THE most outstanding Rockpalast-Nacht of all. Sitting as a 15year old in front of the familiar TV-set alone at 3 a.m. as John Cale enters the stage to play for a misunderstanding and tired audience, that was great art (especially the carpet number under his keyboards while performing "heartbreak hotel"---I`ll always remember these initial memories). One of the best concerts - ever! How nice of you to publish those outstanding clips from Rockpalast. It's one of the most intense concerts. If you like this, buy the cd "John Cale Comes " and the cd "Caribbean Sunset" A pity that the soundquality isn't a little better. Cheers
Recorded at Grugahalle, Essen on October 13th 1984 for Rockpalast. John Cale - guitar, piano, vocals Dave Young - guitar, vocals Andy Heermans - bass, vocals Dave Lichtenstein - drums
Thanks for posting this video. I saw Cale during this period in Washington DC (Cellar Door, Bayou). He had Nico with him at the Bayou venue, it was great.
this man has a created of a world i want to live in, i dont really like the worlds others tried to put me in at all. i call him father every time we meet. could happen more often.
You know, back in 1981, if you wanted to enter the Kremlin as a sightseer/tourist, you entered through a back door (a gate in the wall that was not on the front/Red Square side). I went through the back door, and I did in fact say, "Owdy owdy doo dah, Doo dah ay." I'd only heard this song for the first time very recently back then.
Dunno about that, there where plenty of great artists/bands around in the 80´s, eg Jeffrey Lee Pierce with his Gun Club, Hüsker Dü - Godfathers of Grunge, Steve Albini´s Big Black and Rapeman, John Lydon´s PIL, electronic pioneers Cabaret Voltaire, Iggy, The Stranglers, The Fall and Siouxsie were still around, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Bauhaus, Fad Gadget, Gang Of Four, The Cassandra Complex, Violent Femmes, Residents, Alan Vega, Echo & The Bunnymen, JAMC, James Blood Ulmer, Linton Kwesi Johnson etc. I definitely would not want to miss out on that decade, and especially those amazing gigs I went to.
John's is the sordid truth of the past 60 years of both USA & USSR, and worse , of the KULTURKAMPF where soulless transglobal Capital- Philistines are winning, all put to some of the best music of the past 60 years.
Got this in late 80's on VHS , couldn't visit Der Fatherland then , I was erm......waiting for my papers back , had to watch it second hand , bloody good music , I was and still am jealous of Dieter and Rose in the second row . Must get the drinks.....
Those guys are seriously the oddest group of musicians performing together on stage. You'd be scared as hell if they walked into your house somewhere in the Congo or Sudan. It would make quite a good short film.

Ready for war, ready for war You better be ready for war Ready for war, ready for war Are you ready for war Ready for war, ready for war
Not sure about this period of John Cale. He was torn between No Wave and vintage hard rock. Seems he couldn’t make up his mind where to go with his music. He’d obviously struggled with his songwriting between Island trilogy and Songs For Drella.

In the 80's, Cale kept me sane musically because there was so much crap about!

Another great find. I dearly wish there was a video of "Baby You Know" from the same era.
Great performance.

Does anyone know the chords for this song?
Love this song & John Cale.. BUT.. I don't think that I have even seen less enthusiastic back up musicians.
I think that was an intentional “New Wave” affect. Think Gary Neman, Talking Heads, Cars
Does anybody know the guitarist is? He looks familiar..
my rifle is my friend 0\o/0
Lets go lets go lets go to Moscow. Wet dream. NO PASARAN 💪
