"Lack of funds meant it couldn't be pursued" It's a tank hull with a lad on top with a massive gun, how strapped for cash could the Irish military be??
90% of the Irish military budget goes to alcohol for the top brass, 9% for alcohol for everyone else, and the remaining 1% (about 13 Euro) goes to everything else.
Imagine a War Thunder event based around a vehicle like the HIMAG, where you have 3-4 vehicles to unlock all based on the same vehicle but configured differently for different roles. It could work in one of the crafting events, where you add different bits to get the different configs. If it wasn't too grindy I think it would be really fun.
That was sort of the April fools event, with the 3 tanks all sharing the same hull but different weapon systems, but that would be neat to see in a more historical setting
Would love to see something like the headless coachman or even just the irish comets as a premium. I'd even suck it up and accept it in the British tree XD
The TOS is not a prototype, it’s a standard tank in the Russian army for counter battery fire. It is colloquially known as a flamethrower because it fires thermobaric rockets.
The Headless Coachman sounds like a cheap TD in Wargame:Red Dragon also the weird Half-Track/Wheel-cum-track idea sounds like what I cooked up for a 30s light "tank"/heavy armored car thing out of sheer curiosity
Thanks for the detail about the Headless coachman, I hadn't had any luck researching Irish vehicles to add to the British tech tree up until that point, then I found 3; that one, an AML with a 25mm Bushmaster, and one with a fox armoured car turret with 30mm RARDEN
I just read this comment and i want to just inform you that they did add the FV721 Fox with the 30mm RARDEN into the game in this most recent update :>
As a funny "tank" my recomendation would be the Type 97 Ho-K it basicly was a based on the Hull of the Type 97 Chi-ha, but had the turred removed, but therefor a giant ram mounted on the front. Its use was to just ram the trees in the jugles to for examble make space for a airfield.
In relation to the last vehicle, I've been wondering why have most countries largely abandoned the concept of fast attack vehicles which are very light but using heavy punishment such as autocannons and low recoil anti tank weaponry. Why hasn't there been an effort to make a modernized T114 for example (stabiliser, autoloader, unmanned turret, thermals, perhaps even more cannons...)?
The countries replaced them with helicopters lmfao. Like not kidding, the modern TD is an attack chopper. Lightweight, fast firing atgms, very fast, it checks all the boxes.
@@marcusborderlands6177 That's an interesting idea. I would have thought that smaller economies, which can't afford expensive hardware, would at least attempt to develop something similar. Or maybe they just think replacing regular trucks is not worth the effort, like manh mentioned.
I'm a fan of the swedish UDES series. In particular, the UDES-19 and UDES-XX20. The UDES19 is basically a Marder IFV with an 10,5cm L7 in a remote turret. The XX20 is an articulated tracked vehicle based on the Bv206 fitted with the 12cm L44 mounted on the front part of the vehicle in a remote turret. It was also supposed to be able to raise and lower the entirety of the commanders cabin to give him an elevated view of the battlefield for quick surveyment.
My two favourite prototype tanks would be the Swedish Udes xx20. And Stridsvagn 103 'No Hands', which was an attempt to make the Strv 103 remote controlled during the 90's.
You should look into the Jagdpanzer 38 (Hetzer) prototypes that were submitted for production (meaning they were cleared to be produced until the reality of war slapped the designers in the face), such as the Ausf. D, one with a Kugelblitz turret as SPAA, and a proposal to mount a Panzer IV turret on top of it to keep both vehicles useful.
You should take a gander at the Swedish Kranvagn design, particularly the third variant with the 120mm cannon and improved engine, it's an actual tank that was semi built. The hull was completed but the turret never was, so they dumped the idea and went with the S-Tank instead. It's basically an IS-3 meets AMX-50 with thicker armour.
My fav prototype is by far the T-43. Basically a test version of the T-34-85 with a brand new chassis that was really, REALLY pushed to its limits, preventing any further improvements to be made. Also it looks like an uncanny T-34 with an oversized turret
People making fun of the Headless Coachman are forgetting that at one point the Irish stuck a merlin engine from a retired seafire in a churchill as a replacement engine.
Speak of strange Sherman variants... By the end of the Tito-Stalin split in the late 40s, Yugoslavia was looking to develop their own battle tank. However, being neither part of the west or eastern bloc, getting parts was really hard, so what they did was building prototypes based on the Sherman and T-34/85 One of these Prototypes was called the SO-122, which is a sherman that carries a 122mm gun similar to the soviet A-19 The strangeness didn't end there, as the project needed Shermans to do this in the first place, fortunately enough there was another project done by another group to engine swap the Shermans engine with that of the T-34/85, so by the mid 50s, they were working on an engine swapped M4 with a 122mm cannon. However, because of Stalins death and the negotiations between Yugoslavia and the USSR, as well as the obsolence of the M4 Chassis, the project was abandoned Yugoslavia was something else
The idea of simply adding armor to the bottom of the tank, reinforcing the tracks and suspension, and simply just driving over the mines without a care in the world is such a chad move honestly.
I don't believe a tank design can be 'weird'. There needs to be a reason why the designers made it like that. Like the Object 19. The design makes sense to me and it could be practical.
If you like doing these videos, make more of them, I’ve seen quite a bit of people in the previous video that wanted more of these videos. I don’t know where you find these prototypes though, can you tell us more about the process of finding these vehicles?
There are some "Weird" Hungarian tanks too. For example the V-4 amphibious light tank, made by British Engineer Miklos Strausler. I think it's worth checking out.
I like the Sholef, a cool artillery system based on the Merkava that could sling plenty of 155mm hate downrange with an automated loading system, plus a capacity for direct fire missions as well. But it never reached production, being set aside for an American artillery system.
Here's a strange prototype, The Object 279 with the АК Стрела gun(Ak-Strela). АК Стрела was a prototype gun that wanted to see what would happen if you send a projectile at 3000m/s. They never managed to reach 3000m/s but did go above 2000m/s with a 13-15 meters long gun. There was multiple variants, one with a 130mm and another with a 85mm. It also led to the development of Gas propellant charges and such. Also seem to be mounted on the Object 278 and maybe the 241 but I found nothing on these two. On one of the magazine talking about the project, they explained how they had to remake the Turret of the 279 with less armor to mount the massive gun. I remember seeing a photo of the project and yea, I thought the 279's gun was long but the АК Стрела was bloody ridiculous, Like the photo had about a third filled with the object 279 and the rest was just a long gun barrel. Sadly all the photos and references seems to be gone, I can't find anything when googling anymore. I think the forum that had all the photos got shut down.
@@thatsilverfella Oh so it’s fine that the Italians have a fast as hell car with the same weapon, but the British having a tank chassis with a recoiless rifle is too far.

Probably not much, since even though 7TP was giving trouble german tanks, we had not enough of these in armies.
Well it's not weird tank but will be a pain in everyone's asses it's the pz2j like the pz2 dak wasn't annoying enough this on has 80mm frontal armor and 50mm rear and side armor it was actually designed as a mine clearing tank
Hear me out: We should add the Sherman 105 Bulldozer into the game, it would be identical to the M4A3 q05 but it would have a BR of 3.3/3.7 (realistic) and would behave like the 2.7 105. The only change being that massive bulldozer blade being spaced armor, making most of the frontal hull inmune to enemies of a similar battle rating. Plus, it was much more common than the mineseeker shermans :)
I know it's your thing to do commentary over gameplay but with vids like this where you're talking about weird or rare vehicles it would be nice to see more of them. I think the pics fade in and out too quickly on this one.
