    This isn't something I'd thought about in response to global warming but social resilience and communities are so important. This message should be broadcast far and wide.

    More than 700 people died in the '95 Chicago heatwave because the mayor was on vacation, and no one else was prepared to make an emergency decision on his behalf.
    That's infuriating!
    Currently, I work in IT providing support for varied entities including corporations and U.S. cities. One of the most common and completely avoidable problems we have is people's managers being unavailable to provide authorization for security protocols. If anyone reading this is in position to manage anything of importance, *BE AVAILABLE!* And if you truly can't make yourself available, make sure that there are always backup options for people to make emergency decisions in your absence.

    Hey guys! This video had an incredibly deep impact on me, much bigger than if you just stated what is about to happen because of the climate change. The thing that you did differently is just assume the climate will change, and talk about how life *will* be in the future. Well that was incredibly effective. Now I feel like I realize for the first time that our future will be different than our present. It made things a lot more real.

    One of the best ways to both prepare for disasters *AND* build social ties is to join your local area's "CERT" - Community Emergency Response Team. Most cities have them, set up through their local Bureau of Emergency Management (or similar.) You get training for how to handle whatever disaster is probable in your area, and it helps build relationships with your neighbors.

  • @CharlesBosse
    @CharlesBosse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    When I lived in Boston, in the mostly black neighborhood of Roxbury, there was a stark difference between the community of the long term residents and the 'community' in low income housing. The older owners and long term renters were both friendly and involved with each other and accross wide backgrounds. Low income housing reaidents, however, came in on a lottery system without regard to their previous community (so long as they were in the catchment area) and there was little or no effort to give them a stake in their new community. In addition, because people were just thrown together, there was little chance or motivation to overcome bias, build community, or even just keep their living areas clean.
    Affordable housing is necessary, but it needs to come with strong motivation to develop agency and community. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how much money goes into it, the people in these communities will struggle alone to overcome problems that need a community or live in isolated squalor.

    I would hope so! Resilience on the social level is very important. It seems that it’s too often that infrastructure resilience is the only think cities and governments focus on. Fostering that social network is key for crisis management.

    Greensburg, KS is another great example of a community coming together to rebuild after a disaster. They built their town better than what it was before, improving the standards for buildings (striving for LEED for all structures), as well as eliminating any deemed not necessary. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call to see what works and what doesn't. And in these cases, it's the layout of the citys and towns. Denser, well-planned out cities that focus on pedestrians first (as well as mass transit) = more interaction with your neighbors

    • @NotHPotter
      @NotHPotter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wesley Morgan I think you're on to something crucial that is missing from modern life. While religion has been responsible for some tragedies, it also creates community, and that benefit shouldn't simply be dismissed.

    • @socks6881
      @socks6881 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      i think it has less to do with religion specifically and more to do with a unifying aspect in the community, that has its own spaces, along with regular meet up intervals.

      socks That is an interesting thought, and I’d like to hear what experiences people have with other organizations. In America, only schools, especially school sports, seem to have that same effect on a community. I’ve been a part of many service organizations through schools, sports, non-profits, and government programs, and I’ve seen religious groups have the greatest effectiveness in forming and maintaining a long-term community bond.

    Most people live precarious. There is an economic theory that was used in japanese factories where each step in the production line actually should constantly be about to lag behind, constantly at the brink of failure to maximize throughput without breaking under normal conditions.
    This is also what capitalism is doing to our lives, personal and all industries. Most people don't have savings, are forced to spend the least amount of money on items and houses and food and optimize so that things work under normal conditions. Companies buy cheap from this or that place.
    There is competitive pressure to do this, so we are a finely balanced global economical system.
    Once climate change hits it will massively imbalance this system. Compared to the 2008 recession which was only about numbers in computers the food and water price surges and the destruction and migration from catastrophic weather events will really wreak havoc.
    So your global neighbors are more likely to nuke you than to help you.

    Technical comment: You guys seriously need to equalize your sound quality - especially volume. This may be a TH-cam issue - I've notice a LOT of videos have extremely (and obnoxiously) loud intros that then have much lower volume speaking and sound effects as the video starts - or it may be a "oops, I didn't actually learn my video editing software." Regardless, this message is important. It shouldn't be muffled, then painfully loud, then muffled again.

  • @roripantsu
    @roripantsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    How exactly do you save other people from a heat wave?

    • @ArtFreak17
      @ArtFreak17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If it's in your power to do so and are (physically/mentally/emotionally) available for it. Regular checking in with them. Helping them stay cool like making sure they have enough water to drink (plus some drinks with electrolytes too - since a lot can be lost in sweat), and learn some heat mitigation stuff like using wet towels (though this really only works well in dry heat), having access to ice (not everyone has ice makers, trays, or places to hold bags of it), fans and A/C are important too (but can overwhelm power grid, like in the Chicago example, so don't just rely on that).
      But the most important thing is the checking in on them. Because children, elderly, sick, and disabled folks are at higher risk of having a health crisis in higher temps (for a number of reasons - like high temperatures can render medications ineffective or trigger dangerous side effects).
      If the heat is followed by fire risks, helping neighbors with developing evacuation plans can also be important. (My state's been dealing with many wildfires of late, so yeah.)

    “Their morals, their code; it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. You'll see- I'll show you. When the chips are down these, uh, civilized people? They'll eat each other. See I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve.”
    In so many words, when there's one glass of water for five desperately thirsty people, we'll see how tight community relationships really are.

    When most people reference the Bible and quote Genesis 9:11 wherein God promises not to ever again destroy man, there’s a qualifier:
    - to not destroy man by flood.
    There’s no mention of not using fire ‘aka’ nuclear war or runaway global warming - both of which, in reality, are man induced. Neither is there mention of not letting man destroy himself, which might violate the tenet of Free Will.

    0:50 'squeeze a rock a long time before it turns into a diamond'?
    That is not how this works. You need carbon to build a diamond. But the elemnts of rocks are mostly oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium etc.
    There is only one special type of "Rock Groups" so called "carbonates group" that contain enough carbon to be squeezed to a diamond.

    What will be disastrous is when climate refugees swamp into your community and don't integrate - we've seen how large numbers of migrants don't integrate in a number of communities in places like Sweden and Germany. And you are right to laud the benefits of being in and an active part of a community. I would recommend that we cut our feelings to those outside of our community and take care of our own "tribe" first and foremost.

      If by "evil" you mean "people who harm others for pleasure or profit", then you're wrong. Treating other people well is smarter and more profitable in the long run, which is why even the most competitive companies or corrupt people do some good things. Otherwise, they just destroy themselves. Not to mention that lesser evils try to usurp the greater ones. What matters more is unity: if people unite in the name of evil, they will triumph. If people unite in the name of good, they will triumph. It's hard for evil to unite because, by definition, it's based on selfishness. In the long run, good has the advantage.
