  • I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Thanks for watching.

Props for you to keep trying to find the other opening. I tried to unclog my first culvert here over the weekend and it was harder than it looks. I thought I knew where the pipe was but I just couldn't see it. I moved a ton of small stones that had slid down the embankment but never found the opening. Oh well - I will try again some day!

    My armchair advice:
Go to the exiting end of the pipe and move back far enough so that you can look into it like into a tunnel. Align yourself so that you can look precisely straight down the pipe. Then find a landmark right above that line on the other side. That should allow you to site the pipe on at least one axis. Like looking down the sights on the barrel of a gun to tell what the target is.

Post10 You need to make a "water scope". Take a PVC pipe maybe 2ft by 2 inch,, the wider the better. Cap one end with clear plastic, and then you can use this to look underwater. It should make finding some of these pipes much easier.

  • @SlickBubbles

When you've set up camera 2, from the downstream end of the culvert, line up a point above the upstream end, so you don't have to be digging left and right but only out from the road, to find the blocked end. It will save you time and effort on these hidden culvert ends. Looking at the angle of the culvert (inside) compared to the road surface, should also give you an idea of how high or low the end is from the surface of the road.

You need some big firecrackers and a chunk of plywood. Toss the lighted firecracker as far up pipe as you can then tightly hold plywood against exposed pipe end. With cam 2 on the buried end, you will find the covered end easily.

The rake is great for leaves and branches and all, but wouldnt silt and mud be easier worked with a shovel? hefty steel shovel could help a lot. Also... a steel... whaddya call it in english... an iron/steel bar, breaker bar, digging bar? meant to make small holes in earth and to use as a leverage tool to move rocks. usually about 1,5-2 meters in length and a tapered end you hit with and get under rocks etc.
