Epiphone is owned by Gibson. Squire is owned by Fender. It makes total sense for the Fender and Gibson brands to move up market while Epiphone and Squire take up the lower end of the market.
It makes a lot of sense to carve out different segments for your different product lines

@@Typical.Anomalyeveryone is trying to monetize their art, that's what makes it competitive. In a nutshell, there is certainly a competition too: in technique, sound design, and in some more aspects. It's not all as black and white as some people want art to be.
I've been in recruiting, staffing, and HR for over two decades now in the US, and Glenn is spot on. If you want to see the true face of entitlement in the US, you don't go to an unemployment or welfare office, you go to a boardroom. Employers, who KNOW the median wage for a given job in their area, will routinely try to undercut it but at least 10% to 30%, and often more, and then complain that, "nobody wants to work."
If you tried that with ANY other input into a business, you would be laughed out of the room, and be out of business very soon. If, for example, you needed steel but couldn't buy any, because reasons, and then gave a speech about how steel manufacturers were lazy and didn't want to make bar and coil anymore, everyone would know you were full of shit and fucking nuts. The FIRST question you would be asked is, "what did you offer to PAY for that steel?"
For some reason, when it comes to labor, employers think different laws of economics apply and that employees are solely to blame when employers offer them shit wages, and they have the wherewithal and presence of mind to turn down those offers. In the labor market, for some god unknown reason, the seller is always at fault, the buyer is always right. That's bullshit. No employer that pays at least the median wage for a given job ever has any problems finding OR retaining employees.
People like you are exactly the kind of people we need in this world! Truth there. I have two college degrees. Enough contract and consulting work to make someone's eyes water. And certifications in my field that most people don't even have. Yet the employers who were saying they could not hire anyone were the same ones who would see me being blind on a resume and say that I was just not the right fit or some variation of that. So I said screw them and started my own business in my field. I have two rules. Pay above indusrty standard. That way I can make the work worth it to people. If you value people for the work they actually do they will in turn value the work they do and thus make more money. More money is always good for everyone. and be open to the unusual. Give me your cast aways. Your broken an beaten. Your dregs of society. Because where other people see them as not what they are looking for in their little check boxes of who fits what I see people who have something to prove. People who are going to have a fire under their ass and want to show that they are worth more than what other places saw them as. I'm not saying I am correct, but at least from my experience this has worked out for every person I've hired. My highest performing employee is a gentleman who made a mistake as a kid and got pinched for dealing drugs at 18. Did a couple years up state and came out with a criminal record and by extension nobody willing to hire him outside of fast food. He literally applied to a job opening I had because he was trying to keep his unemployement benefits after losing one job and while looking for another. I saw he had a solid work history. And gave him a reach out. He'd never worked around financial information a day in his life, but was trying to go to online school to get a degree. He wanted to learn. And was willing to adapt. Where people see a felon who is any number of unflattering things because he screwed up in the past I saw a husband and a father who was busting his ass to do better by his family and at least from appearances had left that life behind him. Where people see dealing drugs I see someone with a drive to hustle and to work as hard as they have to to make a buck. With the right kind of motivation and good influence I can turn someone like that into a force of nature in my field. And I did. When you value people as people they will work harder. Which means you make more money as a result. Invest in those who will invest in you. At 31 I have no right to be running a business in the financial industry that is worth as much as mine is. But I am. And it is because of the people around me. Employers need to remember that from times. That people more than anything are your single bigest commodity
It doesn’t help that most companies rely on software to look for candidates which eliminates most potential hires. Or that the demands are unreasonable.
Cybersecurity is desperate for workers right now and I go get a cybersecurity degree from the best community college in my state because I wanted a career change to something I was passionate about. I taught myself how to code websites when I was a kid because I wanted to know how they were made. So I get a cybersecurity degree, a bunch of cybersecurity certs, and zero job offers. These companies are telling me how desperate they are for cybersecurity personnel, but nobody wants to train you even if you’ve already got a foundation. I can work my way up from entry level to bank manager, but I can’t work in cybersec. No investment in employees wanted. We only want to hire from within the industry and then wonder why we’re so desperate for employees.
Companies can't let go of the 19th century mindset that says workers should be grateful to receive a pittance in exchange for most of their time and energy. Workers have never willingly accepted that idea, so unlike the 19th century, when you could mow them down with gatling guns whenever they refused to participate, today you need to pay them enough to meet their needs, plus some more on top if you want them to give a shit about the work or the company. Most employers still haven't figured out that paying them just enough to convince them to show up means they will withhold productivity by giving minimum effort. It's like paying for the lowest speed internet plan; you've saved money, but you aren't getting value for money, and it's a worse experience all around.
Boardroom entitlement is insane. Many directors do sweet fk all actual work, especially compared to what they're paid (some do almost nothing), but they love cultivating this myth that they're some special breed, who are the only ones that can do what they do. And the nepotism... for every person in a boardroom on merit, there's one who simply knows the right people or went to the right school. I've seen it firsthand. They don't belong on a pedestal.
As for the "businesses can't find workers" narrative, stop advertising ghost jobs to harvest data and let's see what the real job vacancy numbers look like.
Nobody wants to work. There is a demand for workers so the wage offer should be more, right? “No, let’s just illegally transport foreigners into the country, pay them less, and charge the tax payer to house them. This board meeting is adjourned”.

As an American I love you pointing out how fucked it is here. I feel we could all listen to outside perspective. Don't get me started about both sending a country money and weapons and the giving aid to the people they kill. Seems fucked.
Well it is, but is not just the US, is the government everywhere, I'm from the south of the border and the government knew about Fast & Furious operation and they help that manslaughter. As far as I know every politician is a greed bastard, ones for money and the worse for power itself, and they think we're all are their human cattle. It happens everywhere, so I know that the US Government do not represent the majority of their people as I'm dead sure that the government here doesn't represent every mexican. The conclusion I got is that the worse of society are not in a 4*4 jail cell but on the Congress or Gov building, specially the military (deep state). This goes with the evil state founded or simply greedy company as well.
So we need to exercise the little power we've got left that is our money and our precious finite time.

We Americans are being lied to, big time. The facts are also that the war is none of our business. There's no reason for us to be involved in any way. I absolutely love my Gibson Les Paul! Oh wait... it's a Tokai Love Rock that I got for $700. It plays great and *gasp* stays in tune.

As a Gibson snob, imagine the surprise when I received my Chinese made Epiphone SG and was thoroughly impressed.
Now imagine paying half or less than that much for an identical copy off the same CNC machine. . . and it says "Gibson" on it. . . #Chibson.
Chinese made guitars are alright if you just want to sit at home and dick around, but if you spend two hours a day learning new material, do two 4 hour band practices a week, and then do 3 gigs on the weekends, then Gibson is the workhorse that you need. Even the cheaper Studio Les Pauls will handle that kind of playing. Chinese guitars will warp, bend, twist, and fall apart within a year of that kind of playing. They are made to look shiny and new out of the box, but they really do suck donkey schlong.

@@WeeFreeMan78I must have gotten a good one. A really good one. Chinese factories are not heated in the winter, and I know that it has huge impacts on adhesives and finishes. I don't trust that their woods are properly dried and cured either. It matters.
I have a picture of a Gibson neck cutaway. I'd love to send it to you. It shows the design that hasn't changed since the 1950's. It proves they do this shit on purpose.

@@MittensOnly That's the one thing (out of many) Leo Fender did right. He wasn't a guitarist so when he designed the Strat he asked guitarists for input. You know, the people that actually use the tools, not some yokels who wouldn't even know how to hold one.
@MittensOnly I think ESP have perfected the Les Paul style shape with their thinner Eclipse bodies and made them way more comfortable. Fernandes Monterrey as well.
Wouldn't buy a Gibson LP. Wanted a Zak Wylde Bullseye years ago or a LP Custom but not interested in LPs anymore

Wow, I didn't know Yorkville still existed. I bought my combo Yorkville bass amp in 1988 when I cashed out my pension(because I resigned, not because I was retiring, LOL) from Warner Elektra Atlantic. It still works! It's traveled quite a bit and looks like it. I traded it to someone for an amp, I know who has it, and he still uses it. Also, I'm having a bass made for me by an American luthier. I am confident it will be amazing, judging by his other work, for around $1100 US.
Yorkville, which still makes Traynor amps is in the east end of Toronto.Great products. My keyboard amp, which I bought when I was 18 still works great. I'm 68 now. I call that quality!

the necks on gibson guitars breaking has been a consistent issue with them for over 40 years now when my grandfather was a young man he use to get gibson replacement necks and all the hardware and build the bodies put them all together paint them and sell them as gibson guitars that needed neck replacement the replacement necks had serial numbers on them he counterfeited a bunch of gibson guitars and made decent money doing it...

Hey Glenn. Your thumbnail for this video made me sad. I broke the headstock on my LP in 1999. I was 19 and it was a month before our band was to go into the studio. Luckily it got fixed literally the day before we tracked but it required an 800 mile round trip drive to get it.
Having said that, can we get a tour of the studio? I would love to see the setup. Hopefully next year my wife and I will be buying a new place and room for my studio is a must. I just want some inspiration. Thanks and keep up the kick ass work!

Great videos Glenn, I’ve definitely noticed the increase in quality. I’m not a metal player per se, but I find alot of your advice and knowledge translates over to pretty much any genre when properly applied.

Hey now! I complemented the clean tone on your "This was the Worst Thing to Ever Happen to Fender" video back on December 26th.
Australia is the same. We used to get really weird stuff like paid "annual leave" and this really out there thing called "sick leave". Imagine a couple of weeks off with flu or injury and you didn't have to worry about rent and bills?

A Remaster video would be sweet! They've gotten my money a few times and I don't really know why.
I always thought of those like, "Oh the band needs money? I like them enough I suppose."
Really excited for the Remastered album comparisons. I can't think of a single time where I sat down and compared original vs remastered mixes and thought the new one was better.
Makes a valid point for piracy as well, because where else are you supposed to find the originals when record companies refuse to print them and streaming platform just have the remastered versions.
I dunno, I think the later Husker Du albums would benefit from a remaster to remove all the stupid 80s tropey crap that gets in the way of the music. Bark at the Moon, too.

If you want to know the reason wages in America are so fucked, just look into Dodge V. Ford. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that companies have to operate in the interest of their shareholders as opposed to their employees or their customers. That's why the employees get jack and the customers get fucked with the prices.

Congratulations Glen on you 448 episodes/10th anniversary. I haven’t last that long at the same job ever. Even I’ve listened to rock music since kid and going to gigs and concerts, I’m new to guitar. Of course the first brands a looked for were Gibson and Fender. With my skills and a family and mortgage to take care of I couldn’t justify spending such amount for a Les Paul, so I went for Epiphone or Squier. But being new to guitar also took away any bias on these traditional brands, so I discovered Harley Benton guitars. I totally agree that there’s a lot of value and quality in the upcoming “new” brands without breaking the bank. I’m happy with my cheap guitars, and whenever I see a 3-4K guitar review I think its just out of proportion because most of the features and premiums are already contained in my guitar. Glenn, I've been subscribed for...damn. I can't remember how many years(damn old age). I absolutely love your content, even though I'm not a working musician or work in recording/production. I've always been passionate and curious about music. I love learning about all the new tools for recording and seeing how things are done to get different tones and sounds. I have to say I am definitely impressed how much your playing has improved. And I appreciate you trying to keep things fresh and entertaining. Keep up the great work.

By the way i just want to thank you for saving me a bunch of money as a studen, and making me buy guitars that i find comfortable over the ones worse but that have a big brand name on the headstock and pickups.

OMG dude, this makes me feel so much better. Seeing how people don't listen or watch your stuff and just explode with feeling their opinions are valid or even wanted.
The guitar shop I hung out in for the first 20 years of my life was an OG Fender & Gibson dealer (Roselyn's Music in Dover, OH), and I can confidently agree with you that the Gibson quality decreasing... haven't noticed the same reduction with Fender quality, but it's been awhile.
They had a period in the mid 70s to mid 80s where they made some unpopular changes (like comping woods instead of using single blocks, using laminates etc under paintwork to save a bit of money) but even then nothing fell off or cracked. Those guitars sell for silly money. Trouble with the LP is its overcomplicated to build: arch tops, binding, set necks, push-pull wiring... but when done right (usually by others) it looks and sounds great.

hey dude i got question about my guitar sound Problem. I got 2 guitars one Jackson with active emg's and one hardline (a "cheap" brand from the music store i got guitar Lessons) with single coil format humbucker i dont know the brand. In my rehersal room i got an Engl retro100 with engl cab and in the guitar lesson room is a fender Champion 40. I know that you cant really compare these tone whise but this is not the Problem i have. my problem is that my both guitars sound on my engl nearly same in high gain and low gain and clean but at the fender the jackson sound awful and only the hardline sounds good. do you got any idea why this happens. would be happy to see the question in this format. thanks and have a great day
Hey Glenn, great job as always. Wanted to chime in on the remastered Black Album. I'm pretty sure I still have my original CD somewhere, I'm curious about the difference between it and the remastered edition on Spotify. But, I can absolutely tell you that the previous version that was on Spotify was almost unlistenable. It had more snaps and pops than a bowl of Rice Krispies! I'm pretty sure that it was due to bad clipping when it was converted to a streaming format. I remember ripping my CDs years back (I'm that old!) and getting some bad clipping on a few because of the "everything louder than everything else" mastering you mentioned. What I'm curious about is if there's actually a difference in the current "remaster" or did they just fix the clipping problem.

You have guitar setup skills . Ever consider doing a segment where you get warmoth/mightymite/wilkinson parts and make a partscaster?
I have made 6 warmoth partscasters ranging from 600 - 2000 usd and its super fun to mix and match stuff.
Warmoth is fender liscenced so you can get the rr and king v /dnky super strat body shapes/headstocks from jackson and an iceman if you are into that sort of thing.
do the whole ,low buck metal machine / moneypit metal machine
I just got done with a strat tobacco burst body with telecaster control route a gibson scale (24-3/4")boat neck that makes baseballbats look small a straight 10 inch radius fretboard and SSS pickup layout .
But I did the single sized humbuckers with coil tapping. I did all the wiring and had pickups from a parts donor guitar got locking gotoh tuners and a gotoh tele bridge /controleplate/neckplate
i am all in for 700 and its got ss frets and roasted flame maple neck (unfinished)

Back when I was a motorcycle mechanic I went for a job at a BMW dealership. It was just around the time Ewan whatshisface had done that Long Way Round programme on the TV using a BMW R1200GS.
I had extensive experience and multiple professional qualifications under my belt.
I attended the interview and was subsequently called back to attend a meeting with the manager who starts telling me that when customers buy a BMW motorcycle, they aren't buying a motorcycle, but instead buying into a lifestyle and a brand that demonstrates to others who they are.
He then goes on to say, you're more than qualified for the job but I looked too much like a biker and that made him feel uncomfortable with how that would sit with the BMW brand. I did try to argue that it may make customers feel more secure handing their bikes over to someone who looks like they know motorcycles but he was adamant.
Lifestyle brand.
This is what Gibson are doing now. You're not necessarily buying a top notch instrument, you're buying into the "I own a Gibson club" and the associated bragging rights.
They want to price them out of reach of the average "Hairy Herbert" and soon, as we've seen with those daft pickups in a box, they're probably going to start selling outrageous accessories... because "Lifestyle innit".
How long before we start seeing $100 straps, $100 "speedtone" knobs or pickup selector knob tips made from narwhal tusk and engraved by Bolivian virgins?
They can't compete on any other part of a level playing field so they invented their own level, a very fragile one that depends on people wanting to choose the Gibson lifestyle

Glenn, I've seen the clip meter light up on Reaper in the background a few times. Did you know you can put a comp/limiter (or any FX) on the INPUT in Reaper? I can't recall if I've ever seen that it any other DAW.

Hey Glenn love the show as always. I know you've done the videos to death on pickups but I have one more suggestion!
You have thoroughly proven that higher build quality pickups sound very similar. Perhaps an interesting video would be comparing notably bad pickups with the acceptable ones and demonstrating the microphonic/feedback of a cheap pickup.
Or compare pickups everyone "knows" are bad like the factory Ibanez pickups and the dimarzio upgrades.
There is not as big a difference between my dimarzio Evo set and my friends stock jem Jr as my wallet would've hoped!

I got the 'complete' waves plugin set about 15 years ago from a torrent site (not the PB) but got overwhelmed, went back to repear's stock plugins and started buying plugins when on sale. Yay black Friday and labour day etc.
I just got an LTD Phoenix. Stainless frets, tonepros hardware, locking hardware, etc. I have some high end and vintage guitars, and it keeps up with them for sure. It’s not exactly a cheap guitar, but it’s not nearly at Gibson or PRS prices. Other than needing to file the nut down for my taste, it was ready to go out of the box. Hell, one of my main gigging guitars is a partscaster I put together for like $500. It’s insane the choices we have these days.
Any chance you could do a speaker shootout between a G12T-75, A-Type, and V-Type from Celestion? I'm curious how they compare to one another in back-to-back-to-back test.
So seeing you talking about the Stam 78 provoked me to bring this up. I understand that comparing different pickups/guitars is a completely different ballgame from comparing plugins to hardware as the workflow alone can make the cost of hardware worth the price. That being said, I’d love to see a blind plugin vs hardware shootout from you involving some compressors/preamps, as your shootouts are always completely unbiased and extremely well done.

That remaster video sounds amazing. I'm a little younger than a lot of the music I like, so I grew up with streaming/digital music, and tons of remasters only being the default. Half of the megadeth albums that were easily available in the early/mid 2000s were the remasters and going back to listen the original recordings are kind of insane at the difference. Some albums from certain bands almost feels like we're getting different albums completely
Spot on man. I was just getting into music when the 2004 Megadeth remasters came out so that's what I grew up with, but when I found the original Rust In Peace a couple years later I was blown away! It's a completely different album man! Like finding gold. It's a shame that most people won't get to listen to that version

Took me YEARS before hearing an original print of Rust In Peace.
And it’s not that I don’t think they were BAD per say…. It just feels strange getting a different product. It’s like seeing the original cuts of Star Wars after growing up with the remaster films. Very strange feeling.
I wouldn't have minded the Megadeth remasters so much if it weren't for all the structural changes Dave made, including adding in parts that weren't necessary and cutting out other musicians' parts to put more emphasis on his. So Far So Good So What is a prime example of an album that *NEEDED* to be remastered. The original album sounded like garbage. Not Butch Vig Garbage, boom box home recording garbage. The excessive gated reverb on the drums was terrible, and the drums were so treble heavy that they were downright painful to listen to. Plus, the stupid delay on Dave's voice made it sound like he was singing into a toilet full of diarrhea and puke. The guitars were painfully midrangey and wimpy sounding. You can't fix Chuck's boring drumming, but you can at least make the recordings sound half okay.
@@ErickC yeah, pretty spot on. I find it strange that Rust got so much stuff changed out of those first four albums considering how much RIP is considered damn near perfect.
KIMB and So Far, are ROUGH mixes, for sure.
@@ErickC I get where you're coming from, but the way I see it albums are a reflection of the era they released in and the skill level of everyone involved at that time. Piggybacking off your other comment, of course Bark At The Moon has tropey 80's shit! It released in '83! Haha. I see music as a time capsule, yes you might hate the original So Far So Good mix, but that's what everyone involved in the process thought sounded appropriate AT THAT TIME.
I also find that the rougher a mix is the more the album can stand out. It can give an album some character. Good songs are good songs regardless of how polished a mix can be, And Justice For All and As The Palaces Burn being prime examples. But what do I know, I also happen to like the original So Far So Good much more than the 2004 remaster haha
Again I totally appreciate where you're coming from and I get it. I just don't like when bands can't leave a record alone after release. As an artist I'm sure it's hard to look back on old work with more experienced eyes (or ears I guess) and not feel like it is inadequate. But they should let old work be done, lest they George Lucas the entire thing.

Is that in reference to the particular sound of stock ProTools plugins like their Dyn3 Compressor? I'm just curious how the choice of DAW can affect the sound.

I have to say, I have some recent Fender instruments, USA made, and both are very well made and not all that crazy expensive. Fender really embraces the whole range of the market, from bespoke custom instruments, to the USA line, the MIJ and MIM and their stuff made overseas at the bargain end of the range. I have a Geddy Lee USA Jazz bass that's freaking awesome, right out of the box, right from the start of covid era. Couldn't have been more perfect.
My gripe with Fender is the bad color choices. It seems like a conspiracy to drive people to use the Mod Shop to pay $2,000 to get a color you want.

People sometimes calls a remix a remaster and that bothers me
Remixing includes changing the actual mix whle hte master keeps original mix 100 the same as original
Both remix and remaster still need to use the multi track original studio recording. The chance of getting exactly the same mix is almost impossible and actually pointless, unless the original master is unusable. There are many steps involved in getting a final mix, especially with LP's each of which will affect the final product.
@@valvenator No, a remaster only needs the stereo mixdown. When a mix is done, its usually bounced to a stereo file/tape and thta is sent to a mastering engineer.
That has headroom. That can be remastered later.
About remasters, when you do the mastering, you only work on the final stereo track but when I listen to some "remasters", sometimes I notice that they actually worked on the individual tracks, which is mixing (or "re-mixing"). Shouldn't it be called "re-mix" instead of "re-master"?

I've heard somewhere that remastering old records is done by artists, because than they can get royalties for those albums. It was something along the lines of record labels taking a solid cut of the sales. Only after few years the artist has the right to remaster an album, re-release it and then they get full cut of the sales.
I remember hearing that years ago (back when I thought rock star was a realistic career goal), but I never looked into it. Time to crank start the old googly.
In most cases, all they do is to compress it a little more and raise the volume...

I love the idea of comparing the original and remastered versions, where the original was better. On the flip-side; can you think of any examples where the original was okay, but the remaster was better and compare those as well? I would love to see "both sides of the coin" on this topic. I was grateful for Hakens Album Visions getting a remaster a while back! It made it much nicer
