    I bought the dark lube instead of the thin when I bought my shutter because I had no idea, I hadn't used it yet because I was going to check a vid on how to beforehand.. thanks for the honesty Brandon!

    Dylan Kowalskis thin lube recipe is legitimately really good, you can tweak it to your liking and it’s made of mineral spirits and “3-in-1 oil” at a 3-4:1 ratio. I haven’t had any problems at all with bearing longevity using it! And ounce for ounce it’s like 20 times cheaper.

    A few things I do:
    - dont take the yoyo apart when picking out knots (dust and stuff can get in, esp in deshielded bearings)
    - clean hands. Moisture/salts on the string wrapped around bearing can rust it
    - a bit of lube on any new yoyo I get

    It was actually your older bearing maintenance vid that got me to try deshielded bearings in the first place. I hate trying to put c clips back on too so usually if I need to remove a shield it stays off too. But you're right there is a tradeoff. Easier cleaning for easier dirtying.
    A quick thing you can do if don't have time for a liquid cleaning and you just heard your bearing get a little louder. You can spin a deshielded bearing on a pencil tip (or yoyomagic bearing removal tool) then blow down into it while spinning to get out dust or string fibers. After that, get a tiny bit of lube on it as you may have also dried it a little by blowing into it. Make sure not to get any spit in there btw lol.
    Usually it's string fibers that get in my deshielded bearing as opposed to dirt. If you use string until they are really beat up and have fibers sticking out all over then you might need to clean a deshielded slightly more often. If I replace strings often, I kinda do, I rarely have any issues with deshielded. This is even though I uses strings w nylon that fray a little easier.

    Sewing machine oil is a great lube. It's literally the same thing as the lube from YYF. Also, if DarkMatter didn't work for you, you're using it incorrectly. It's basically a dry lube that comes wet so you need to treat it like a dry lube, aka graphite powders.

    Disclaimer: I have not used Dark Matter and I don't have any affiliation with YYF aside from buying some of their products.
    My understanding is that Dark Matter is a little unusual because it works in a different way from "normal" lube. Usually, lube is an oil base liquid that is applied to the bearing to create a very thin film between the metal parts. This helps protect them from moisture and from abnormal wear as well as letting the parts move smoothly.
    Dark Matter, on the other hand, I think, is closer to graphite dust where there are particles suspended in a liquid and after it has been applied to the bearing, the liquid evaporates and, in theory, leaves a layer of the dust behind that creates the protective barrier between the parts. One of the problems I have heard of with Dark Matter is that it will "dry out" if not closed tightly and you end up with just a bottle of dust... My point is, I think some people have had success with Dark Matter, but it's just a different type of thing altogether.
    As far as "making" your own lube, I have seen people swear by Dylan's method of diluting 3-in-1 oil. th-cam.com/video/zriKLNAnb9k/w-d-xo.html
    I also think it's possible to find other thin lubes that work just as well. I don't believe there is actually a large enough market for think yoyo lube that companies formulate lube specifically for that. I'm fairly certain that, usually, yoyo companies just find oils and other lubricants that are already being manufactured and they just pay to have it packaged in little bottles to sell to us throwers. With this in mind, I think it should be possible to find something equivalent to thin lube. For example, trumpet valve oil seems to work fine as it's a very, very thin oil (e.g. Blue Juice). That's not to say that it isn't easier just to buy some lube and be done with it, but it's good to be aware of the fact that there are options because, as you point out, not everyone has easy access to the same retailers.

      In the pocket-knife world the pivots have more and more frequently turned to bearings. Most common lubes in use that I know of are KPL (knife pivot lube), Diawa reel oil (for fishing reels), and Nano-oil (which comes in all different thicknesses, so get the thin stuff)
      I have tried KPL as a make-do and works just fine on yoyos, no noticeable difference between it and yoyo-factory thin.

    I've found many yoyos that I've purchased that need their bearings cleaned right away. Usually the problem is just too much lube/oil/grease(yes grease) inside. It happens. Of course, Iv'e also had bad bearings from "Fresh out of the new box" yoyos too. My first cleaning is with acetone. That typically takes care of most stuff. Sometimes I repeat. If it's still dirty, I'll use mineral spirits and the paper slip method since mineral spirits don't evaporate as fast. If that doesn't do it, then get a new bearing. Sometimes I'll use some thick lube in the bearing first and then do a few short sleepers to distribute the lube around. This sometimes lifts the particulate matter so it will come out easier when I use solvents for cleaning.
    Note: While a quart of "pure acetone" costs me like $8 in a hardware store, at a manicure/beauty supply place, they have "pure" acetone for like $4/gallon. DO NOT use the manicure acetone. It DOES NOT work. Just use the hardware store pure acetone to "undo" your previous bad decision. I don't use lighter fluid as my solvent of choice.
    A good lube substitute is no-residue spray/aerosol electrical contact cleaner available at most hardware stores. Well, it's not really a lube, but more of a "I need to clean my bearing out fast". And for that, it's worked very well for me. The propellant often blasts away particulate matter as well. I've never had a problem. I do agree with sticking with lubes meant for yoyos AND to avoid Dark Matter.
    I prefer my bearings shielded if they came with shields. I have no reason for this other than “I like it that way”.

    • @MalachiBrown
      @MalachiBrown 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When used for serious purposes, bearings are usually "packed with grease" to reduce wear and provide a barrier to contamination.

  • @Monosloth2

    In bobs case i think he has to find a way to dissect the bearing and put everything back tgt? Sounds like smth is loose in the bearing and my guess, it isnt assembled properly. if its fixed after washing/lubing then that would be great.
    bearings take a few months for it to break in nicely so do maintain and lube them regularly for a long and smooth spin. ( i dislike that bearing noise lol )

      It's not bad .I've skated and bmxd for most of my life and the only time bearings on those things go out is bc either they snapped in half bc I didn't maintain them and they got super heated then got wet and cooled way to quickly and they exploded or on bmx sometimes the race inside the bearing wears down . But with yoyos none of these factors are apparent there's no weight load besides what 50 to 70 grams so as long as you maintain them and don't buy the cheapest ones they could potentially last for decades

    A bit late to the game on this video, and I should note that Dylan kowalski gets the credit for this, but if you mix 2 parts mineral spirits with one part 3m all purpose lube, it will pretty much work like yo-yo lube. Apply it just like thin lube, and considering a small bottle of thin lube lasts forever,
    This is basically a one time purchase.
    Also, if you put too much in, you can burn the lube out.

      In some instances it will be fine, but you may slow it down too much and make your Yoyo semi responsibe

    Lube is overrated, Dry is where it's at. Also C-clips aren't usually that tricky IMO. And lastly, Acetone is SOOOOO much better than lighter fluid.

    • @jordanlazarus7345
      @jordanlazarus7345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may have a point. Most bearing issues are from dirt and moisture getting inside of the bearing, it takes a really long time for a dry bearing to wear out and it takes away the possibility of over lubing your bearing.

    Bob’s bearing is dirty. Need to use those air spray can you normally use to clean your keyboard.

    • @LawFarrell
      @LawFarrell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Libra Boiii Yes, forgot to mention I do that first. Then use the air spray can after while it’s still wet. Put it on the edge of a pencil and watch it spin while spraying it. I find it better and never really had any problems. The noise stays if you don’t blow it. Done it loads of time. I might need to do a video to demonstrate it. 😉

    • @jordanlazarus7345
      @jordanlazarus7345 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Libra Boiii honestly, with a bearing that bad I'd go as far as to leave it in there for about half an hour. That bearing is kinda cooked.
