While it does suck, Lightning Spear being available so early does kind of make up for it, and that plus Great Lightning Spear are generally enough go carry you through everything up to the dlc. Imo going pure Faith is actually easier than going pure Int in part because of that (the other half being that Faith has access an incredibly strong and fast non-elemental spell in WoG, which makes fighting the DLC's very elemental resistant bosses a lot easier)
"Dark" in Dark Souls 1 isn't technically an actual element. 'Dark' element spells deal a mixture of magic and physical damage, which is why they hit so hard and have so much stagger power. Dark Bead is almost literally a shotgun because of it.
Glad to see you creating these challenge videos! I have to say, though, I was confused to see you using the basic Soul Arrow. You mentioned in the video that was because Great Soul Arrow has a slower cast speed, but... it doesn't. Great Soul Arrow and Soul Arrow have the same cast speed. It does have 20 casts to Soul Arrow's 30, but that didn't seem to be a factor against any boss. I have to assume you were thinking of Heavy Soul Arrow and Great Heavy Soul Arrow, which do have a much slower cast speed. So, sorcery and magic damage are even more effective than shown in the video!
Does it really? Maybe I was using heavy soul arrow? Either way I don’t think it would’ve knocked off too much time tbh, maybe a few minutes here and there. Still the best subtype though haha
Soul Spear also has the same casting speed as those arrows, speaking of Rickert of Vinheim sells another copy of the basic Soul Arrow. The only thing that confuses me is Miracles, I've been convinced for years that casting speed only effects them in later games. Also Enchanted Estoc > Moonlight Greatsword.
@trevthedev6134 Yes Great Soul Arrow has the same cast speed as the basic SA, but it does more damage so I consider it better. You just have to accept having less casts.
Yeah, soul arrow and great soul arrow share the same casting speed, just different damage outputs and # of casts. 30 casts of soul arrow is about the same total damage as 20 casts of great soul arrow. you’d pick great soul arrow most times for dealing that damage faster, but when you’re one shotting enemies with the basic spell, more casts is better. And yeah, the heavy soul arrow variants are the ones that are slow. Very helpful tech for melee hybrid builds that don’t go all in on Int
My favorite build for Miracles is using the disk chime as a shield and a weapon to buff with sunlight blade, plus all the AOE miracle spells. i love lightning
It felt weird to see twenty available casts for lightning spear, seeing as you can't get two copies of the spell without modding it in. But pure magic runs are always fun to watch, loved watching them.
The one nitpick I have with this video is that the background music could be a bit quieter and more lowkey, it's kind like a boss fight against a spreadsheet
even with out the master key going down to the ghosts and getting the key to open the massive gate in drake valley can still help to open up some more paths early on.
Based on everything I know about the game, pyromancy is what I’d say is best. If you’re doing a “____ only” run I’d always do sorcery, but in any average playthrough pyromancy is definitely supreme. No stat requirement, easy to use, easy to upgrade, versatile, effective against almost everything, has dark variations in the dlc… Your video does show the severe limitations of doing an element only run though. Good video. Edit: your findings at the end are roughly what I expected, though I was surprised fire was so bad early on. Again, good video.
I'm shocked at how awful lightning only is past the early game. I'm so used to seeing it demolish the early game bosses that I didn't really think about the rest of the run. Would love to see this done in DS2 and 3 next (especially because dark damage is actually a thing in those games!) :3
Dark sorceries scale off the physical dmg of your catalyst as well, picking up the new londo sealers staff would´ve been a huge boost to the dark playthrough, and it scales off dex too, making it a dream come true, dmg and cast speed :)
I'm sure you probably already know this since you mentioned how you'd been raising Str during the dark playthrough, but the dark sorceries scale with both the catalyst's magadjust and their physical damage for the melee bonk, which means in theory you could've picked up the Tin Banishment Catalyst from Blighttown. It's magadjust is slightly lower than the basic Sorcerer's Catalyst and it's heavier, but it has both Str and Dex scaling, and has a spear poke w/ better base damage than the SC's bonk (admittedly the poke wouldn't matter here). With appropriate stat investment TBC is better for dark sorceries since it leans harder into the physical scaling, being nearly as good as the Demon's Catalyst while available much earlier, and since it lets them scale off Dex investment you can double dip the damage with casting speed.
Fwiw it’s technically not as good from a pure damage perspective on the bosses I was still using the sorcerers catalyst on - scaling is present for strength / dex but is fairly low, and dark orb won’t out damage it unless you are at some specific thresholds. Heck even at 50int / 30 strength, dark orb is still best with the sorcerers catalyst. True though for dex but I didn’t level any because I was shooting for the Manus catalyst towards the end. At 50 int / 10 strength, you need 22 dex for the TBC to be better than sorcerers.
Fair enough, it certainly makes sense since you were aiming for the manus catalyst from the outset. It's only while reading your response that I've vaguely recalled hearing the sorcerer's catalyst being better for dark magic than logan's catalyst, and I think I was assuming the sorcerer's catalyst was worse than it actually is.
Never realized that a pure fire pyromancy build was so impossible to have as queelag dont take damage from fire. Also, nice video and cool first impression.
Hey Trev, love your vídeo ❤, by the way, u could’ve use tin banishment catalyst for the early portion of the dark Magic run, from my testing and the wiki, is the best catalyst for dark magic without a caveat, the physical part of dark soceries damage scales with dex from this staff which also scales casting speed
Indeed it does scale with dex, but the scaling on the magic side isn’t terrific unfortunately. I was running calcs during this run through which is why you see me using the demons catalyst a few times, but generally the sorcerers catalyst will tend to outperform the TBC unless you have like 45dex/30int (at least for dark sorcery)
Not bit of surprise here - noticed it in later Dark Souls entries, that Lightning representation of spells is underwhelming. Sorcery always rocks there, as outside 1, maybe 2 bosses, anything is hardly highly resistant to it. Plus even by default they pack a punch.
Yeah, faith feels like always designed mostly as a supplementary part of builds in dark souls, so whatever lightning/other faith combat spells they do add suffer from weaker damage due to not focusing in it dealing majority of damage, something which sorcery never really suffers from, since it’s designed to be mostly casts, or a 50/50 split at least Even in Elden ring, which gave faith much more to work with, it generally doesn’t get as good a deal as sorcery still in damaging, plus with faith representing the golden order in that game, quite a few bosses have high resistance
It would be interesting to see how each of these do on NG+, as sunlightspear is locked ng+, but also yiu have the full catalog of spells from the start.
You should have had the magic caster summon beatrice for the butterfly, the pyromancer summon mildred for queelag (which is basically the only way you could clear her in fire only anyway) and have dark summon lautrec for gaping dragon or gargoyles (gaping dragon preferably so they all do a different boss) why? Just for symmetry lol
If the boss order was changed a bit, and for the dark run the endgame started after obtaining dark beed i think It would have been the easiest end game, the timer and death kinda reflect It, due to the orb being so slow to cast it took many deaths and time, but after dark beed It was so overpowered, easy and fast to cast that bossfights were like 20 seconds and ended up being the fastest run. PS: i realize that having to farm less equipment saved time, but i still think that if It was After d.b. would have been the easiest, at the expense of a more difficult mid game, I don't think so much as lightning though. That would stay IV nontheless
Yeah if I were to do NG+ dark would almost certainly win by a large margin. Heck at 50int/strength, dark bead is like hitting a running attack with a claymore… 7 times
Not gonna lie 57:42 I guessed at the beginning Lightning and fire would be in swapped positions. People say how good lighting is but It is rare I ever see it in video or play it myself. While fire just rarely gets talked about at all. Dark I couldn't really have a guess as I only hear it being a boss killer and PvP talk. Good video

I dunno if you’re going to point this out but I like the lightning spells because of their range. They might be less powerful but they can hit from so much further than pyro can
@@trevthedev6134good points. Maybe you’ll say it later on, but why not use rtsr for everything? Minimize the change in variables so that only the spells make the difference?
Hmm well I didn’t really have a set criteria going in necessarily, but one of my goals as I started working through it was to minimize deaths. I’m definitely comfortable with a lot of fights in rtsr range but not all
Don't know what you concluded, but I like faith because it has better range than any other spells while also having WotG for a very quick close AoE option. Sorcery is more useful all around, and pyromancy is obviously great for single target damage on large enemies. Dark sorceries scaling off strength with the Manus catalyst opens up some cool builds late game too. Honestly I can't even choose a personal favorite which is why this game is so good
I'm not sure why you're using soul arrow instead of great soul arrow for most of the magic run, it's stronger with the same casting speed and plenty of casts
@@trevthedev6134 You might be thinking of Heavy Soul Arrow, that has a slower casting speed. the Great versions of the Soul Arrow spells are just the same spells that do more damage and have less casts. I almost always use them over the normal versions of the spells in DS1 and 2.
Hmm bellowing adds 20% more power (usually ~25%ish more damage), dusk ring adds 50% more casts so in terms of total available damage output I think the dusk ring wins out for the most part
@@trevthedev6134 obviously we only have two ring slots, RTSR for dps, and dusk ring for the most applicable damage via spells as apposed to the extra dps boost from BDCR?
One of the changes I disliked most from Demon's is the removal of the MP bar, Dark 1 doesn't really let you play full Elementsl caster mode. My main character is at max NG+ and every cycle I collected all Spells of all kinds, and even then, you cannot really do pure runs because the defenses improve so you don't do enough damage for some parts, notably, 4 Kings is ridiculous.
the differences between the vanilla game and there master are obvious here. I only play the vanilla, and dealing with the four kings with magic is really, really hard, i barely have the dps to clear them even with soul spear, cristal tin catalyst, etc... and 65 int ! Whereas using pyromancies, this is a breeze : fire whip, great combustion, level only attunement. And i will not talk about lightning : you have to reach a faith level so high before being able to cast it that it makes the game really hard : you don't have any magic dps before the late game !
PvP: dark spells (black flame/dark bead) honorable mention: pursuers (dark spells) tranquil walk of peace/wrath of gods/force (miracles) PvE: pyromancy (power within/great combustion/chaostorm/chaos fire ball) honorable mention: great magic weapon/soul spear/crystal soul spear/great soul arrow (magic spells) sunlight blade/darkmoon blade (faith) pursuers '(dark spell) combustion (pyromancy) I will add that magic spells almost tie with pyromancy for PvE as it's really good and is thought as an easy mode by the community for a good reason but I think pyromancy take the cake because it's even more straightforward, combustion spells are very convenient for close range and I still use pyromancie when doing a magic build since power within buffs any type of damage and stack with everything (so dumb lol)
Imo crystal should have been its own category. Sure it’s classified as magic but dark magic is too and crystal and normal magic together is just unnecessarily busted
Yeah they do but I felt it would’ve been too narrow of a video if I just did the 3 categories of that makes sense. Plus it sets the precedent for doing stuff like the Way of White miracles in ds3 if I ever do that!
@trevthedev6134 way of white miracles are mostly healing , right? Except for emit force and wrath of the gods. Plus they (if I remember correctly) deal magic damage
It’s pretty interesting actually, they change damage type over all 3 games. Ds1 it’s magic damage, de2 they’re actually lightning damage for some weird reason, and ds3 they do physical damage. Also have WoW corona and divine pillars of light in ds3, although I neither are particularly good in my experience.
In Dark Souls 1, unlike Dark Souls 2 and 3, hexes theoretically scale with intelligence and strength. This is because they theoretically deal (I'm not sure if fully or partially) half physical and half magic damage.
I feel like lightning is always the strongest, safest option. Pretty much every boss across the series is either weak to it or has low resistance, and it has decent scaling for a normal playthrough
I have only just clicked onto the video and assumed that dark is the best because of dark bead. Of course I'm sure as it's an hour long video you may surprise me in a way. 😅
I'd say it's a tie between miracles and sorceries, at least in terms of damage, timing and stat based weapons and what your build is, at least if you're not willing to dupe souls. While sorceries are available since the start there's only the Moonlight Spear and Greatsword for solid weapons, and while they're great for early-midgame stuff they can't really beat out the raw damage of Grant with a faith/strength build (although in their defense they are faster and can probably serve out some solid DPS to counterbalance it). And for the missile spells you have to go down a few rabbit holes to even get the basic lightning spear miracle while everything up to Great Heavy Soul Arrow is open since the beginning, and depending on whether you have a divine weapon or are willing to kill a bunch of skellies over and over, you have to wait a while before you can get Wrath of the Gods or even Emit Force. And on top of that sorceries get the crystal spells/Soul Spear in lategame, as well as the dark spells which can scale off strength. edit: holy shit didn't know Dark Bead could do that much nvm I take it all back
Well, it wasn't really miracles vs. sorceries vs. pyromancies, it was the magical elements, lightning, magic, fire, and dark. It's why Trev didn't use any other damaging miracles besides the lightning ones (that likely would've made the O&S and Gwyn fights easier). It's also why dark damage was its own category and why the magic user wasn't using it.
honestly couldn't keep watching after the minute 7:14 honestly I wanted to stop the minute I saw you cheated the lightning spears at the start of the game idk if this was supposed to be a chalenge run or a review of the spells, but so far up to this point you did neither, and then, for me, the last nail on the coffin was you starting as a piromancer and then chucking black firebombs at the asylum demon. honestly what is your point? you start the first build using cheats and the third one you ignore the fire spells? don't say "its a fire damage" firebombs don't scale with anything, unlike pyromancy spells which scale with the pyroglove.
Hmm not really sure what your gripe is but sorry you didn’t stick around! It’s just 4 playthrough where I only do that specific type of damage (firebombs do 100% fire damage btw)
I mean, I see what you’re saying but I dunno if fighting Priscilla + Gwyndolin would’ve really changed much tbh, they’re both fairly easy bosses. Painted world can be tricky I acknowledge but I felt a full dlc sweep + base game was probably an apt comparison
The fact Sunlight Spear is locked to NG+ is a real hit against Lightning's viability.
proof that Miyazaki think NG is just half the game.

Didn't cheat in WotG for divine damage only smh my head
the differences between the vanilla game and there master are obvious here.
11:34 "MOM BIG BROTHER WON'T LET ME USE THE XBOX!" 😂
PvP: dark spells (black flame/dark bead)
honorable mention: pursuers (dark spells) tranquil walk of peace/wrath of gods/force (miracles)
PvE: pyromancy (power within/great combustion/chaostorm/chaos fire ball)
honorable mention: great magic weapon/soul spear/crystal soul spear/great soul arrow (magic spells) sunlight blade/darkmoon blade (faith) pursuers '(dark spell) combustion (pyromancy)
I will add that magic spells almost tie with pyromancy for PvE as it's really good and is thought as an easy mode by the community for a good reason but I think pyromancy take the cake because it's even more straightforward, combustion spells are very convenient for close range and I still use pyromancie when doing a magic build since power within buffs any type of damage and stack with everything (so dumb lol)
26:20 is a highlight of the run
This is a detective case - elementary
Imo crystal should have been its own category. Sure it’s classified as magic but dark magic is too and crystal and normal magic together is just unnecessarily busted
46:22 excellent menuing my liege
10 years ago, I really like magic. But I heard/see pyromancy reigns supreme.
Doesn't dark sorceries deal split damage? So basicly dark element technicly does not exist
No leveling and fist only. Lightning is too easy.
Need this for DS2 haha
The answer is brown bear
Isn't dark magic just regular magic?
More or less yeah, but I felt it was different enough to include it
In Dark Souls 1, unlike Dark Souls 2 and 3, hexes theoretically scale with intelligence and strength. This is because they theoretically deal (I'm not sure if fully or partially) half physical and half magic damage.
Magic is the only one with some power and range.
Imma watch this but I'm like 90% sure it's gonna be dark
Nice background noise for me to code :D
honestly couldn't keep watching after the minute 7:14
honestly I wanted to stop the minute I saw you cheated the lightning spears at the start of the game
idk if this was supposed to be a chalenge run or a review of the spells, but so far up to this point you did neither, and then, for me, the last nail on the coffin was you starting as a piromancer and then chucking black firebombs at the asylum demon.
honestly what is your point?
you start the first build using cheats and the third one you ignore the fire spells? don't say "its a fire damage" firebombs don't scale with anything, unlike pyromancy spells which scale with the pyroglove.
Hmm not really sure what your gripe is but sorry you didn’t stick around! It’s just 4 playthrough where I only do that specific type of damage (firebombs do 100% fire damage btw)
26:30 now that is sum bulllllllllllllll
Bonk is the best element.
Why the f would you SKIP a boss during a comparing run?? lmaooo
I mean, I see what you’re saying but I dunno if fighting Priscilla + Gwyndolin would’ve really changed much tbh, they’re both fairly easy bosses. Painted world can be tricky I acknowledge but I felt a full dlc sweep + base game was probably an apt comparison
Love is
Good Video but too much pcr ost 😅
Thanks for the feedback!
0/10. No mention of the true strongest element: physical
I know this is a joke, but it made me remember that dark is actually physical
