For you kiddos who weren't there, the 2000s were a TRIP AND A HALF. David Zucker, the man behind some of the best comedies of all time, decided to bring politics into his work when absolutely nobody asked for it. We discovered this relic of the late-Bush era and we needed to tell people about it. Join us on our journey as we explore this racist, sexist, God-Bless-America horrorshow and our discussion of why there aren't more conservative comedians!

I think Conservatives could be funny if they saw the humor in themselves. Portlandia, The Simpsons, and others skewer silly liberal shit all the time; but conservative comedy contain almost zero shots at the conservative nutters among them. South Park is about the only exception as they happily hit anyone they think are idiots, but then libertarians often skew toward hating everyone.
I was Republican quite a long time (never a social conservative) and it was obvious to me back then that conservative comedy was scared to go after themselves.
What happened they used to be much more able to make fun of themselves?
@@kblixtmoney, the more popular and long lasting any piece of media lasts, the more production 'investment' goes into it. Subsequently, the more generic the writing becomes.
Due both to the needs to appeal to the increasing investor count, and the slow death of talent in writing, just hire cheaper talent.
Remember, the MCU started with Blade, and is now just garbage and Deadpool. Halo got reformatted to increase Microsoft's bottom line. And AssCreed was never really that well written in the first place.
The Simpsons is now just Liberal fantasy, instead of the biting critique of American life it started as, and subsequently was outpaced by the likes of South Park.

That's really it. Conservative media outlets are just bullshit factories. They're all hyperbole and zero analysis. When you live in a fantasy land where your little group are the heroes and everyone else are the villains you don't tend to have a lot of room in you psyche for self-examination. They all think they're living in some idiotic Disney movie and in Disney movies the protagonists are such good guys there's no need for them to take a moral inventory of themselves and their surroundings. They can automatically and instinctively separate sin from virtue because they're just that good, right? So everyone else that isn't like them must, just, like, HATE goodness, right?! Derp.

Here's something that really dates this movie: It's firm Pro Iraq War Stance. Nowadays, it's EXTREMELY rare to find someone who still defends the Iraq War. Even conservatives who strongly supported the Iraq War at the time now say it was a big mistake in hindsight.
And not only that, A LOT of high profile conservatives now view the Dubya Years(as well as the Bush and Cheney Families in general) in a negative light. Hell, in 2016, Trump denounced the Iraq War and said on a GOP Debate Stage that the Bush/Cheney Administration lied about there being Weapons of Mass Destruction, and yet he still received the GOP nomination that year.
Plus, Jeb Bush got absolutely DESTROYED in the 2016 GOP Primary, and the failure of his campaign ended whatever relevance the Bush Family still had.
If someone were to show this movie to a group of College Republicans today, I bet even they wouldn't like this movie.

Exactly. Most of the MAGA chuds HATE the Bush era-neocons and think the Iraq war was a mistake. Also many neocons, (Bill Kristol, Dick Cheney, David Frum, etc.) are "Never-Trumpers". While its nice seeing conservatives denouncing Trump, the sad part is the attempt at sanitizing Bush's' legacy. Also there's the fact that MAGA loves to brag about how Trump kept us out of war (even if its not exactly true).

He definitely has his moments. The world is changing but I will always remember how he was once at the "Arrest Bush" forefront and the way he went after Christian extremists. Nowadays you can be strongly left wing but on the fence about one or two things and the new left concentrate on only those views. This has to change as it's turning people away.
Here's the one and only Bill Maher joke I think is still funny:

idk if I'd put South Park up on a pedestal, though I'll grant that they do _a lot_ better than average, especially for somewhat right-learning dudes. they can be pretty damn funny, and sometimes even surprisingly insightful. I find that when they try to add more explicit political messaging into their shows it sort of stumbles. PC principal being probably the most egregious recent example. he's not "offensive", he's just cringe and unfunny. good comedy, and probably even more so good satire, depends on being able to view the world from the perspective you're attempting to mock (no coincidence that most conservatives are so hopelessly bad at it). and the last while (jfc damn near a decade at this point) I just don't get the impression they're as curious about the world as they may have once been, and the comedy really suffers as a result in many episodes.
World Police making fun of celebrities for speaking out against the Iraq War rings so fucking hollow. Like, arent they two fucking celebrities that are making a movie and have a long running show where they make political commentary? Who are they to mock others for doing the same thing that they do? And it'd be one thing if the celebrities in question were saying dumb shit, but seemingly Trey Parker and Matt Stone didn't even have an issue with their message just that they deign to speak it all. It's the same shit they did with Al Gore and Man-Bear-Pig.
Often liberal celebrities are trying to act as activists for good causes. I know there are many that are idiots, but in this case, we are talking about people that were trying to speak up against the Iraq War. People like the Dixie Chicks literally lost their career for speaking against it as did many political commentators. The unpopular position was to speak up against the Iraq War.
Trey and Matt throw specific shit at Jeneanne Garofolo there, seemingly picturing her as the ring leader, but she was very politically active in that era and even had a political news show she ran with Sam Seder, who still runs a version of that show to this day. Sam Seder has even talked about how news shows only wanted smaller figures on to discuss the Iraq War and how they tried to make fun of her as some left wing looney actor and the such. She didn't want to be the advocate in that position, she knew she wasn't an expert on the middle east or something, but they literally weren't giving air time to people that were experts and she took any chance she could to speak out against the atrocities. At a certain point, you don't really need to be an expert to see that genocide and wanton war is wrong and to speak against it. There was largely a blackout for people that were against the war. It was Manufacturing Consent at its finest and yet despite the media acting that way, the Iraq War was still incredibly unpopular with the American populace.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are being incredibly reactionary with critiques like this and that's honestly a pretty big pattern that's followed throughout their careers. They have a sense of righteous indignation toward anyone that has genuine righteous indignation on a topic and often it ends up with them looking pretty shitty if not immediately, then in the future. They give big "why was MLK trying to hard with all these marches and shit?" vibes. Ironically, as much as they like to act above it all, they fall into the White Moderate that MLK warned about so long ago.

Not to mention spending the entire movie pointing out how fucked up and dumb the US military industrial complex is, but walking it back in the last big speech like "yeah, we suck, but like it's a good thing because there are evil foreign guys out there!"
So they pretend to not care about one side or the other, but they sure do a lot of white knighting for Conservative talking points.

My favorite part is how they never cop to anything they said that was, in hindsight, incredibly stupid. They spent the first decade of that show insisting that climate change wasn't real. Then they made a video about how smug people who drive hybrids are and threw in some little line about how people should drive them because they're "good for the environment." Sure. That totally makes up for Manbearpig, guys. Good one.

It's so funny. Kevin Sorbo is in a Low Budget Movie and It's bad. Put Kevin Sorbo in a Big Budget Movie like that or any movie and It's still bad. And then Sorbo says ,,I'm blacklisted because I'm Repupablican". No! He is blacklisted because he made and still make dump choices.

I feel like it ALMOST could've worked if it leaned in on "racist grandpa is telling this story" - more cuts away to him, more obvious stuff that's clearly him editorialising. Like I dunno, it's 2008, have some terrorist playing a Ninetendon't Games Boy instead of listening to some really important information his beloved patriotic grandfather is telling him. The terrorists are played by grandpa's actor and one of the kids listening. That's terrible I know but you get the point, grandpa needs to be the butt of the joke instead of this objectively correct storyteller.

I feel like we've reached a point where Bill Maher isn't really even a liberal. He's honestly moved further to the right since the early 00s while the rest of the democratic party has moved to the left.

Looking at this film, it’s almost shocking how similar the “comedy” is to what we see today coming out of right wing circles. I was always told that “Conservative comedy is a decade behind.” But, I no longer think that is the case.

The fact that this stars Chris Farley's brother makes me sad because I'm almost certain that if Christ Farley lived long enough to see his career tank, he would have been the lead in this.
On one hand, this could be handwaved away by Leslie Nielsen's character injecting his politics into a story he made up. On the other, look at the people involved in the movie.
someone pointing out the whole thing is told by an unreliable narrator in some funny way, like having grandpa be alive in the metastory and mysteriously get with all the women and kick ass the asses or something, would be both too deft and too funny for this movie and its intended audience. Even just a few more cutaways or content skips like peter falk does in princess bride would have helped...
I always thought that Chris Farley reminded me a lot of my uncles, but holy sh*t, off-brand Farley looks identitical to my worst uncle. He's the one that got black out drunk and hit my cousin (my cousin who wasn't even his own kid and was still a child). It is actually unsettling
7:24 The movie Four Lions is essentially a longform version of this joke, and it actually pulls it off really well, with a good mix of humor and pathos. It helps that the muslim characters are portrayed as fairly sympathetic and likable despite being bumbling terrorists.

Nothing beats George C Scott’s portrayal, so well, he did it twice.
The one thing I did actually enjoy, and was a valid point against the left was about the rich, entitled Hollywood celebrities just stuffing their faces while they talked about the poor people around the world. As a lefty myself, it could have been an indictment of capitalism, to enjoy, but they didn’t take it that far.
I feel like the whole movie was a big missed opportunity for that because that would have been valid satire (based in truth) but instead they spent their time getting choked up about American flags 🙄

Seems bold for a bunch of John's, Kevin's and Michael's (add a James and you literally have all of my uncles) to take aim at name originality... especially since we all know how much they appreciate it when the black community gets creative with THEIR names. I had 2 boys, picking a first and middle for both sucked. It was one of the little things i was looking forward to but boys names just didn't offer a lot of options, even when you ransack other cultures for one. 😅

it is bad enough that it's racist, but in terms of why it doesn't even get a guilty chuckle is because it's tired, too. i've seen it before, over and over and over again, starting twenty years ago. south park has run it into the ground. WKUK ran it into the ground. family guy ran it into the ground. it's soooo played to depict middle easterb people that way, so while it is mean it isn't pushing any boundaries. not even of decency, since american culture really has no decency left to play with.

Okay, by this point it’s kinda well known that Mohamed is the most common name in the world. It is literally more popular than John. And of course, it originated in west Asia, so you will find higher concentrations of people with that name in west Asian (and north Africa). So, even if you don’t find that joke funny, it is a reflection of reality. But then they ruin it by adding the Hussein “joke.”

Coke Francis is right that this movie takes conservatives waaay too seriously to be funny. That's the main problem with Republican comedy (any joke that reinforces the stereotypes promoted by the stablishment is technically a conservative joke, but American conservatives don't tell a lot of those jokes nowadays, preffering to laserfocus on very cringe Left vs Right humor, hence my distintion)... Ultimately, movies like this or Ladyballers aren't funny because their makers don't want people to laugh at the things they're mocking, the want people to be angry and/or affraid; they want these "threats" to be _taken seriously_ by the viewers. Comedy is a double-edged weapon, conservatives like its power to punch down, too make someone look like a fool unworthy of serious consideration, but the downside of that is that nobody fears a fool, almost nobody gets angry for something unworthy of serious consideration, and the only thing more pathetic than a clown is a serious person trying to fight a clown

Kevin's brother Chris was broken hearted by the fat phobic punchline of the Chippendales sketch and he only did it because he was new to SNL and wanted to make them happy. The only reason that that sketch is remembered as a classic today is because Chris's performance was amazing.. not because of the "hilarious" punchline that Chris is too fat to be a dancer.... It's awful that Kevin would then do a movie where it constantly made fun of his weight.... also, the only good series of fat jokes written by a thin man is Weird Al's "Fat".

i may be giving the movie too much credit, but the lenni riefenstahl joke was kinda funny as a satire of how elitist film organizations often amorally celebrate technical achievements in the medium while ignoring the sometimes morally reprehensible contexts of those achievements. for example, the original afi top 100 broadcast had a segment on either the birth of a nation or the jazz singer (i don’t remember which) that straight up didn’t mention the egregious racism of the film. this gag’s inclusion in the movie seems to imply that such indifference towards the more shameful aspects of these films has led those within the film industry (the people who are most likely to be reverent towards film institutions) to experience moral decay, and since these people are in charge of making the media we consume every day, that moral decay has spread to the general american public. in a vacuum, not a bad joke. would’ve been better in a movie that didn’t blindly feed into the at-the-time mainstream narrative that all middle easterners are evil, america-hating terrorists.
as for the shot of reifenstahl and hitler playing in the back yard, i don’t know what the joke was there.
that’s what the joke COULD have been, but it wasn’t because this movie was made by people with zero media literacy
Is it wrong that the thing I hate the most about this film is they screwed up the one thing that the movie was based around? Like, they set it up as "using the Christmas carol theme and structure to tell an American story" but then turned around and fucked that up. Like he only gets approached by 3 ghosts (Trace Adkins is still alive so he really doesn't count), Washington shows up for one scene well into the "present" section of the structure, and even with all that it spits on the original message of "be kind to all" with "be kind to only those that are white and conservative."

Team America is a pro-war pro-America movie. It's not a balanced movie taking shots at both sides.
Sorry to comment on an old video, but I gotta say Dennis Miller did have a funny moment in the 90's. His performance in Tales From The Crypt: Bordello of Blood was funny and badass. He could've been better if he didn't suck up to right wingers so hard.

It is, indeed, cut and pasted wholesale from The Onion Movie. Except, as you pointed out, it was longer (and funnier, and less racist in context) in the original.

Cody at “Some More News” had a pretty good video on Conservative comedy and talked about how Conservatives can be funny but not Americans for some reason. A lot of UK/Australian conservative comedians are relatively funny mostly because they don’t get overly mad and have actual constructed jokes about Brexit and Mining etc

I was born in '97 with conservative parents so grew up listening to Limbaugh, Hannity, and O'Reilly and its definitely drilled into you that criticizing the US means you are unamerican.
