    Fascinated by your videos. My Dad was in C Co., 820th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Told me he went ashore on the 7th, the boat having to go over the dead bodies in the surf, there hadn't been time to remove them yet, the sight was sickening, he threw up over the side. I found his Battalion's Monthly Unit History for June 1944 in the National Archives in College Park, Maryland , and we hired a guide to take us to the site where he came ashore at Easy Red. His Battalion built airfields/ALGs A-2 at Criqueville-en-Bessin, A-5 at Chippelle/,Cartigny-L’Épinay and A-12 at Lignerolles. I visited those sites in 2017 with my younger daughter, who took me there for my 60th Birthday present. Dad never got to make the return trip back there that he always wanted to, cancer took him at age 60 in 1980.

      Thanks for that input. Must have been hard landing on an apparently peaceful beach in those conditions.

    For a history geek without the funds to check everything off my bucket list, I just wanted to thank you for your excellent then-and-now videos. As we'd say in the U.S. Navy, BRAVO ZULU!

    My sweet daddy landed on Omaha beach. The only thing he would ever say about it was that they thought they were strong and invincible till they looked in the water and saw the arms and legs of the boys that went before them. Bless their hearts. ♥️

      My father landed with the Royal Canadian Engineers on Juno Beach down the beach east of Omaha ...The first waves on Juno took very heavy losses along with the men on the other beaches they through determination and bravery managed to overcome...Those men that day were part of the Greatest Generation..They will all be remembered through eternity ...

    This is excellent. I have read a lot about this and I have visited Omaha beach. It is not easy to link the old pictures to current locations, so in that sense this video answered a lot of questions for me.

    Very informative and I found myself realising that some areas you featured I had cycled around 25 years ago . This production will help people who have not been there to realise quite how close together the towns , hamlets and battle sites are , thank you and God bless all those who gave their lives during the campaign overlord and ww2

    Colin if memory serves me, the fuel pipelines coming ashore and going inland were known as Operation Pluto....

      The pipe lines at St Honorine and Port en Bessin, were Pluto minor. The pipeline that went from the Isle of Wight o Cherbourg was pluto Major. Pipe Line Underwater Transport of Oil.

      William, the doughboys of the 2nd in that shot are from the 9th Inf. Reg., when I was there in 1984 I met two of them one is just out shot to the left - Sgt. Jerry Manber and his best buddy is the chap fifth back looking at the camera - Harold Rutledge. We were great friends after then despite me from the UK and them from NYC and Florida, Harold gave me his dog tags and I met Jerry again in 2004 when we met in the town of Trevieres that they liberated sadly both are now no longer with us RIP.

      My grandpa was also in the 2nd. I still have his patches and a lot of what he brought home. I wonder if he was in this photo as well.
      Did your father make it into Germany? My grandpa was shot before crossing the Rhine but did survive.

    • @williamward1805

      @@clintmccabe6904 First, thanks for the reply. I believe that he did but he passed away when I was only 4 months old in 1967. He never talked about the war with my mother. In my mid-20s I tried to research his service records but all of his records along with many other WW2 veterans were destroyed in a fire at the VA St Louis storage facility. All I have is the 2nd Id division post-war book that lists everything the division took part in and all the KIA names listed in the back by regiment. Also, I have a few photos of him in uniform. He was just turned 16 in November of 1941 and enlisted after Pearl Harbor in Philadelphia lying about his age that he was 18. That my mother did tell me about. I believe that he was in the 9th Inf regiment based on the KIA names in the book that he placed a dot next to. I wish researched back in the early 80s when I was in high school about his service. I might have been fortunate enough to have met some of his fellow servicemen and interviewed them for my records. Maybe someday you can go to Europe and trace your grandpa's steps. I know I want to see it. Last, your grandpa and my father, as well as all the men and women who served in WW2 armed forces, were a special generation that provided freedom from an autocratic leader and restored democracy.

      There were cliffs at the Eastern end of Omaha beach which gave shelter to men. These men are the 3rd battalion 16th regiment of the 1st division. The photo of the men at the top of the cliffs in in the video of Pointe du Hoc shows the 2 on the back of the helmet.

    Why didn't they boom it real heavy before the invasion??

    • @WalkingDday
      @WalkingDday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was a bombing raid on each beach. On Utah beach it wqs carried out by the 9th air force and on Omaha the 8th air force with B17 and B24 bombers. Utah beach was bombed by B26 marauders, medium bombers with 2 engines. They can fly at 1800 ft and flew along the coast with the targets in sight.
      On Omaha the bombers were at 10000 ft and flew perpendicular to the beach. As they couldn’t see the targets due ti the cloud cover, they were told to hesitate 22secs, ie a mile. So the bombs fell mainly inland.

    I recognized your theme music as coming from Gustav Holst: Mars which was once considered by George Lucas as music for his 'Star Wars' movie. Seems appropriate since 'Star Wars' was more influenced by WWII then anything else.

    • @WalkingDday
      @WalkingDday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s Mars the bringer of war. John Williams who did the Star wars theme and Jaws and many others just plagiarised the Valkeries by Wagner. He just did many variations on the theme.
