so I want to let them feed on all the natural elements.

    Most uploads feature country gardens where birds are plentiful. Try attracting more than pigeons and magpies in an area where there's lots of neighbours who also put out lots of food. I have many feeders 2 large tables and 2 lots of fresh water and a huge mix of seed and mealworms, fat balls and suet pellets plus food wastage which never run dry and for years all i've really attracted -few exceptions - is larger birds and starlings that swoop down and hoover up most of what's out. I've tried cages that are supposed to stop the larger birds that only the small ones can access and nothing gets touched.

    Lovley and helpful. I wondered about meal worms, I will research buying them at a good price. My main issue now is the spilled seed on the ground, which attracted a rat. I humanely trapped it, gave it a nice country home. But, one showed up and is living under my garden shed. ugh. So I'm thinking this could be a continuing issue. I live in N.C. in the south of the U.S. Learning my bird species now. Thanks, you really helped !!! BYW : I love the UK and the people there !!

    How do your feeders do that close to the trees with squirrels? I can't hang any feeders (not even my "squirrel busters" which are meant to keep squirrels out) on the trees except my finch feeder because the rest get ravaged.. The squirrels mangled my old peanut feeder like yours, they chewed right through the wire :O

    • @wildlifegardenproject
      @wildlifegardenproject  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Jasmine, yep it can be a constant battle! Try a few feeders positioned in different places, and maybe try a variety of anti-squirrel bird feeders. There are lots around, but squirrels are very clever and you may just have to put up with the cheeky things!

    • @jsladen1
      @jsladen1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wildlifegardenproject Squirrels are very cheeky and will either destroy those feeders or knock them to the ground where they'll eat everything before the birds have a chance. A great option would be to mount the feeders on poles with baffles.

  • @hobouk3871
    @hobouk3871 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    We need more people to lose there paved areas and start to bring back there gardens again. You dont have to have a grassy area if you cant take care of a lawn, you can just have borders with slow growing bushes and tree varieties in them. You can then hang up some bird feeders in the trees or put a bird table in your garden and hang some bird feeders off them. Or if you cant replace your paved area get some large containers and have some potted bushes and slow growing trees in your yard or drive. Bringing back the old british garden also has alot of benefits to the environment aswell as wildlife and can reduce the risk of flooding.

    I hate to say it but not one of those feeders with plastic openings would last a week if you have squirrels in the vicinity. Plastic gets chewed through quite easily as I have found out. I managed to find all metal edged feeders with clear Perspex and the squirrel hasn't got in them yet....yet but they've hanging been up for six months without squirrel damage so they should be ok !!
    I try to put nuts out freely for the squirrel to take but I still see him/her hanging off the fat block holder...little bugger !
    Great video though, thank you 👍🏻

    It might not hurt, if you have issues with squirrels at your feeders, that you could feed them as well. Peanuts, corn, sunflower kernels, as well as some pieces of bread might keep them from destroying your bird feeders.

    • @Mister_H.
      @Mister_H. 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Bailey I feed the squirrels in my garden by leaving nuts out freely on the fence posts, washing line post, etc but they still love hanging off the fat block holders and have a munch. Little sods, still love 'em though !

  • @barbaragregory2143

    Love birds, but allways remember you are feeding RATS as well

    • @wrestlingfan4ever76
      @wrestlingfan4ever76 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's way to both combat and prevent that. One example is you can just put out enough birds seed out that they can eat in one morning so it isn't sitting around. Roof/black rats can often climb onto feeders but you can add squirrel baffles and guards. For the rats that still come into your yard you can use both Snap traps and liv-catch trams and then drown them. The quickest and often easiest thing to do is just shoot the rats with a pellet gun.

    What is your procedure for keeping your bird feeder table clean?

    • @LauraTurnerNutkins
      @LauraTurnerNutkins 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's important to remove food that hasn't been eaten, so use a stiff brush to clear old food away before you put new food out. You can then give it a more thorough clean with mild disinfectant fortnightly or monthly depending on how much use it gets (and therefore how mucky it gets!), and rinse it thoroughly. It's also a good idea to clear the food away from underneath and move the table regularly to stop the build up of old food and droppings. Hope that helps!

  • @squito94
    @squito94 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Instead of setting up unsustainable feeders they you have to keep buying seed for you should grow plants that are native to your area because they support the most insects and have many different species of natives that provide food year round. Oak species support the most caterpillars which are what most terrestrial birds feed their young. Support the caterpillars and you'll get more birds.

    • @wildlifegardenproject
      @wildlifegardenproject  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, it's important to grow plants to provide food and shelter for all kinds of creatures, including as you say for the invertebrates that become food for birds themselves. Providing extra food can help birds through tough times in any garden, but especially in smaller gardens which don't have the space for a huge variety of plants and trees, feeders can be a lifeline for birds.

    if anyone has bother like me with squirrels try crushing up old medicine the different types the better I find crushing it into powder and mix it up with lard and nuts and hang it on the trees .I don't know if it is strong enough to kill them but it really puts them off ballance, I once seen seen a squirrel with an old glow stick and it looked like it was having a bit of a rave, it was hilarious.

    • @chrishieke1261
      @chrishieke1261 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hope this isn't a serious proposition ... . Apart from legal and moral counterpoints, it is highly likely that birds would feed on this poisonous thing too. Just live with the squirrels and protect the bird feeders with solid cages.

    • @Mister_H.
      @Mister_H. 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      King Kong just use/buy metal edged seed holders. Poisons of any kind do not discriminate and will kill/harm anything that touches it. Please use your head and buy squirrel proof feeders, they do exist 👍🏻

    • @Rudy-S
      @Rudy-S 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What your suggesting genius is both cruel and illegal. If your bored and seeking entertainment try sticking your tongue in an electrical outlet and hold a glow stick at the same time. If someone knows this idiot please report them for animal cruelty. Drugging defenseless animals is cruel and not cool.
