Two men initially clash at a local recycling center, but eventually find common ground. But this initial bond frays all too easily, leading to a bitter moment of reckoning. The plot and premise of this short drama is compact and highly specific, taking place at a recycling center on a single snowy day.
But within that scope, director Spencer Gillis is able to tease out a powerful portrait of just how human interactions are shaped by the assumptions, judgments and implications created by beliefs and anxieties about race and class.
Terrific performances and excellent direction bring to life an intelligent, nuanced screenplay, which is alive to the ways fatherhood can become an instant bond for two men of different backgrounds.
Yet this human connection begins -- and eventually ends -- with tension and conflict, which provokes honest yet uncomfortable discussion about race and racism and the subtle yet insidious ways they inform our everyday interactions and, more importantly, inaction. The film's ending moments are subtle yet heartbreaking, especially with the well-played final line, with all its irony and bitterness.
Through straightforward honesty and compassion, this powerful drama aims to open up a space of examination and scrutiny. Through provoking understanding and compassion of multiple points-of-view, films like SWEEP ask us to look within ourselves for pockets of hidden resentments and assumptions -- which can bubble up when we least expect it.

The first guy borrowed is sweeping brush and the other guy smoked most of his weed and he got a little bit of juice I'd say he was better to them

@@tinhead9246 you missed the point here, the white man was stressed under pressure from the disappointing conversation that he had through the phone call. Than getting there doing his work a black guy distract him from being so stress by asking for a broom and smoke. The amount of smoke and a broom can never repay the spiritual strenght to pull someone out from being in a dark moment and bring joy in him no amount of money can buy that moment. Kindness they were being kind to him. If you notice he offer to pay him enough to buy himself a double joint. But he was smart enough not to take that money from him,he realised the point. Even though at the end he didn't stood up for them. That won't change the kindness they have. It's a gift in disguise for him. But than it's hard to realise that if you focus on material values. Sad
p. k. How could he “stand up for them?” By saying they were not smoking weed? Or saying that yes, one guy did smoke weed because he smoked weed with him and end up getting busted too? Or that no one smoked weed but how would he know that if he was busy. Had the guy originally not borrowed the broom, asked to get high and engaged him in conversation, none of it would have happened. Take away the color of the skin factor. It had nothing to do with that.

Without involving himself than,which i would if it was me after i spent some time with a person.Either in trouble or whatever,i cannnot deny that just to protect myself from trouble. In this case the cop had a respect for him cause he was "white" so he could let this innocent guy's go. That's was my point on that!

The first time I smoked pot was at a party in Boulder, Colorado with an off duty police officer. It makes sense that they'd legalize it there because it was everywhere, I mean 80% of people had weed on them and you can't arrest 80% of the population.
They quickly had to enroll me in school because it dawned on them I was now 6yo. We lived in a great campground in the foothills. Beautiful place to grow up! I went to CU years later and it was a good decision

Is there a problem? The guys won't get arrested because they don't have weed on them, right? They weren't doing anything besides (maybe) tresspassing. What's the issue? Was he wrong to leave? How did his leaving adversely affect the others? I'm not seeing where the one guy could have made a difference.
Just by explaining that he had brought the weed, and that the other guy had brought the orange juice. For one, the joint was planned, for the other, it was unplanned and happened by chance.
i remember my white friend doing this to me but we were not smoking he broke the neighbors window and he said it was me and i got banned playing with the white kids

This was so beautifully complex. It tells a story of our humanity reaching for harmony. And while we have a long way to go, fifty years ago, the actors in this short would not have been in the same place in their hearts for each other AT ALL. In all likelihood, whitey would have been the boss and underpaid his two hirelings. The policeman would not have existed.
That's okay. I wasn't racist either until about 10 years old when it was crammed down my throat.

i remember the first time i got high. me and some mates hanging around a campfire and then my mates dad who was a cop at the time, we all passed the joint around in a circle, even the cop smoked a lot. he didn't care, he openly smokes. here in Australia, recently there have been talks to the legalization and at this point with how many people smoke or want to try... you might as well make it legal.

Of course, he thought only of himself hence, my warning. This is so believable. A very well made film about a dark facet of human existence. Though it was biased of the cops to assume the white dude didn't smoke, he wasn't with the black guys when the police first arrived. okay the idea is good, but the delivery was not really believable...like the guy just leaving without acknowledging and denying is ok, but there would have been more drama with a confrontation and open denial. but the cop wasn't believable, but yeah o.k. i get it i just think it could have been a bit better written. omeleto sets the standards insanely high, so don't blame me.

TBH the cop approached the guys to contract with them. They answered the Q's the cop asked which they are not obliged to do. The cop stated he saw them climbing the hill. The response should have been "got any evidence for that?" At that point of them admitting through acquiescence aka silence that they had dope on them there was no point the other guy saying anything...

The white man was uneasy at first with the Black men and then the police man who was Black also, stereotyping them as drug dealers and letting the white man go . If the officer got a call saying they were on a spot that they shouldn't have been then the call would have started it was 3 ppl not just two and the race of all of them .
