    Hey Josh... this film has long been on my must watch list, but I had no idea about the missing footage. I'm picking up a copy for sure. I'm kinda glad I waited!

    Hi Josh:
    Great video about a truly unique film. It is AMAZING that they could create those effects with models during the 20s. Thanks for bringing these important films to our attention.

    I've wanted to watch this for years, but never got round to it.
    Just stumbled across your channel and queued about a dozen of your videos before I even started watching them. You just earned yourself a sub!

    I may have mentioned this film before, but I love the amazing special effects that went into the original Godzilla. As for Metropolis, I didn't know about the missing scenes. I think I'll have to find a copy to watch!

      Godzilla is a fantastic choice! It certainly set the bar for the many monster movies that followed it!

    As a kid I loved the effects in The Three Worlds of Gulliver and Jason and The Argonauts.

      Those are some great ones! Classic Ray Harryhausen stop motion is hard to beat!

    Hey Josh! I host a movie night every Saturday with me and my friends where we watch classic movies. We had watched Black Narcissus recently and it was truly captivating. I had a lot of questions about the movie, but I found there was no decent reviews or explanations for the film on TH-cam except from you. Despite there being a lot of movie review content on TH-cam, you have really hit a niche by talking about these highly acclaimed older films. I really hope your channel grows and you keep making these videos.
    Metropolis looks excellent! I am going to put it on my list to watch with my friends!

      My favorite special effects film is probably The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter. The creature effects are just amazing.

      I’m so glad to hear you’ve been enjoying these! I’ve definitely enjoyed trying to bring more attention to some of these classic films people either may not have heard of or aren’t really talked about as much by other people on TH-cam.
      Great choice by the way! The Thing is definitely a landmark in special effects that in a number of ways hasn’t been topped.

    The film techniques blew me away when I first watched it. I kept asking myself "wait how the heck did they do that in the 20's?" especially the shots that faked the scale.
    Hope you also get to M eventually.

    • @JoshuaSutlive
      @JoshuaSutlive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I am definitely aiming to make a video on M at some point in the future! It probably won’t be in the too near future since I just did a Fritz Lang film but M is one of my all time favorites so it is definitely in the works!

    Great sci-fi movie that has had a lot of inspiration on future filmmakers. If not for this movie we would not have Star Wars, Blade Runner and so many more good stuff. Favorite special effects movie to many good ones. Here are a few to point out Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Thing (1982), the original War of the Worlds from 1953, The Fly remake.

      Those are some fantastic choices! I actually just saw The War of the Worlds a few months ago and was blown away by the special effects and color cinematography!

    Amazing. Was just wondering if we find a time machine and go back to when it was released and tell them one day there will be color and dialogue can be heard, they would laugh at us.

    • @JoshuaSutlive
      @JoshuaSutlive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly enough, when synchronized audio was first being introduced, a lot of filmmakers, producers, and actors pushed against it calling it a fad saying things like “if audiences wanted to hear dialogue, they would have gone to a play.”

      @@JoshuaSutlive Yeah true, it's not dead contrary to what has been predicted by opponents. In fact, it currently sits at its highest in six months at $24,296 (for 1 bitcoin), much highter than what it was worth at the start of this year ($16.5+K), but also much lower than this day the previous year when it was worth $44K+. It's highest ever was $64K+ though. It has certainly seen ups and downs and no one knows what the future holds.

    FX ahead of it's time, _Metropolis_ is like if _2001_ were made in the 1950s. Fave FX movie: _Star Trek: The Motion Picture_ - the immersive, profoundly majestic & widely misunderstood gothic horror masterwork.

    It's hard to watch. I could watch it maybe I would have to watch it in 6 parts.

    • @JoshuaSutlive
      @JoshuaSutlive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, admittedly it can be kind of a tough watch especially if not under the right conditions. While the cinematography, effects, and production design are incredible and hold up very well today, the acting is very expressive and many times feels pretty stilted and over the top today and the story can be a little convoluted(especially before the missing scenes were added back in) so breaking it up if you need to is probably not too bad of an idea. Despite its age and drawbacks there’s a lot to appreciate!
