Dionne really brought that gospel fire to this performance! We are so used to soft, sweet easy listening Dionne that she had to take it home to remind us where she honed and practiced that beautiful gift. They are a family of talented jewels.

She started in Gospel, are some great recordings of her with her famous aunts/uncles/mom (Drinkard Sisters) singing. Her first group was Gospel group with her sister and friend. Her grandfather was an AME pastor and she grew up singing in the church from very young age. She also did Gospel on her national TV show specials, many now on YT.
Agree with folks earlier: we have grown so accustomed to screaming, rifts, and hollering, I cannot believe folks did not think Dionne Warwick could sing -- until this video. And you wonder why we have so much trash on the radios?
I completely agree, They started to overuse those ways of song in the late 90s/early 00s and it has gotten worse over time. I'm not say I don't want them in music. It's just the singers need to know where and when to use them. Some don't even have a good technique to use them and they are ruining their voices.

what I notice here, is her 'extra gear'....and its born out of, gospel being the core of her approach to singing. And its fascinating to see, because this approach cant be faked. If she did, the audience would sense it IMMEDIATELY, and there would be very little applause. But the heart and soul of a REAL singer, will always take over, when they sing something as emotional as gospel. Thats why the Patti LaBelles and Aretha Franklins and Dionne and Gladys, are so special. Because its actually not an easy thing to do, to go from the structure of singing popular music, to the raw emotion of gospel. Singing gospel the way its supposed to be sung, calls for the singer to be spiritually invested. Now, I understand why Aretha Franklin felt a certain way about Miss Dionne, because had she came out the gate in the early 60's doing this style of singing in the Pop/ R &B/ Soul genres, the competition would've been on for the both of them. Aretha would've been very vigilant!
But, I think it's great that they have found their own lanes. To think they were both the most charted and influencial artists of their time in gospel and pop arenas.
It's just a "gospelized" cover of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' "Up Where We Belong". Just look up the lyrics to that and substitute the word "Lord" whenever "Love" is said in the chorus.
Is that young thin girl in the back to Dionne's right Whitney? It sure looks like it could be her. The one in the all white skit suit i am talking about.
no this looks like the mid to late 80's after or around the time Whitney became famous in her own right. I'm sure she was too busy with her career at this point
That young lady is Dionne and Whitney's first cousin Felicia Moss. Her mother is the choir director, Anne Drinkard Moss....the sister of Cissy and Lee Warrick and Dionne and Whitney's aunt.
You need to have your ears cleaned cause Ms Warwick was never a “bland” singer. Restrained , technical, stylish- yes but never a bland singer. She did not need to prove anything by screeching because she knew she was a badass and can deliver. Her tone, range, musical intuition/knowledge speaks for itself.
I had no idea she can blow like that's cus her records are pop and don't show her gift at all but gospel is where she got singing from and now I see she's anointed and can blow she had did r n b instead of pop them we would have none
you mean "would have known".....i've always known she could blow. And i'm glad she did a different style of music because everyone tries to lump black singers together.....i love her 60s music,it set her apart from everyone else.
People do try to lump black singers together.. But i must say that DIonne's Family has done a lot in showing the world the different highs and lows of the female voice... From Donnne's smooth style, to De De & Cissy's fiery voices & whitney was truly a combination of both.. Great vid.. The Drinkard family never ceases to amaze me
No thanks . I’m glad did what she did cause she broke barriers and paved the way for many artists who came after her. She followed her heart and did not allow herself to be pigeonholed and confined to the standards of the late 50s/ early 60s . She was a pioneer and should be held in great respect and high esteem being one of the very first pop/ crossover artists. No one could have interpreted Bacharach/ David’s repertoire the way that Ms Warwick did. She was unique and almost peerless (in the 60s pop scene)

So it wasnt enough to solo. She had to turn around and atart directing the choir too😂
Amd whek she was done she got out the way. Took her seat om the pew and let the choir director wrap it up😂😂
Now, I understand why Aretha Franklin felt a certain way about Miss Dionne, because had she came out the gate in the early 60's doing this style of singing in the Pop/ R &B/ Soul genres, the competition would've been on for the both of them. Aretha would've been very vigilant!
But, I think it's great that they have found their own lanes. To think they were both the most charted and influencial artists of their time in gospel and pop arenas.
That's just the Lord's hand!!
I'm guessing this is the early 90's?
Someome please call BURT BACHARACH
what song is this & did dionne actually do this song?
+K Tookes - Up Where We Belong. It was a big hit Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warren in 80's.
@@kklustra Thank you! No one named the song until you!
What is the name of this song??
Up Where We Belong!
Does anybody know what year this was?
What song was she singing.
It was pop song many turned into a gospel song " Lord ( love) Lift us Up" from them of " an Officer and Gentlemen"....
Do anyone know the lyrics to this song?
It's just a "gospelized" cover of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' "Up Where We Belong". Just look up the lyrics to that and substitute the word "Lord" whenever "Love" is said in the chorus.
He is playing reggae organ not even in good Jackie Mittoo style either. But Dionne and the choir were a delight!
Were Whitney on the choir at that time?
No, around this time I believe was 84-86. Whitney most likely in the 70's and early 80's.
@PaulRiddleJr yea... its a great song.../watch?v=CFYtpTot7hQ
I've NEVER seen Dionne sing like this, I knew she was from the CHURCH, but she sings very BLAND usually. She took you straight back to church here !
You will have to pull up her Gospel videos here on TH-cam.
She was unique and almost peerless (in the 60s pop scene)
what is up with the stink face at 0:13?
she tired,,,back in the day,,yes. maybe
just disrespectful smh.
