@@NessNayii Thanks! I tried to pick them based on factors like vibe, and "heaviness" of sound -- the layers of noise on the MBV album seemed a good fit, and To Bring You My Love has a nasty guitar tone and dark mood. The Cure and Bauhaus albums have both. Television should have some appeal based on the guitar work alone.

      Einstürze! Great suggestion!
In that same, basic vein, (dark and percussive) I just added Crash Worship's, ¡Espontáneo! to the suggestions here.
If you like Blixa and company, you should consider checking that out.
Here's my summation I posted, above:
"I'd add to these suggestions Crash Worship's "¡Espontáneo!"
The track "Awake", specifically, but the entire album is essential listening for anyone into dark and powerful music.
Uber~Bohemian Drum/Percussion/Chanting group with some electronics, horns and tape manipulation, but used in the same fashion.
Very dark, yet celebrating of life.
At live gigs, a member would walk around the audience, from time to time, pouring either water or wine all over the heads and into the mouths of the crowd, along with fireworks and spontaneous piles of audience~ignited clothing, crazy dancing...
It's what you'd expect to be the soundtrack from a REALLY intense, dark and spastic ritual in a Horror Film, but engulfing you in a club.
They'd end the shows with an around the block procession of the band, still playing with the audience in tow, like children being led off to the nether world.
      Good stuffs.... ;)"
      Cheers!

@@alejandroantoniovaladezuva4504 Merzbow has an ENORMOUS discography (I've got 40 albums and there's probably 10 times as much out there and it can get a bit samey). I reckon '24 Hours A Day of Seals' is a good metal choice as it features some evil sounding guitar loops. I love Japanese noise (early Boredoms, Incapacitants, Masonna etc.) because it's so unhinged it makes me smile whereas I find metal seems too serious for me, maybe that's because I'm 60 and life's getting too short to want to actively seek out doom and gloom. Hey Steve, hey Revolver! This is a superb list; grateful to know most of 'em, will check the others out. Here's my 11, with some descriptions for the interested/uninitiated...
    1. Zu- Italian 'Noise Jazz' trio, consisting of a Drummer, Bassist, and Bass Saxophonist, playing his brass through a Distortion Rig. Live, the Sax sounds like the Ship's Horn of Satan's Flagship Destroyer. The HEAVIEST thing I have ever heard, Metal or otherwise! Literally came outta the show with my ears screaming in pain.
    2. Béla Bartók- Hungarian 20th Century Composer, known for the dark, ominous atmospheres in a lot of his music. Some of his music was in the Score of Kubrick's version of 'The Shining'.
    3. Univers Zero- Experimental/Avant-garde Music Ensemble from Belgium, led by drummer Daniel Denis. Part of the 'Rock In Opposition' musical Movement from that country. Like Bartók, whom they were influenced by, they're renowned for their dark, nightmarish soundscapes.
    4. Polkadot Cadaver- Californian Experimental Rock/Fusion outfit, partially formed from the ashes of Alt-Metal outfit Dog Fashion Disco. Known for their eclectic style, and eccentric song/album titles. Check out the album 'Purgatory Dance Party' as a starter.
    5. Atrium Carceri- One-man Dark Ambient/Experimental project from Sweden. Explores Themes such as Physical/Mental Imprisonment, Oppression, and Emptiness.
    6. Phurpa- Russian ensemble dedicated to highlighting the Traditional music of the indigenous Bon People of Siberia; gutteral Throat Singing, ethnic percussion, and terrifying instruments I call the "Death Pipes" 😅. Check out their Set for the Boiler Room crew here on YT. Spine-tingling.
    7. CocoRosie- Experimental duo consisting of 2 American sisters, known for their eclectic style. There's even some use of Distorted Guitar in there! Suitable for open-minded Metalheads as quite a bit of their material is dark and surreal. Unique.
    8. Niccolo Paganini- well, he literally was known as 'The Devil's Violinist'!! Italian Virtuoso, known for his near-Mythic playing ability and Composition. Arguably the World's first-ever Rock Star.
    9. Sunburned Hand Of The Man- Experimental Collaborative from the North-East USA, featuring literally DOZENS of rotating members. Known for their darkly surreal, feverish Sound on a lot of recordings.
    10. Those Poor Bastards- Dark Americana/Gothic Western duo from the Midwest US. Lyrical themes include Damnation, Depression, Addiction, Pariahism, and a general contempt for Mainstream Society; pretty Metal themes in all.
    11. Nick Drake- English Folk/Alternative Singer-Songwriter, known for his odd Picking Styles, and frequently dark/moody/morose songs. Caked in self-destruction and tragedy, he never achieved the success in life he deserved, only gaining recognition for his work 25 years after his untimely death.
Hope this enriches someone's Ear Palette out there, enjoy!! 🤟🏻

    • @Rr0gu3_5uture
      @Rr0gu3_5uture 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First Utterance is a brilliant record, really creepy and strange but still hauntingly beautiful. I first heard it, and then he taped it for me as a kid in my friend's neighbour's house along with the first Heron LP that I liked a lot. My best friends next door neighbour was a rich, eccentric record exec for Pye Records, his house was packed to the gills with promo records, weird promo stuff like frisbees? and posters from the likes of Comus, Donovan Leitch, Velvett Fogg, Atomic Rooster, Status Quo John Kongos, Titus Groan, and a ton of other more modern stuff later on. In the 1980s he got an A&R job for Sony. I think he was the first person in my small hometown to own a CD player 😂. He was unmarried and always in America or Japan on business, so me and my friend got paid to house sit and look after his dog in the summer. I loved it as it was like a mansion considering I lived on a Council Estate at the time. Since me and my mate loved music so much and used to write songs and jam with his big brothers bass guitar, acoustic and Casio CZ101 synth but had no drummer, he actually gave us the indefinite loan of his Linn Drum machine in the summer of 1988, at the time we had no idea the thing cost a fortune until we formed a proper band in the early 90s and had to get the volume knob fixed. He would also give us dozens and dozens of free promos, sampler lps, CDs and Tapes by bands that sometimes didn't even have their first record out yet. One of my favourites was a promo LP of Living Colours Vivid that came in a pack with the cassette, t-shirt stickers and stuff like sweatbands? Hahaha ! I'm rambling on. It's weird how one wee comment can trigger 1000 mad memories.

Where do you begin with a list like this? Do you assume the listener wants to range far afield of metal for something different? Mozart, Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, and the Beatles. There you go :) Or that they want to branch into things that share some more obvious affinities with metal? If the latter, try:
    * Einstürzende Neubauten: experimental industrial art rock. The Strategies Against Architecture II compilation is a good starting point. Haus der Lüge and Halber Mensch are cool albums.
    * Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works Vol. II for dark, eerie, hypnotic ambient music.
    * If you dig the drama and sweep and grandeur of power or epic metal, classical music is an obvious genre to explore, especially the Late Romantic era into the mid 20th century. Try the late symphonies of Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler's 2nd or 5th symphony, the orchestral works of Shostakovich, Bax, Madetoja, Holst, Nielsen, Suk, Novak, etc. Allan Pettersson's 7th symphony is both grandiose and crushingly bleak. It'll make the black metal guys look like a bunch of posers ;) Gloria Coates or Penderecki or Ligeti if you want something more experimental but perhaps dark or gloomy or unsettling.
    * You could listen to a lot of Italian baroque instrumental music and instantly hear the 1600's equivalent of thrash metal riffs. (Ask Yngwie!) Vivaldi, Locatelli, Tartini, et al.
    * Obviously metal-adjacent music like classic hardcore: Bad Brains (Rock for Light), Agnostic Front (Cause for Alarm), Cro-Mags (The Age of Quarrel), etc. or some post-punk/alt rock like Killing Joke, the Sisters of Mercy, et al.
    * Speaking of Townes Van Zandt, check out one of his spiritual successors, Benjamin Tod and his band The Lost Dog Street Band, especially the album Weight of a Trigger. Dark, honest storytelling in the best country/Americana tradition.
    * If you like the darkness of some metal, try a lot of post-punk in addition to Bauhaus: The Sound (From the Lions Mouth), The Cure (Disintegration), Siouxsie and the Banshees (Juju), Joy Division (Unknown Pleasures), the Chameleons (Script of the Bridge), Echo & the Bunnymen (Ocean Rain), et al.

Bad Religion, 'Recipe for Hate' - 'Suffer' is the obvious pick, but the songwriting is tighter here.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, 'Murder Ballads' - Several could be here, but the intensity, black humor, and subject matter give this the edge.
Johnny Cash, 'American Recordings' - Duh.
Tom Waits, 'Rain Dogs' - Joy and madness, with some very pretty ballads.
Doctor Dre, 'The Chronic' - Violence and weed.
