  • Andreas has loved animals and nature since his early childhood, which he spent near the lowland forests, surrounded by farm animals and pets.
But the zoos… he did not like them. So what turned him into taking a job… at a zoo?
Andreas has been actively involved with wild animals, wildlife conservation, and zoos on a professional basis since the late 1980s, before given the chance to turn an unremarkable wildlife park into one of Austria‘s major zoological facilities in the mid-1990s.
In his talk Andreas shares perspectives on what makes the zoos a really excellent ones.
Andreas is a wildlife biologist and certified consultant for organic farming and forestry. For several years, he represented Austria at meetings of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), leading the development of the CITES guidelines for the non-air transport of live wild animals and plants. Andreas currently represents the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums on the Advisory Panel of the International Air Transport Association's Live Animals and Perishables Board, and is a member of the Austrian National Animal Protection Council, where he chairs the Wildlife & Zoo Working Group.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Thank you, Andreas, for sharing your thoughts and experience! This was a great contribution to understanding the role of zoos and aquariums in the world today. Make sure you keep the Santa Barbara Zoo on your itinerary when you come to the States.

Now that is an amazing speech!! I could not agree more! ''Zoo'' should be used only for accredited ''good'' Zoos. Any other, are animal attractions! Not Zoos!
