The humiliation my siblings and I had to go through was nearly unbearable when attending schools in these wealthy farming communities where kids came to school dressed well and smelling good. It was customary to hear nasty smelly Mexicans. The best part about school was that some of the teachers and teachers' aids did show compassion, allowing us to sleep in class or even fix our hair. Working like this had its positives because it pushed us to become something more. My brothers all went to college, and I went to beauty school. It's so nice to work in a temperature-controlled environment. I hope some changes are made. I hope they allow migrants to work legally and pay them higher wages. Migrants will make the income they deserve, and perhaps college and high school kids will be encouraged to do these jobs in the summer. Farmers are essential, but what are they without the workers?

Plus more americans should get the hell out of the overpopulated cities and have a small place and grow their own orchard and garden foods. 95% of Americans used to live on a family farm, now it's only 5% or less ! what the hell happened ? all the immigrants went to cities and many americans left thier farms. people are just too stupid .
There are plenty of homeless people in Seattle and elsewhere who could work. They don't even try to recruit Americans because their goal is to low ball people on wages and provide them with nasty living conditions. Here in Florida they pay $10 an hour to pick oranges in the heat and cram 100 people into a shed as "room and board" I have known a few Americans that worked there and said they won't do it again (mostly spanish speakers). It's primarily immigrants that do it though. People can live on $10 an hour in Mexico but the wages they pay here its like work a full time job and live homeless type of wages- and its also back breaking labor in hot weather. This nonsense they put up about room and board and $14 an hour if that were the case I would be working on those farms. You have to realize that this puts many Americans in a position either be unemployed or work full time and be homeless. A good compromise would be maybe let about half or 3/4 of the workers be immigrants and have the farm actually hire a few Americans at a reasonable wage. This was what Trump was pushing for when he still gave out work visas but limited them- which would force farms to push up wages. Nonetheless with NAFTA they import cheap fruit and vegetables from Mexico tariff free.
@Jay Kemme If Trump knew how tariffs worked, the farmers would not need to be subsidised or to use the proper term get welfare. In doing so, I learned much about work ethic; the value of money, and believing in myself. What I'm saying to the farmers and Americans, is that if the U.S. adults don't want those jobs, there must still be many teenagers that want to earn money by harvesting even! If not, then shame on Americans for being lazy or think that job is beneath them. With few people to harvest, Americans will see a rise in prices, or no food at all, as this woman in the video says they wasted 20 acres of food because there was no one to harvest it ! I don’t hire illegals and will adjust my buying habits so farmers can hire legally. That means I may pay more or find a substitute product. To accuse Trump supporters of causing this problem or supporting it is ridiculous. Many foreign workers come on work visas which is great because it’s legal and controlled. They can work cheaper because their cost of living where they come from is less. I’ve traveled for work in my business and it’s the same thing on a smaller scale. To try to draw a parallel with slavery and Jim Crow is demagoguery and does nothing to advance or solve the problem. Many farmers I know routinely buy crop insurance and sell portions of their crop on futures to ensure the price. That's right! I'm in my 60's and my first job was at age three and a half, gathering chicken eggs & laying down clean straw for the rancher who's land we lived on. I got paid in eggs, but that kept me, my mom, and my sister from starving. Between then & age twelve, I washed dishes at school so my sister & I could eat lunch & I could buy our school supplies. I cleaned houses, & washed windows at a gas station on the way home from school so my mother could put gas in the car. Eventually, I started my own laundry/ironing/mending business in junior high & high school during the school months, & also did babysitting nights & weekends. During the summer's, I picked fruits & vegetables on farms, did my laundry/ sewing business, & babysitting. Kids these days, don't have a clue about hard work. But some of that is the result of over-regulation & zoning laws. Kids today can't even put up a lemonade stand, mow lawns, or work a newspaper route because of too many stupid laws. It's not so easy for kids to be entrepreneurs, or find jobs to do, and many parents nowadays don't require their kids to do any work around the house either. So those here claiming that White Americans have always been lazy, or don't want to work, or that this country was built on the backs of minorities, are either racist, bigoted, or lived privileged lives & haven't got a clue. My Irish-Scot ancestors were enslaved & brought to these shores to labor under harsh conditions, as were many White people. Blacks, do not have the corner on slavery. Slavery has been a part of every culture down through the ages. Kamala Harris' G-Grandfather, bought, owned & sold White Irish-Scots on his Jamaican plantations. He was a key figure in starting that whole trade. My family has always worked hard, so no one can tell me that White Americans don't want to work. Granted, many young people today don't know what real hard work is, but there are lazy people in all races. As others have said here, farmers stopped hiring American workers in favor of immigrant workers willing to work for cheap wages. The farmers created this situation. When I picked on the farms as a teen, I didn't even think about what I was getting paid, I was just glad to have a job & we didn't complain about such things back then. Now, it's impossible for a teen to get a job picking produce on a farm. It's odd to me that, as you heard the man say, it's considered skilled labor, so not just anybody can expect to be hired. I don't know how picking fruit could be any more complicated than it was in the 50's & 60's, but it shouldn't take much to train somebody to do the work. I still go to local farms to pick my own produce, and they simply tell you what the rules are & let you go pick. It's not rocket science, but I certainly agree that anyone doing the job, should be paid a fair wage. Today, it isn't just about working long hours in the hot sun; it's also being exposed to harmful chemicals, and having to pay for housing. When I worked the fields, the Mexican workers mostly slept in their vehicles or make shift shanties. Nowadays, that's illegal, so they need to be paid enough of a living wage to compensate for those things. It appears though, that the farmers have gotten themselves into a Catch-22. I do think there's something amiss if you can't find people to pick your fields. Seems like a crime to plow under a field, when you could put out a local advertisement for people to come pick their own and at least not waste good food. There's plenty of people who love to do that. Many farmers in my state offer this as a regular practice, and find it very lucrative. It's at least a temporary solution to consider. My suspicion though, is that the farmer is paid more in government subsidies to plow the field under, than they would make with a bit more effort to find workers to pick it. Not being willing to pay a fair wage is their own doing, and it looks as though change is coming; one that will require some painful decisions. As someone else mentioned, these farmers might want to consult the Amish about this one. They have never hired immigrants to work their fields.
it shouldn't be an industry, most people should go back to family farms. 95% of americans used to live on our own farms. now it's only 5% or less. but our cities are now overrun with mass immigratiotion. and most americans abandoned the farm life. like idiots. Now people with worms, diseases, e coli and tropical parasites pick our food.
I fail to understand why the farms couldn't donate the vegetables to charities and have volunteers harvest the crops that they instead ploughed under. The farmers could record the value of their loss and likely be able to claim this amount in taxes. Surely there must be a way to claim this type of thing on your taxes. Besides, harvesting is hard back breaking work and the only people who seem to work as hard as the migrant workers are volunteers.
I'm so sorry for the loss of the crops. What people need to realize is farmers feed us, without them we have no food. But it's going to get a lot worse.
Why don't they pay a living wage? Aren't these farmers being greedy? With all the Democrats around there, I'm surprised they haven't brought back slave labor. Ohhhhh! Now I get it.
Ken Wells I don’t understand why you think that Democrats are greedy when the minimum wages are higher in Democrats run states compare to the ones run by republicans.

People complain about jobs, well, pick your farm site to work at
There are plenty of homeless people in Seattle and elsewhere who could work.

“….about minimum wage“ translation less than minimum.
It’s the pay not immigration you make money with your crop but you don’t pay so workers can make money 💰
thoughts and prayers for the farming industry.
it shouldn't be an industry, most people should go back to family farms. 95% of americans used to live on our own farms. now it's only 5% or less. but our cities are now overrun with mass immigratiotion. and most americans abandoned the farm life. like idiots. Now people with worms, diseases, e coli and tropical parasites pick our food.
Very informative. It is so helpful to see these issues from another angle.
There isn't ANYONE to harvest them.
Pretty soon if you don't know how to garden?
Only the elite will be eating fruits and vegetables.
LETS KEEP VOTING FOR DE SANTIS.
Pay good wages, you wouldn't work for what you pay. Tn. Farmer!!!!!🤔😮
Dollar on haur. And nobody won't work. I am in shock
the homeless will do the job if they get a fair pay.
Yeah the drug addicts , rapists thieves etc they will also good job.
Extreme pride and self-confidence are the demise of the USA.
Pick your own crops, always wanting others to do their work
Miss Piggy can use the EXERCISE!
Ya thas the problem say no body wants to work no that's not the problem no body wants to pay Thas the problem
America will depend on overseas fruit and vegetables
James Murphy I grow my own
I'm so sorry for the loss of the crops. What people need to realize is farmers feed us, without them we have no food. But it's going to get a lot worse.
We need slaves
FarmWORKERS feed us.
Why don,t they come up with a work release program with the state of Washington prison syestem, were prisoners work and get paid before they get out of prison, working for the farms. Low risk ,life skills in prison program.
That’s dangerous
@@ejeffe Hello, not really not if they have 8 prison guards ser arouding the area were prisoners are working all dressed in white, low risk 3 yrs left on there sentence while attending bible study in prison, and going to brush up on life skills program in school , keeping them very busy before they get out of prison.
Alfonso Flores that’s good idea
Washington needs farm workers while the city of Freeatle has 5000 pr more people living on the streets, I see a simple solution to both problems.
Go talk to trump to send the people’s living from the welfare to start working not more freebies
Start taking away the corporate welfare first - especially from the farmers .
Pay proper American wages not migrant wages then you'll get your product picked, boo hoo.
Hire American.
No American can handle it or want that hard labor work.
Where are Donny's supporters...
Jobs for them.
No takers?
Here's some ideas
1) Switch to another crop which can be harvested by machine.
2) Take part in the federal, temporary farm worker program (which ensures the workers go back at the end of harvest)
3) Don't just rely on walk ins. Maybe there's some local college kids that would do the work if you advertized and paid enough.
None of those would work
They would rather take out 100k worth of zucchini rather then up the pay for workers. Just over minimum wage?
