I loved the way Ruby's breakdown was handled, she has been building it up for a while and finally hit her breaking point. I know I have seen some people comment that her unyielding optimism is not believable but the reality is that Ruby's optimism is her shield like humor is for Yang and we see both of them break here. Just because someone is not vocalizing or displaying an emotion does not mean it is not there. Also I just noticed in this episode how different VirusPenny and Penny sound, it is striking to hear her go from her normal voice to a flat robotic one mid sentence.
The reason why we don't have much backstory for Nora, but we do for Ren, is because we know who Lie Ren is. We know who Ren and Nora is. But the reason we don't have her backstory is because, just like Nora, we don't entirely know who just Nora is.
I love that Ren/Nora has gone as it did. Didn't go the shallow "we're perfect now," after the confession route, and also didn't go the "I have to find myself and thus we can never see each other again" route that every other piece of fiction seems to goes for.
Juane knows what it's like to lose a partner AND a chance at love. He isn't going to do *anything* that would engager the chance for his two closest friends to have what he lost.
I feel bad for the Ace Ops, even Harriet at this point, they’re completely brainwashed by Ironwood, finally one of them had the courage to call him out on his bull crap and this whole situation for going too far, also I’m pretty sure that was Winter and Marrow on the elevator.
I'm curious to see that Ironwood video. Cause like, he was always a paranoid control freak, but he was also very human, and I'd argue he wasn't even really a bad guy until late V7. Many of his actions, however dictatorial they may have been, were understandable, even reasonable, in context. Like, we know in hindsight him bringing his army to Vale was a mistake, but in the short term, it actually did work, helping defend the city at the Breach. Ironwood's been a very interesting and well-done example of a shift from light to dark grey, and saying "Oh, they're just making him completely evil out of nowhere to make Team RWBY look good" _or_ "Nah fam he was always an evil fascist just waiting for his chance" remove the nuance that makes him so interesting, and just generally devalues his character arc.
@@kingraplhmativo5178 A "Tsundere" is a kind of anime character that acts all tough and is quick to get angry because they don't understand their own feelings nor do they know how to express their feelings to others. They are moody and can be mean and sarcastic, especially to those that they care about, but when they finally fall in love with or become friends with someone, they are are completely devoted to that person, even to sacrificing themselves to save that person.
I saw it coming a while back, his might makes right perspective has been in play for a while. I do wish it was more clearly displayed how much of it is his personality vs his semblance as it is very hard to tell in this and the last volume especially.
I've been watching since V4, and at least in the circles I keep there've been concerns that Ironwood was heading in a dictatorial direction even since then, when he started unilaterally embargoing Dust exports and closing all the borders - it certainly wasn't something out of the blue.

@@arch_2076 Same here, I love Ironwood's character as it shows how far you can push someone. He started out as well meaning and overly forceful and has step by step turned into what we see here. If Salem were around to comment on his mental state it would most likely be "just as I planned it"
this for me was probably one of the most emotional episode of the season. everything that had been building up was finally let out and let go. and it hit me too.
The Amity mission was still worth it, Ruby...warning the entire world was worth it....but there was no way the other Kingdoms could rally & deploy in time....it's just a logistical impossibility. That kind of massive movement of men & materiel isn't done in a day....it's just a shame Cinder damaged its stabilizers so it couldn't remain in high altitude low-Remnant orbit, keeping Global Comms up.
Winter reminds me of a character in one of my favorite book series. The character sees herself as a not good person, but when she just lets instinct/ her true character dictate her actions she always chooses to protect innocents, the helpless, and the ones close to her. Arryn, we love your long videos and your editor is so on point and awesome with the little sound effects and on screen notes. Hang in there, Arryn. The right job will open up to you at the correct time. You got this. Remember you’re awesome and I’ve said this before. I have enjoyed watching you grow over the years. Ironwood is too disconnected from reality to realize who is really loyal to him and who is just pretending to support his agenda.

Penny asking Ruby to kill her broke my heart, specially because it was actually a logical decision, they all knew it, you can see it on their faces, but I'm so glad it didn't happened Also I'm with you about Ren booping Nora, we waited for soooo long! And crwby managed their relationship perfectly, their scene was so incredibly mature and natural, I'm honestly impressed Lastly, I will protect Emmerald with my life, she deserves the world!
Honestly, I am willing to bet that Ironwood's semblance works by dampening or muting his emotions, allowing him to work on a purely logical level. It might be a semblance that triggers when he is under stress, growing stronger the longer he is under those conditions. If that's the case, it would work if Ren were able to see Ironwood and notice that he had no petals, no emotions at all. Then when they engage him in battle and break his aura, his emotions will come flooding back, overwhelming him all at once. Just a thought.
Except part of the problem is that he hasn’t been thinking logically at all, his fear has ruled him the entire time though he refuses to acknowledge it. Mettle allows him to focus on a goal by blocking other things out, including pain or emotion, but in order to have that goal you still have to make a decision first. I think that’s something a lot of people who have misinterpreted his semblance have tripped up on is that Mettle only kicks in AFTER he makes a choice, and that his choices are a reflection of his current values, something that his semblance can’t control.
@@BlueButterfly015 The trouble is that his is a passive semblance with no real cues unless you know exactly what to watch for (eyes change appearance) he does tend to be less talkative during it but that is not a 100% tell. It also only amplifies what is already there so it can be easy to treat it as him just being himself.
As a note, Winter made another choice. But unlike the first 2, which could be argued as her thinking that they were noncommittal and passive, this one was direct and interventive. She decided to save Marrow, even after Ironwood had decided that he should die. Therefore, she is not simply deciding to let someone protect themselves and their own, she is not simply deciding to do the same, she has decided to oppose Ironwood directly indirectly. The results of this choice, much like her other two, will no doubt be extreme and far reaching, controlling the very direction of the story, and will, at least I believe, be the catalyst by which Ironwood falls. Because by saving Marrow, she has made it so Ironwood now has more enemies, which will cause him even more stress, but also she has fractured the AceOps, and will no doubt embolden team RWBY and co to even further acts. The results of all of this will very likely have Elm defecting in some form, though to a most likely lesser degree, and Harriet becoming even more unstable with her anger, till the point where she simply snaps and tries to rampage. Vine could be convinced with the proper reasoning, but even if he couldn't be, he would be little comfort to Ironwood, who by that point would see him as a potential liability instead of asset. All of this would cause Ironwoods mental state to deteriorate even further and faster, till it reached the complete breaking point. And all of this, because Winter Schnee decided she didn't want someone to die, and actually made a move.
I'm so worried about Ren now, like he's gone through his emotional arc and they've admitted they love eachother but Nora's arc is that she needs to go through hers alone....I'm worried they're gonna hit us with a pyrrha X Jaune situation that she'll level up once her support crutch love is gone.... (I hope they don't! cus he's one of my faves and my fave ship but I'm worried 😅)
EruptionFang theorized once that Nora may die at Tyrian's hands and in return, Ren would either succumb to sadness or suicide. :'( that would be messed up but it would make sense for their love to die together.
The tragedy of #Renora 's origin is neither of their faults, they were orphaned at the same time and have always had to rely on each other....but Nora has finally recognized this has made her co-dependent and she has no sense of self without him...a problem Arryn wisely notes here.
I think Oscar told them he got shot in Chapter 1 once he made it back to the bar/inn. He says it to them but the conversation scene starts right after he tells them with him saying how he confronted Ironwood at the vault and that he thought it wouldnt go that badly.
-Chapter 11: Risk RWBY quote of the chapter _“Trust is…risk.” (Weiss)_ A lot of emotional content was put into this chapter. But giving that this is the penultimate chapter of this volume, it’s not a surprise. -Anxiety within Atlas Something of note was that despite the destruction of the Whale Grimm, other Grimm was still present at Atlas, so the war is not over yet. Furthermore, it will draw even more due to fear of the citizens of Atlas and Mantle considering Ironwood’s ultimatum. It goes without saying that Ruby’s words in her speech were true; that Ironwood cannot be trusted. And nothing emphasize that further than how his troops react to him. Even the Ace-Ops are divided further by his action. Elm is concerned (with a slight change in attitude), but still believes in Ironwood; Vine remains the stoic personality, and Harriet doesn’t seem to care either way. It is unclear whether they believed that Ironwood would carry out his plan, but that was confirmed when Winter asked about it that he wasn’t bluffing. Causing Marrow to snap… Given everything that is happening, it is no surprise that he reacted the way he did. But his upset blinded him to the real danger of Ironwood himself, forgetting that Ironwood had shot at the councilman (likely killing him) in view of everyone else. Fortunately, Winter saved his life, showing that she too saw what Ironwood had become, but had to discreet about how to deal with it (ergo the punch). It is odd that Ironwood still had Winter by his side after the events of the previous chapter, but it may be that Ironwood is so fixated on his plan that he may not be noticing it, at least not yet. He has an odd way of remembering certain details as the worse times.
-Thus Kindly I Scatter… Ruby’s breakdown truly shows how dire the situation had become. Emerald’s comment pretty much voiced it. Too much was happening for her to deal with right now (her pained groan a clear indication) as more and more problems seem to hit her one after another. Granted, this isn’t the first time Ruby had been…less than optimistic, but it has gotten her past the breaking point. And it is largely because of the possible fate of her mother and with it, Ruby realizes that she could very likely become just like The Hound. Which I’d imagine, at her core, terrifies her… This time, it is Yang to help comfort her, all the while having to feel the same pain that Ruby must be feeling (relatively speaking). She even helped Ruby get back on track by telling her that her plan didn’t work well either, which leads to the theme of the chapter.
-Ren and Nora This scene truly showcases the depth and growth of Ren and Nora’s relationship. Their separation at the start of the volume, plus the tension in the previous volume, was honestly good for them in order to truly understand each other’s feelings (Subtle, Jaune. Real subtle). Ren was stressed with not being good enough for his team (and Nora in particularly), while Nora was distressed in not knowing who she is without Ren. Even more so now that we understand her from her background where she could have had major abandonment issues, but it was greatly diminished because she always had Ren at her side. But with that comes the reverse effect of her dependence on Ren’s presence. So now they have come to the point of their relationship where they have to learn how grow, in different ways. Ren has already started (with his semblance helping him greatly in that endeavor) while Nora has to discover who she is alone. What is the sweetest part is that they are both doing that _because_ they love each other. For them, nothing will change that. Boop ^_^
-Wrath and composure Qrow’s anger was on full effect in this episode. When previously he was mainly distraught and depressed, now that he has escaped from prison, he wants to vent his pain and hurt on taking out Ironwood, something that Robyn directly points out. An even greater point she points out is that he had been hurting for a long time, showing her compassion. She also points up that there are bigger issues involved (the existence of Mantle) and that there is too much at risk in the event of failure. And finally, she brings his mind on the fact of the type of Huntsman he is. Ultimately, her cool and direct manner was needed to settle his current impulsive mindset. I really try not to bring the ships into this, as everyone have their favorite pairing(s) and often enough, those pairings clash (with Arkos and Renora as exceptions), but I really can’t ignore this particular one. Their conversation was cut with the entrance of whomever it is coming out of the elevator (likely Winter and Marrow). Hm. Now that’s an interesting team. Qrow, Robyn, Winter and Marrow…
-Fighting the virus Sometimes, you’d think the story of the man with two souls was meant to Ozpin, but it also seems to apply to Penny as well; the part of her as a machine verses the part of her that is a living being and a Maiden. Currently, there was a way for her to dismiss her machine part that is affected by a virus thanks to Jaune (1. His semblance is _really_ useful. 2. Is this a possible ship?), but ultimately, as Nora says, she has to go to the vault.
-Changing Sides Emerald’s turn seemed a bit sudden, but not at all surprising. With the three closest to her no longer around (Cinder, Mercury and Hazel), not to mention that she had betrayed Salem (which may basically be a death sentence), she really had nowhere else to go. If not for Oscar encouraging her to stay with them (repeatedly), she would have more than likely just find an airship and leave the area (and the war) entirely. And her words to Ruby added healing to a shaken hero more so than she may have even known. Of course, this change will come in direct conflict with her devotion to Cinder, so that will be something she will have to deal with soon.
-Understanding Ozpin’s words to the team, letting them know the mistakes/errors he made was more impacting because they understood fully his reasoning because of the experiences they had, especially now during the heat of the war. As Yang spoke to Ruby earlier on, things don’t always happen the way things are planned. And with this understanding, Ozpin is asking for that risk once again. And this whole scene shows the needed unity that is essential for this team. _”That’s why you lost against team RWBY. You, you try to fight how you feel about each other, so you’ll never truly work as a team.” (Ren)_ Now with that clarity, they are now setting up to deal with Ironwood from destroying Mantle and help Penny. But in addition with that problem, Cinder, Watts and Neo are set up their own plan. How will this develop? Edit: Of greater note was Penny's willingness to sacrifice herself to stop the virus and prevent the power of the Maiden from falling into the wrong hands, even willing for Ruby to take the power and be a Maiden herself, further showing her humanity. I read this from another comment, and I felt really silly for not noticing this, even though I realized a part of it; why Oscar was more friendly to Emerald than the others; a reference to _The Wizard of Oz_ and the Emerald City.

Okay. Thoughts on Nora and her family. One of the interesting things that I noticed was that Nora said her mother ran from the Grimm and then Ren found her. That suggests to me that Nora's mother was probably in the village when the Nuckelavee attacked, and she fled, leaving Nora behind. But Nora was eating food from the trash. Why? Well, what if Nora's mother was a drunkard or was abusive? I mean, she abandoned Nora, so obviously there wasn't much maternal instinct there. But if she was wasting all her money on booze rather than food and shelter, then Nora would have been filthy - and part of her filth would be crawling around in the trash looking for food because she was starving. And if Nora's mother was *abusive* then she was neglecting Nora, and Nora turned to the streets to try and survive. Again, when the Nuckelavee struck, Nora's mother ditched her. And then Ren came along. And Ren was there for her. One other thing to note is what Lie Ren's father said to him upon seeing the situation. He was going to talk to someone. Well, he may have realized that Nora was being neglected. He wasn't going to the town guard or anything to warn about Grimm activity. He was reporting child neglect with Nora. Who knows. Maybe in a timeline where the Nuckelavee never struck... maybe Li and An Ren would have taken Nora in. Just some food for thought.
I wonder if eventually Noras mom will show up as a character, much like how Raven did? Probably not in this volume or maybe even not the next, but it’s interesting how they made that her back story, instead of just having them be dead. Like you said it could just be about her emotional growth, but if so it’s very very subtle. On a separate note, on line with your thinking of Summoned Salem, do you think that one of the Schnees (either mom or Whitley) will be able to summon the hound? Considering it’s mostly Grimm, which is what she summons. Also I loved the Boop, so so much. Aaa! the feels
can you believe there are reactors who think Nora's mom was still around when Ren found her??? had that been the case, their story would have looked QUITE different. it has quite emphatically been Just Them Two since that moment, until they got to Beacon.
I never shipped Jaune and Penny before, but after this episode I imagine this cute little thing happening where Jaune and Penny are just holding hands all the time wherever they go so that when Penny has the virus bother her she can just squeeze Jaune’s hand and he can give her an aura boost, and because they’re holding hands all the time they’ll eventually start liking each other 😊 I that’s so freaking cute yo I’m a newfound Jaune/Penny shipper 😆 is there even a ship name for these two??? I don’t think so lol

I actually think it's a sign for Ren instead. He's had so much development recently and him dying would force a lot of development for Nora. Here's to hoping they both make it out alive this volume.
Ugh .. there are way too many " JNPR Death Theory" triggers popping up again. :( I will cling to the hope (We need hope as Yang said) that Emerald will join them. Forming team "JRNE" (Journey, which fits them all four perfectly), for the dark clouds above them to dissipate.
You know during the week, I saw someone post about one of the FNDM’s biggest misconceptions about the show. That if a character receives any significant character development means death flags. But RWBY is not that kind of show, they don’t kill characters off left and right without reason and Pyrrha was the exception, not the rule. If anything, character development more likely means we are not done with this character yet.
I suspect you are correct. At least in this case of Ren and Nora I sincerely pray you are. As for the whole "death flag" thing it is probably due to some uncomfortable similarities with the members of Team JNPR. They all four are based on characters who inevitably end up with a mildly annoying case of being .. well .. dead. Both Pyrrha and Jaune one one hand and Ren and Nora on the other hand were dependent on the other. In both cases they had trouble figuring out who they can be by themselves. Jaune could only figure himself out and shine when Pyrrha made the strategic error of getting herself reduced to barbeque filling .. Nora just admitted that she has no idea how to figure herself out and shine .. until ...... some circumstance really forces her to. Jaune at one time became angry, hostile and pushed Pyrrha away because he felt angry, foolish, inadequate and incompetent. Ren did exactly the same thing with Nora. When the one pair were finally ready to admit not only to themselves but to the other that they really liked each other they were torn apart permanently. These two have arrived at the point where they can finally admit to the other that they genuinely like each other. At the same point? "Red-Head" sounds uncomfortably close to "Red-Shirt" in this case XD And so on, it is the little similarities that makes one unconfortable. And while you are probably correct about it being a "big misconception" or "seeing to much in it" it is the tiny little niggling details that make one break out in "cold sweats" at some times. :)
Possibly. But it had to have some sort of great effect on her life, and mentality. At least that's what I remember, enemies that had some important effect on them as a person can be summoned. So if the limit of her experience from it was it scaring the shit out of her then probably not. But I think we can all agree that it was definitely more impactful than just that. Though we still don't know if they can summon people, so who knows.
First of all, sorry for possible mistakes and clumsy text, English isn't my native... And you are not going to like my opinion, people, but I don't share and don't understand everyone's enthusiasm about this episode. Rooster Teeth getting worse and worse with most crucial part of story - character's consistency and adequacy. This problem of OOC was in the show before, but now it's just breaking suspension of disbelief for me. Characters exercise feelings, speeches and actions that are completely impossible for their previously established personalities in their current circumstances. Previous controversial transformation of Ironwood aside, but here this happened far more obviously and with everyone at once. Hot-headed to the point of hysterical, agressive Robyn, who ambushed transports, hated general with all her heart even before his current madeness, rushed to attack Clover back when he was just calmly explaining arrest situation to Qrow - here she is suddenly the voice of reason and pacifism. Teens in love suddenly discuss and analyze their hidden emotions and multilayered motivation through some obscure freudian-style western pop-psychology. Along the lines "I pushed you aside on the outside because actually deep inside I was angry at myself for even deeper fear of holding team back" or "I love you all my life so much that I'm starting so somehow feel like it's not OK, not a normal and welcome result of shared journey, I don't know a Real Me, and I need to figure it out alone"... Which is not a thing, not actual thoughts and feelings someone could ever have, especially someone at their age and in their situation, and you'll never hear such phrases in relationships, until it's relationships between therapistis who are trolling each other. Stressed-out Ember who is slow to form connections and fiercly loyal to them due to her hard lonely life, who just lost one relatively close person and was separated from another one, who found herself among semi-hostile people she was OK to see dead or suffering until now - suddenly gives them shy pep-talk tsundere-style. War-traumatized children amidst chaos and desperation in their important hour before tragedy - found time to have another long philosophical discussion on matters of hope and trust (which topic is fine and in-character for RWBY on itself, but AGAIN and NOW?). And everything ends in sitting yoga circle of positivity, mutual reassurance and out-of-place creepely similar Stepford smiles... I can't get why all of you like and praise this strange turn of show( And yes, I'm going to copy this whining to other reactors to hear from their viewers, hope it isn't against local etics or something, I saw other comments doubled in similar fashion before.
You should consider the possibility that you could be Over-Analyzing this thing. That is a not recommendable. It only gives you a migraine. :) If I may borrow a quote from Russel Crowe ... "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!!"

I'm curious to see that Ironwood video. Cause like, he was always a paranoid control freak, but he was also very human, and I'd argue he wasn't even really a bad guy until late V7. Many of his actions, however dictatorial they may have been, were understandable, even reasonable, in context. Like, we know in hindsight him bringing his army to Vale was a mistake, but in the short term, it actually did work, helping defend the city at the Breach.
Ironwood's been a very interesting and well-done example of a shift from light to dark grey, and saying "Oh, they're just making him completely evil out of nowhere to make Team RWBY look good" _or_ "Nah fam he was always an evil fascist just waiting for his chance" remove the nuance that makes him so interesting, and just generally devalues his character arc.

I saw it coming a while back, his might makes right perspective has been in play for a while. I do wish it was more clearly displayed how much of it is his personality vs his semblance as it is very hard to tell in this and the last volume especially.
I've been watching since V4, and at least in the circles I keep there've been concerns that Ironwood was heading in a dictatorial direction even since then, when he started unilaterally embargoing Dust exports and closing all the borders - it certainly wasn't something out of the blue.

@@arch_2076 Same here, I love Ironwood's character as it shows how far you can push someone. He started out as well meaning and overly forceful and has step by step turned into what we see here. If Salem were around to comment on his mental state it would most likely be "just as I planned it"

The Amity mission was still worth it, Ruby...warning the entire world was worth it....but there was no way the other Kingdoms could rally & deploy in time....it's just a logistical impossibility. That kind of massive movement of men & materiel isn't done in a day....it's just a shame Cinder damaged its stabilizers so it couldn't remain in high altitude low-Remnant orbit, keeping Global Comms up.

Winter reminds me of a character in one of my favorite book series. The character sees herself as a not good person, but when she just lets instinct/ her true character dictate her actions she always chooses to protect innocents, the helpless, and the ones close to her. Arryn, we love your long videos and your editor is so on point and awesome with the little sound effects and on screen notes. Hang in there, Arryn. Honestly, I am willing to bet that Ironwood's semblance works by dampening or muting his emotions, allowing him to work on a purely logical level. It might be a semblance that triggers when he is under stress, growing stronger the longer he is under those conditions. If that's the case, it would work if Ren were able to see Ironwood and notice that he had no petals, no emotions at all. Then when they engage him in battle and break his aura, his emotions will come flooding back, overwhelming him all at once. Just a thought.

Except part of the problem is that he hasn’t been thinking logically at all, his fear has ruled him the entire time though he refuses to acknowledge it. Mettle allows him to focus on a goal by blocking other things out, including pain or emotion, but in order to have that goal you still have to make a decision first. I think that’s something a lot of people who have misinterpreted his semblance have tripped up on is that Mettle only kicks in AFTER he makes a choice, and that his choices are a reflection of his current values, something that his semblance can’t control.
@@BlueButterfly015 The trouble is that his is a passive semblance with no real cues unless you know exactly what to watch for (eyes change appearance) he does tend to be less talkative during it but that is not a 100% tell. It also only amplifies what is already there so it can be easy to treat it as him just being himself.

As a note, Winter made another choice. But unlike the first 2, which could be argued as her thinking that they were noncommittal and passive, this one was direct and interventive. She decided to save Marrow, even after Ironwood had decided that he should die. Therefore, she is not simply deciding to let someone protect themselves and their own, she is not simply deciding to do the same, she has decided to oppose Ironwood directly indirectly. The results of this choice, much like her other two, will no doubt be extreme and far reaching, controlling the very direction of the story, and will, at least I believe, be the catalyst by which Ironwood falls. Because by saving Marrow, she has made it so Ironwood now has more enemies, which will cause him even more stress, but also she has fractured the AceOps, and will no doubt embolden team RWBY and co to even further acts. The results of all of this will very likely have Elm defecting in some form, though to a most likely lesser degree, and Harriet becoming even more unstable with her anger, till the point where she simply snaps and tries to rampage. Vine could be convinced with the proper reasoning, but even if he couldn't be, he would be little comfort to Ironwood, who by that point would see him as a potential liability instead of asset. All of this would cause Ironwoods mental state to deteriorate even further and faster, till it reached the complete breaking point.
And all of this, because Winter Schnee decided she didn't want someone to die, and actually made a move.
I'm so worried about Ren now, like he's gone through his emotional arc and they've admitted they love eachother but Nora's arc is that she needs to go through hers alone....I'm worried they're gonna hit us with a pyrrha X Jaune situation that she'll level up once her support crutch love is gone....

I think Oscar told them he got shot in Chapter 1 once he made it back to the bar/inn. He says it to them but the conversation scene starts right after he tells them with him saying how he confronted Ironwood at the vault and that he thought it wouldnt go that badly.

A lot of emotional content was put into this chapter. But giving that this is the penultimate chapter of this volume, it’s not a surprise.
-Anxiety within Atlas
Something of note was that despite the destruction of the Whale Grimm, other Grimm was still present at Atlas, so the war is not over yet. Furthermore, it will draw even more due to fear of the citizens of Atlas and Mantle considering Ironwood’s ultimatum. It goes without saying that Ruby’s words in her speech were true; that Ironwood cannot be trusted. And nothing emphasize that further than how his troops react to him.
Even the Ace-Ops are divided further by his action. Elm is concerned (with a slight change in attitude), but still believes in Ironwood; Vine remains the stoic personality, and Harriet doesn’t seem to care either way. It is unclear whether they believed that Ironwood would carry out his plan, but that was confirmed when Winter asked about it that he wasn’t bluffing.
Causing Marrow to snap…
Given everything that is happening, it is no surprise that he reacted the way he did. But his upset blinded him to the real danger of Ironwood himself, forgetting that Ironwood had shot at the councilman (likely killing him) in view of everyone else. Fortunately, Winter saved his life, showing that she too saw what Ironwood had become, but had to discreet about how to deal with it (ergo the punch). It is odd that Ironwood still had Winter by his side after the events of the previous chapter, but it may be that Ironwood is so fixated on his plan that he may not be noticing it, at least not yet. He has an odd way of remembering certain details as the worse times.
-Thus Kindly I Scatter…
Ruby’s breakdown truly shows how dire the situation had become. Emerald’s comment pretty much voiced it. Too much was happening for her to deal with right now (her pained groan a clear indication) as more and more problems seem to hit her one after another. Granted, this isn’t the first time Ruby had been…less than optimistic, but it has gotten her past the breaking point. And it is largely because of the possible fate of her mother and with it, Ruby realizes that she could very likely become just like The Hound.
Which I’d imagine, at her core, terrifies her…
This time, it is Yang to help comfort her, all the while having to feel the same pain that Ruby must be feeling (relatively speaking). She even helped Ruby get back on track by telling her that her plan didn’t work well either, which leads to the theme of the chapter.
-Ren and Nora
This scene truly showcases the depth and growth of Ren and Nora’s relationship. Their separation at the start of the volume, plus the tension in the previous volume, was honestly good for them in order to truly understand each other’s feelings (Subtle, Jaune. Real subtle). Ren was stressed with not being good enough for his team (and Nora in particularly), while Nora was distressed in not knowing who she is without Ren. Even more so now that we understand her from her background where she could have had major abandonment issues, but it was greatly diminished because she always had Ren at her side. But with that comes the reverse effect of her dependence on Ren’s presence.
So now they have come to the point of their relationship where they have to learn how grow, in different ways. Ren has already started (with his semblance helping him greatly in that endeavor) while Nora has to discover who she is alone. What is the sweetest part is that they are both doing that _because_ they love each other. For them, nothing will change that.

-Wrath and composure
Qrow’s anger was on full effect in this episode. When previously he was mainly distraught and depressed, now that he has escaped from prison, he wants to vent his pain and hurt on taking out Ironwood, something that Robyn directly points out. An even greater point she points out is that he had been hurting for a long time, showing her compassion. She also points up that there are bigger issues involved (the existence of Mantle) and that there is too much at risk in the event of failure. And finally, she brings his mind on the fact of the type of Huntsman he is. Ultimately, her cool and direct manner was needed to settle his current impulsive mindset.
I really try not to bring the ships into this, as everyone have their favorite pairing(s) and often enough, those pairings clash (with Arkos and Renora as exceptions), but I really can’t ignore this particular one.
Their conversation was cut with the entrance of whomever it is coming out of the elevator (likely Winter and Marrow). Hm. Now that’s an interesting team. Qrow, Robyn, Winter and Marrow…
-Fighting the virus
Sometimes, you’d think the story of the man with two souls was meant to Ozpin, but it also seems to apply to Penny as well; the part of her as a machine verses the part of her that is a living being and a Maiden. Currently, there was a way for her to dismiss her machine part that is affected by a virus thanks to Jaune (1. His semblance is _really_ useful. 2. Is this a possible ship?), but ultimately, as Nora says, she has to go to the vault.
-Changing Sides
Emerald’s turn seemed a bit sudden, but not at all surprising. With the three closest to her no longer around (Cinder, Mercury and Hazel), not to mention that she had betrayed Salem (which may basically be a death sentence), she really had nowhere else to go. If not for Oscar encouraging her to stay with them (repeatedly), she would have more than likely just find an airship and leave the area (and the war) entirely. And her words to Ruby added healing to a shaken hero more so than she may have even known. Of course, this change will come in direct conflict with her devotion to Cinder, so that will be something she will have to deal with soon.
-Understanding
Ozpin’s words to the team, letting them know the mistakes/errors he made was more impacting because they understood fully his reasoning because of the experiences they had, especially now during the heat of the war. As Yang spoke to Ruby earlier on, things don’t always happen the way things are planned. And with this understanding, Ozpin is asking for that risk once again. And this whole scene shows the needed unity that is essential for this team.
_”That’s why you lost against team RWBY. You, you try to fight how you feel about each other, so you’ll never truly work as a team.” (Ren)_
Now with that clarity, they are now setting up to deal with Ironwood from destroying Mantle and help Penny. But in addition with that problem, Cinder, Watts and Neo are set up their own plan. How will this develop?
Edit: Of greater note was Penny's willingness to sacrifice herself to stop the virus and prevent the power of the Maiden from falling into the wrong hands, even willing for Ruby to take the power and be a Maiden herself, further showing her humanity.
I read this from another comment, and I felt really silly for not noticing this, even though I realized a part of it; why Oscar was more friendly to Emerald than the others; a reference to _The Wizard of Oz_ and the Emerald City.

Okay. Thoughts on Nora and her family. One of the interesting things that I noticed was that Nora said her mother ran from the Grimm and then Ren found her. That suggests to me that Nora's mother was probably in the village when the Nuckelavee attacked, and she fled, leaving Nora behind.
But Nora was eating food from the trash. Why?
Well, what if Nora's mother was a drunkard or was abusive? I mean, she abandoned Nora, so obviously there wasn't much maternal instinct there. But if she was wasting all her money on booze rather than food and shelter, then Nora would have been filthy - and part of her filth would be crawling around in the trash looking for food because she was starving. And if Nora's mother was *abusive* then she was neglecting Nora, and Nora turned to the streets to try and survive. Again, when the Nuckelavee struck, Nora's mother ditched her. And then Ren came along. And Ren was there for her.
One other thing to note is what Lie Ren's father said to him upon seeing the situation. He was going to talk to someone. Well, he may have realized that Nora was being neglected. He wasn't going to the town guard or anything to warn about Grimm activity. He was reporting child neglect with Nora.
Who knows. Maybe in a timeline where the Nuckelavee never struck... maybe Li and An Ren would have taken Nora in. Just some food for thought.

I wonder if eventually Noras mom will show up as a character, much like how Raven did? Probably not in this volume or maybe even not the next, but it’s interesting how they made that her back story, instead of just having them be dead. Like you said it could just be about her emotional growth, but if so it’s very very subtle.
On a separate note, on line with your thinking of Summoned Salem, do you think that one of the Schnees (either mom or Whitley) will be able to summon the hound? Considering it’s mostly Grimm, which is what she summons.

I never shipped Jaune and Penny before, but after this episode I imagine this cute little thing happening where Jaune and Penny are just holding hands all the time wherever they go so that when Penny has the virus bother her she can just squeeze Jaune’s hand and he can give her an aura boost, and because they’re holding hands all the time they’ll eventually start liking each other 😊

above them to dissipate.
You know during the week, I saw someone post about one of the FNDM’s biggest misconceptions about the show. That if a character receives any significant character development means death flags. But RWBY is not that kind of show, they don’t kill characters off left and right without reason and Pyrrha was the exception, not the rule. If anything, character development more likely means we are not done with this character yet.
I suspect you are correct. At least in this case of Ren and Nora I sincerely pray you are.
As for the whole "death flag" thing it is probably due to some uncomfortable similarities
with the members of Team JNPR.
They all four are based on characters who inevitably end up with a mildly annoying case
of being .. well .. dead.
Both Pyrrha and Jaune one one hand and Ren and Nora on the other hand were dependent
on the other. In both cases they had trouble figuring out who they can be by themselves.
Jaune could only figure himself out and shine when Pyrrha made the strategic error of getting
herself reduced to barbeque filling .. Nora just admitted that she has no idea how to figure
herself out and shine .. until ...... some circumstance really forces her to.
Jaune at one time became angry, hostile and pushed Pyrrha away because he felt angry,
foolish, inadequate and incompetent. Ren did exactly the same thing with Nora.
When the one pair were finally ready to admit not only to themselves but to the other that they
really liked each other they were torn apart permanently. These two have arrived at the point
where they can finally admit to the other that they genuinely like each other. At the same point?
"Red-Head" sounds uncomfortably close to "Red-Shirt" in this case XD
And so on, it is the little similarities that makes one unconfortable. And while you are probably
correct about it being a "big misconception" or "seeing to much in it" it is the tiny little niggling
details that make one break out in "cold sweats" at some times. :)
Can Willow summon the Hound now that she and Whitley killed it?
Possibly. But it had to have some sort of great effect on her life, and mentality. At least that's what I remember, enemies that had some important effect on them as a person can be summoned. So if the limit of her experience from it was it scaring the shit out of her then probably not. But I think we can all agree that it was definitely more impactful than just that. Though we still don't know if they can summon people, so who knows.

First of all, sorry for possible mistakes and clumsy text, English isn't my native... And you are not going to like my opinion, people, but I don't share and don't understand everyone's enthusiasm about this episode. Rooster Teeth getting worse and worse with most crucial part of story - character's consistency and adequacy. This problem of OOC was in the show before, but now it's just breaking suspension of disbelief for me. Characters exercise feelings, speeches and actions that are completely impossible for their previously established personalities in their current circumstances. Previous controversial transformation of Ironwood aside, but here this happened far more obviously and with everyone at once. Hot-headed to the point of hysterical, agressive Robyn, who ambushed transports, hated general with all her heart even before his current madeness, rushed to attack Clover back when he was just calmly explaining arrest situation to Qrow - here she is suddenly the voice of reason and pacifism. Teens in love suddenly discuss and analyze their hidden emotions and multilayered motivation through some obscure freudian-style western pop-psychology. Along the lines "I pushed you aside on the outside because actually deep inside I was angry at myself for even deeper fear of holding team back" or "I love you all my life so much that I'm starting so somehow feel like it's not OK, not a normal and welcome result of shared journey, I don't know a Real Me, and I need to figure it out alone"... Which is not a thing, not actual thoughts and feelings someone could ever have, especially someone at their age and in their situation, and you'll never hear such phrases in relationships, until it's relationships between therapistis who are trolling each other. Stressed-out Ember who is slow to form connections and fiercly loyal to them due to her hard lonely life, who just lost one relatively close person and was separated from another one, who found herself among semi-hostile people she was OK to see dead or suffering until now - suddenly gives them shy pep-talk tsundere-style. War-traumatized children amidst chaos and desperation in their important hour before tragedy - found time to have another long philosophical discussion on matters of hope and trust (which topic is fine and in-character for RWBY on itself, but AGAIN and NOW?). And everything ends in sitting yoga circle of positivity, mutual reassurance and out-of-place creepely similar Stepford smiles... I can't get why all of you like and praise this strange turn of show( And yes, I'm going to copy this whining to other reactors to hear from their viewers, hope it isn't against local etics or something, I saw other comments doubled in similar fashion before.
You should consider the possibility that you could be Over-Analyzing this thing.
