RESTORING A RUSTY DOUBLE BLADED AXE!

- My friends and I love restoring old, rusty tools that collect dust in workshops or sell at vintage or antique sales. We decided to launch a TH-cam channel doing just that!
For our very first video, we’re restoring a rusty double bladed Keen Kutter axe. The handle broke years ago while chopping wood and the axe head has been collecting rust in the corner of our garage.
Time to RESTORE THE AXE!
Our process was pretty straight forward…
We dissolved the axe head rust in Metal Rescue Rust Removal Bath for 6 hours. While waiting for the Metal Rescue to work its magic, we found a large branch that came down in a storm and began to turn it into the axe handle. We crudely squared the branch with a reciprocating saw and then further refined it with a wood planner. We then roughly shaped the wood into a handle with a band saw and belt sander. To finish it off we hand sanded it to 220 grit.
A few hours later, we removed the axe head from the Metal Rescue solution and cleaned it up with a wire brush. We then took an angle grinder with a flap disk to the axe head to further clean and polish it. After that, we moved to the belt sander to work on the cutting edges. We hand sanded the axe head to 2000 grit and then buffed and polished it. The axe head cutting edges were further sharpened with sharpening stones from Sharp Pebble. After a few hours, the axe head was sharp enough to cut through paper and shiny enough to use as a mirror.
All that was left was to attach the axe head to the handle. We shaped the handle head to fit the axe head opening and then split it using the band saw. We hammered in our splint and glued it for extra strength. Final step was to apply a few coats of Watco Danish Oil.
About 8 hours of work and our axe was ready to split wood. We absolutely love the look and feel of the axe handle and polished axe head.
This axe restoration project was a ton of fun and we’re really excited to create more videos just like this one. So please, share this video and subscribe to our channel for more weekly, awesome content from the Rust Rangers!

Awesome job. If you run your boards through the whole planer and not just the center, your blades will wear much more evenly.
When you hang an axe I’m pretty sure that you are supposed to beat it on a little and pick it up and beat it on by the bottom of the handle. It will help it go down on the handle better.
Gimli will be proud of you
Me again.. beautiful, piece of art. Can't imagine all what you've. Done in the past. Lt8r!
I like the mentality of restoring Things instead of just buying new ones.
Cause he want designed
Absolutely astounding.. wonderful restoration to watch
just AMAZING!
never seen anything better than that my congratulations bro very good
I never knew cutting wood and polishing metal could be so satisfying 😂🤤
Yea. I need this for my art n crafts project
I like a big sharp axe I cannot lie, my brothers in the woods will not deny, with a swing and a whirl the chips do fly, I like a big sharp axe I cannot lie.

Imagine how scared the trees are when they see their dead relative being the handle of an axe

@@smudged4090 how is it like that??
@@smudged4090 no how is it like a head as a bowling ball

Well they have no worries. The way he fitted that handle it will probably only last a swing or two. Lol
Olağanüstü güzel oldu.. İyi bir Ustasın.
Verry good. I know the problem. People throw nowadays forged things away because they're rusty and old. Allthow this axe was just drop forged by machines it isn't right! Forged things can live for centuries! And, with a little work, here it comes back again. To a next live. I'm a hobby blacksmith and thank you verry much for honoring our work!!!!! It's not easy to forge a double bladed by the way!
If your going to use the little steel hammer to drive that wedge, you should cover the end of the wedge with a small block of hardwood to transfer the impact force along the entire wedge.. final product looks beautiful ...
I always play those videos when Im going to bed.

Lol i started doing that a few days ago🤣

It's almost like you didn't want us to see the manufacturer's name on the side of the ax. I've changed out lots of handles in my time (since the 1960's) and never found glue necessary. It's an interesting touch, though, I admit. My father was a blacksmith, and he made a tool shaped like the handle opening at the top of the ax head for driving out the old wood. I still have and use it. Also, your handle is a work of art. Beautifully done!! I'm so glad to see the old axes cared for, like my great-grandfathers two Kelly "Registered" faller's axes, which I still use. Great work, young man.
Sehr schön geworden 👍👍👍👍
Absolutely badass, that's straight up a work of art... I want one.
Just refit the handle. That was atrocious.
David Suppa agreed
Beautiful work. It will be interesting to see if that spalted handle holds up to some hard use especially being so close the heartwood. Keep up the good work!
That spalted handle was sooo not the same piece of wood he started with lol
Very nice man
Very impressed! Thank you for a great tutorial.
I wasn't sure if that axe head would make it back to use! Haha. Amazing results.
If it's on youtube, It's likely to have worked, unless it says fail on it or something hehe

Thor felt emotional seeing this video. You made him proud.
Thor used a hammer, marvel got it wrong with the axe
SID Minotaur Thor had a hammer in marvel at first before he ever had an axe. His hammer bore the same as the mythology hammer: mjölnir . But they added some other weapons for him later on to contribute to some plot stuff.
Nice job
You are a work of art and god you restored an axe that many people would just leave it to the trash you are giving the axe more history GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!

Stunning. You have skills.
I like the fact that you took the time to create your own handle for the axe.
I wish I had that dewalt tool you used to make it. I hate buying a handle.
You did a good job restoring the axe as well. It looks beautiful. Well done

Amazing job , handle is so beautiful , subscribed!
The handle is spalted. It´s actually a result of a fungus growing in the wood.
i really love this style of music tho

Well done
While this ran, I drove over to Lowe's and bought a brand new one for about $30. Saved something like $2,200 in shop equipment... but missed out on a good way to spend a couple of days alone! :-)

crazy how they take a log and turn that into a handle i havent seen that before. I see alot of guys grab a handle from a store but this took some work!

I bet he's annoyed about that gap between the top of the handle and the blade.
i noticed that as well. great restoration but seemed to shortcut at the end. there is also a good reason that there is a tight fit there, and it is not just aesthetics.
El Hacha de doble filo, quedo mucho mejor que cuándo fue nueva, Excelente trabajo!! ☆☆☆☆☆☆

My mum would be all over that rusty double bladed axe head
Is that hickory, what are you rubbing on it I use linseed oil. Never get blisters
Danish Oil
Watco Danish Oil
Wonderful stuff, boiled linseed oil is. I even mix it into paint for the house... Paint jobs last forever.
The handle rub was made from my great grandparents
Not hickory.
Maybe cherry or other fruit tree.
Motor oil at $10/gallon works great for wood finish.
Even used oil is ok outside.
From piece of junk, to work of art. Nicely done!
Wow amazing sir
Love how the head came out. One question. Why didn't you seat the head on the shoulder of the handle? It looked like you could have seated it better.
890mikes seen that too
It’s more of an aesthetic restoration to my eye. I’d would have chosen a stronger harder wood for handle instead of a splatted cherry. Sanding the axe head without cooling it is also suspect. And finally I’d have chosen to polish off less of the axe surface.
4:30 Omae wa mou shindeiru
4:40 it’s over 9000!!!!!!
Beautiful axe, but when you hang an axe head you set it on the handle, then hammer from the bottom of the handle.while holding the axe with the head down. Also, leave a little more handle above the eye of the axe and only cut the kerf for the wedge 2/3's of the way down. It gives less chance of splitting. Overall though, good looking axe
Thank you and execellant notes in the discription.
