Thank you for watching. Mix consistency is so important as it has a huge affect on the quality of the finished project. Due to environmental factors your really looking for specific Feel/slump in your concrete to decide if it's right. It's a step beyond measuring the right amount of water,
Great video, I learnt a lot, I appreciated you taking the time to mix concrete and explain why and what you where looking for. Very helpful for someone like me who has not done it before but wants to give it a go.
TH-cam suggested your video idk why, i clicked it, seemed interesting, was gonna skip the part where you mixed the cement but felt your talking was really entertaining. I really like you
Water content and mix consistency sets the entire process in motion. It's so important to start on the right foot to set yourself up for success in the later stages of the pour ad finishing work and even your final cure strength.
As a bricklayer, I can confirm a dry board will dry your mix up. You can uses a board many times, in fact the more times you used it, the better it would work for taking moisture out. That being said, being accurate with measuring water is the most important thing! Great video!
This dude is a master... You get instructions, an intimate experience on the importance of mixing concrete for the right consistency, a beautiful pot as a result and some philosophy chucked in. I listened to it while making lunches for my household at 5am and found it relaxing 👍👍
Thank you! I'm so glad you got something out of it. I've watched a lot of tutorial videos and I wanted to add an element of fun and personality to them. (as well as actual good info). Thank you for the feedback and for watching. I have more good ideas coming, I'll try anf keep it interesting for you!
To hit maximum strength we have water reducers and plasticizer built into the mix so that we can mix as dry as possible. Many artist use way too much water in their mixes which results in weak concrete. Using our UHPC we hit a cure strength that is 4X-6X stronger than your average concrete mix. And it cures in a fraction of the time as well.
Just happened upon you. You are TERRIFIC! Everything I could want in a TH-cam how to. I love it when you flatulate. Perfect. Absolutely necessary to see the correct mixing scenario. Cheers!
This is a great video! When I look for tutorials, I look for clear, detailed information (without any loud, annoying background music!) ... I want to really SEE HOW to do something I've never done before. So, no, this is not boring at all. Maybe some of the folks who are bored should go watch an action movie! Thanks so much for making this.
Thank you for watching. I want to show as much as I can in real time to help you see how it all goes down. Even though it takes time seeing the mix consistency and how the concrete moves at said consistency is important.
Haters are gonna hate...don't worry about those people. It's so easy to scroll on by if you don't like something, it's just a case of misery loves company...haha I love that you filmed the mixing part. I use a ring light with a clip for my phone , on a tripod. It's super easy and gives good lighting. Your video is just fine btw ❤
It's the first time I see one of your videos, and I liked it. I felt your speech 😂. Even the video was 28 minutes, you make it really nice to watch 🤷🏻♀️
Honestly? This batch was actually a little bit on the wet side. We're only mixing for an aesthetic look but if we were doing structural work it would be much drier and we would use mechanical vibration to keep it fluid during the pour. The wetter your concrete is the weaker it is, both in surface crustiness but also compressive strength.
Thank you for replying. Loved your project! Let me just ask this then...does this apply with normal Quickcrete type concrete and portland cement mixes or just to your magical Grey Matter. Went to your web site and bookmarked for future concrete project money spending!
Yes this applies to all concrete. If you were to make two samples cylinders to do a compressive crush test with out of identical mix designs but made one mix super wet, the wet mix would also be the weak mix. For a sack a quikcrete you want to have just enough water for the mix to come together, no dry spots visible. But this mix will have very little flow unless vibrated as it has no plasticizers or water reducers in it.
So one big benefit to Grey matter is that because of the plasticizers and water reducers already in the mix you can get good flow without over saturating water.
Thanks for teaching me about concrete. I want to make some tiny bowls, something you can hold in your hand. I know nothing about this stuff. Gotta love TH-cam
Thanks for watching! Glad you got something out of of it. We actually have a beginner at www.concreteconcrete.com it has everything you need to make a small handheld pot for about $25. Check it out, it might be just what you need to experiment with yourself!
Thank you!, It's not too bad, and with how quickly our Grey Matter concrete mix cures it means you get to demold it quick too! Thanks for taking the time to watch!
You're creating art bro, you don't need to know all the jargon of concrete that a civil engineer would need to know! They are just being jerks. Great video!
I am at an anxious point in my life so i pretty much do just fast forward videos all the time to get to the final product but I found you so funny that i was like no, you're watching this cause you like it 😂
I like it. Interesting choice in colors. I thought it would be ugly at first but once it came out of the mold and i saw the finished colors it kinda grew on me.
When you started adding it to the mold all I could think was FORBIDDEN CHOCOLATE COOKIE MINT ICE CREAM Love the video! Exactly what I needed to begin my own concrete journey.
Thank you for watching. I'm trying to figure out what to do with that. I also don't like the motion sick feel to the camera some times but I do like the idea of filming the video from the perspective of the person actually making the goods. We will find a happy in between place!
Subscribed! I’ve spent hours upon hours in the classroom in nursing school so I’m used to lessons lasting 3 hours, no hugie. Watching a 30 minute video is a cakewalk lol I really enjoyed your style of instruction, with humor whether you meant it or not. You remind me of my pottery teacher the first time I went to college for Fine Arts, she was very unintentionally funny! Aaaaanyways, I am looking forward to making my own pots for our upcoming crafts sale where I work. Thanks for the tutorial!🙏🏼
I just found this. I am glad he showed himself mixing the concrete. I always think I mix concrete wrong because I think it is too dry. I always think the listed amount of water is wrong. So this was good for me. It let's me see exactly how long it takes to mix it correctly. Thank you.
Very nice. Great finish look. Try making individual strands (irregular sizes) with your coloured concrete and then spiral or braid them together. (Each method will create a different result.) Then cut them into dissimilar sizes and pack them into your mould. This works great for dry packing as well then add a new colour for void filling.
Honestly a great video and probably one of the most informative I have watched on TH-cam in terms of how to properly mix the concrete and what you are looking for in terms of the consistency! Well done and I'm subscribing!
You're one of the few people that I've seen who makes marbled concrete by actually mixing different layers of concrete. Everyone else just seems to sprinkle colorant, or use acid stains...neither of which ever seem to look like marble. I prefer your method. :)
I laughed out loud watching this. Also learned a lot! Never used pigments before, but just subscribed to your channel hoping you have other videos with tips of what to buy, what types of pigments, etc. From Costa Rica here, so I´m grateful about kilos and mL.
Yellow and bright pink is a awesome combination 😁 I'm love making concrete and cement planters. I got white cement....can't wait to use it with super bright colors and glow in the dark. Happy concrete making to you.
The wetness of your mix is always a balance act between the detail of the mold and how strong you want a piece to be. Dry mixes are structurally stronger but have lots of voids. Wet mixes can have less voids but tend to separate during vibration so strength of a piece can be variable and also lower. To date our Grey matter mix is the most fluid I've seen a mix while keep water content extremely low (giving higher cure strengths)
I am so happy to have found you! I’m just starting and have color bleeding any advice I’m using for candle containers and bowls and platers thanks so much! I love playing with concrete too😊
I LOVE it!!!!..you are an artist not a builder and I like it because I like discovering things...I do not want or need a specific recipe to do ANYTHING. I love the artist
Hi Gloria, Thank you! I will say there are times when you do need to do things by the books (ie: architectural or structural work) We do also supply professionals that need repeatability and reliability with their materials. There's room for both types of craftsman/artists in the world!
Hello, hello & hi, Mr. C C Guy, a very very nice video. Pleasant day to you. And, an extremely beautiful planter you made. I woke up this one fine morning & was just flipping thru TH-cam for anything interesting & different, & I came across your channel, & I'm so, so glad I did! I absolutely love what you taught me. I hear you talk about the length of videos, etc etc, and I said, "Mmm, I must communicate my thoughts on this to this guy." First thing; as an old school individual, who cares what the length of a video is, if you're going to be learning something?! Gosh man, we all live in a world where ppl are, & will be critical, (always), just for the sake of being critical! Simply ignore the naysayers! Professional ones, laymen ones, male, female, kids, teens, & whatever other grouping that ppl can be put into! If a video is made, & it's interesting enough to watch, why?, because it's teaching you how to do a certain subject, then ppl will watch the whole darn thing from start to finish & start it back again!!! I oftentimes tell ppl this! I do all kinds of creative designing. Clothing, art & crafts, house plans, interior decorating, and my list goes on & on. And, you wanna know what's the best part of all that is, I ENJOY IT! And I still find time to do nothing if I want. Go shopping, visiting family & friends from time to time, cooking, watch lots & lots of videos. And, oh yes, as a woman, this one likes to clean her space, so I clean my home & take care of all the other day to day chores that need to be done. So, my dear young fellow, pucker up, & do what you are gifted to do best. It has all to do with time management & contentment of mind. Not if you are rich or poor, nor from what part of the world you live. That matters not at all! As for me, I'll always be learning something! Bless up. Oh, by-the-way, do some pots in varying shades of blue & white, plz. And can clear glaze be put on the pot after it's dried & sanded?
Hello Judy, Thank you for the comment, I read it out loud to the team, we all loved it. Yes I'll do a blue and white. Yes a sealer can be applied. I like just buffing on wax but you could also use penetrating acrylic.
Oh, hi Mr. C C Guy, Thank you so very much. And, read your reply comment to my husband. He too liked everything that was said. Thanks for sharing. I look forward for more of your tutorials. Remember now, take your time & let the video run its course, & ignore the naysayers. Bye for now Mr. C C Guy.
Hey there! Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge and power! Inspiring! I am about to create some concrete floooooooors! 36sqm basement. WHAT kind of pigments can I use?????? I am in Southern Europe. What kind of pigments, what where can I look for some - that’s my biggest question altogether! Hoping for some feedback - so excited to get cracking! ..also planning on some Podests and shelfs. Thank you SO much!
thank you for being honest and being yourself i think you taking so long make people loose patience although some have learn from the amount of time you take because they relate to your teaching some people learn slow and some not so slow.
Thank you. I'm sure these videos will change over time but today they are long and slow and maybe I talk too much. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Thank you for watching. Mixing and ensuring you have the proper amount of water is SO important. It will affect all aspects of your pour and the mechanical properties of your finished casting. Most home users and even lots of amateur contractor use too much water to increase flow and make their life easier, but your really trading away the future of your casting for a slightly easier time pouring into your forms.
Those of us in the candle making world that make our own concrete vessels use cement all & pour it in the mold. 3 hours later, it’s done. Easy peasy. I might be interested in some of your pigments though 🤔 I can marble in a thinner substrate.
Yes but our grey matter will outlive all of the cement all :D Our Grey Matter has no large aggregate filler, so you're getting a lot more cementous material per bag. PLUS Grey Matter is 3X stronger than general purpose mix! We love our mix. New sample pigment kit came out last month, if ya wanted to try Best to ya
Interesting.. I havent seen this other way to create this effect. If I wanted to polish the outside to give a little shining look, what do you recommend?
Thank you for taking the time to watch, concreteconcrete.com/collections/shop/products/large-planter-mold. I hand make all the molds to the same specification as the ones I use for my own artistic practice.
WOW, THANK YOU :) I have watched at least 75 DIY concrete videos looking for someone to elaborate on concrete recipes, color pigments, ect. I really appreciated your clearly in-depth instruction method. I have a really big question regarding working with concrete as dry as you did??? I want to make a large concrete planter or vessel to use as an Aquascape; a Container Water Garden for my porch to put a few water plants like Horsetail Reed and Papyrus and maybe a few little fish. (The plants are already sitting on my porch I have to water them like 10X's a day, I live in FL.) Anyways, I would like one about 2 feet in diameter and it would probably only be 6 - 8" deep, so a mold specifically for concrete would cost a fortune so I was thinking about using a bath tub for a baby, I saw one on FB for like $5 that is kidney shaped that seems like it would look nice and smooth if I could just lay the concrete in it and up the sides and smooth it with my hands. Can you please give me some advice if that will work without having a smaller thing on top or can you give me some direction on how I should build this? If I am asking too much I am so sorry, I would just appreciate some feedback :) Thanks, Jessica
Hi Jessica I've been considering what the next video I should do is and a DIY mold for something large might be fun. I think I have a good understand of what your looking for. I'll see what I can dig up in the next week and do a tutorial and try to cover all the best practices. Thank you for watching!
I have no idea how I stumbled onto this video, as I typically watch makeup videos on TH-cam. But man, I was entertained for 28min. haha. Good job man. Keep up doing what you love and when you are good at something, you'll always have someone with nothing nice to say.
Do you have a video on how to make your silicone moulds? And do you know how to make a mould that will make the plant pot have a drainage hole without having to drill through your concrete?
I'd encourage you to use your own colours; what would you use? Always nice to know my take on concrete work is unique enough to make other disagree with me.
I like making the "pancake" method is it helps give you defined patterning, if you try and mix all your colours in a bucket you have way less control. It is doable in one bucket but you'll have a greater degree of success with pancakes
I'm starting to create concrete pots, I loved your video, just some doubts, before the water, what has the mix? Some I see that they use fiber replica fiberglass, and what kind of cement is it? Do you recommend portland?
Hi Annie. www.concreteconcrete.com It's a mix we designed to make high quality home wares and architectural pieces. We designed it because most high performance concrete from a manufacturer involves a licensing agreement (approx $100K a year just for the license) and minimum orders we're tonnes per month. Grey Matter gives you chance to work with the high quality concrete without the licensing fees or minimum orders.
CONCRETE CONCRETE I am making concrete from molds for candles and this was very informative. I am trying to start my own business so you are definitely giving good advice. I will update you.
Found your channel and must say you are my kind of crazy. Lol I really enjoyed your video. That looks totally awesome. Tip: if you pick a simple mold that any of us would have around the house, perhaps a plastic bottle, and instead of using pigments you did a painted one. Ask us what simple project we wanted to make, the colour, and size. You could do a pole on these and next video we all could work with you perhaps on live. Just a thought.
Good work. What kind of cement are you using. Cement all is recommended by some but cost is a big deal. They make some liquid form to pour into mold, I see you made it like clay texture you can still add color marble or single color ones, like this :0)
I was wondering if adding the colour powder to the concrete, it will end up being more prone to break down or develop cracks in the future? Especially in humid environments.
If you don't use the right type of pigment that's possible. The pigments we use at ConcreteConcrete are designed to work with our mix and will not affect the structural integrity
Can you use mica pigment to dye concrete. (P. S. If people think your videos are boring they don't have to watch the video if they don't want to. Nobody's making them. So I agree with what you said about what people's opions are, achievements, carry on with what you're passionate about.
What surprised me about your video is how long you allow your concrete to set before you put it to use. When I pour I won't panic as much after seeing this. thanks!
Hi Kathy, thank you for watching. Glad to hear something I did will help you work with more peace of mind. Technically Grey Matter could be classified as a "high early" mix design it gets very close to maximum strength(+10 000psi) in the first 24hrs. With a liberal amount of water you have 45 minutes work time and if your mix is on the dry side it could be as quick as 15 minutes.

Can’t believe that’s the consistency you use for your concrete. Very cool to see; I never would have guessed that was thin enough for anything.
To hit maximum strength we have water reducers and plasticizer built into the mix so that we can mix as dry as possible. Many artist use way too much water in their mixes which results in weak concrete. Using our UHPC we hit a cure strength that is 4X-6X stronger than your average concrete mix.
Hello Judy,
Thank you for the comment, I read it out loud to the team, we all loved it.
C C Guy.
This IS a lot of fun!
Yes
I personally thoroughly enjoyed the concrete mixing the most! 😂
Us too!
Very good nice work for making pots ....
Thank you!
Thank you for watching! Mineral pigments will work.
thank you for being honest and being yourself i think you taking so long make people loose patience although some have learn from the amount of time you take because they relate to your teaching some people learn slow and some not so slow.
Thank you. I'm sure these videos will change over time but today they are long and slow and maybe I talk too much. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
That is very cool didnt expect that to be see nice wow from scotland UK
Ty
Great Job and great Personality. Love your work and style.
Hi J,
Thank you for taking the time to check out the video!
I'd like to see some more yellow because I'm a big fan of yelloW!
I love you
Hi Caroline. I'll for sure do yellow on my next project, thanks for taking the time to watch!
You are the Bob Ross of concrete 🌲
Thank you! I take that as a huge compliment.
looks great
Thank you!!!
Very interesting video! I do concrete lol so I appreciate the emphasis on proper mixing hahahaha
Subscribed. Best video I watched all day and I can't wait to play with some mudd *ehem* I mean, Concrete.
Thank you! I'll have a new video up soon, thanks for watching!
Becoming a master of concrete starts with understanding the mix, mix ratio etc...
Definitely.
Nice pot. Where can I find the colors. Is powder.

New sample pigment kit came out last month, if ya wanted to try
Best to ya
Very nice and helpful video. Will the silicone molds work with resin also? Thank you
Don't know we don't work in resin.
Interesting.. I havent seen this other way to create this effect. If I wanted to polish the outside to give a little shining look, what do you recommend?
Use a water born acrylic tile sealant or sealant for stone work. You can also just buff on the wax we sell on our website
@@CONCRETECONCRETE I cant find the concrete oxide in the colours I want. Have you tried mixing wall paint or acrylic paint in the mix?
fantastic !! 😍 where did you get the silicone mould from??
Thank you for taking the time to watch, concreteconcrete.com/collections/shop/products/large-planter-mold. I hand make all the molds to the same specification as the ones I use for my own artistic practice.
I loved this video.
Thank you for taking the time to watch! Too kind!
you're great ! You had me a "make more flat? these become make more"
Thank you for taking the time to watch!!
Hi Jessica
I've been considering what the next video I should do is and a DIY mold for something large might be fun.
Thank you! That's too kind. We'll keep up with posting beautiful things
Good video learned a lot from you
Glad to hear it
Quedo padrisimo, gracias tu tecnica me va a servir para un Countertop, te felicito por tu actitud muy relajado y tranquilo.👌
De nada
Do you have a video on how to make your silicone moulds? And do you know how to make a mould that will make the plant pot have a drainage hole without having to drill through your concrete?
When the concrete is wet put a pen lid in the back. Boom drain hole. We have a video on this as well in the channel
@@CONCRETECONCRETE BOOM, Thanks! 😎
Hello :) is there a way to get rid of the cloudiness on most areas of the marble pattern?
Send me a picture of the cloudiness your experiencing with your work and I'll see if I can help.
Best I have seen
Thank you!
Nice finish, not sure I would do those colors though.
I'd encourage you to use your own colours; what would you use? Always nice to know my take on concrete work is unique enough to make other disagree with me.
Nice idea. I have a ton of cactus.
perfect
Cool video. What type of concrete is this? And where do I buy that pigment!?
It's our special high grade mix. All can be found and purchased on our website :)
smart way to mixing concrete like pancake ,i gonna try this. thanks for your video.keep on this bro
I like making the "pancake" method is it helps give you defined patterning, if you try and mix all your colours in a bucket you have way less control. It is doable in one bucket but you'll have a greater degree of success with pancakes
You are talking too much and very boring
Roderick Wilson fine , you just don’t get it
Thank you for standing up for me Lin. Roderick is right, I talk too much and I am very boring.
Sir can we use liquid acrylic colors and mix it in wet concrete like you mixed powders? Also can grey cement be colored?
Do what you want but it's not what I would advise
you are hilarious and i like your style.
"ahh weird pancake, what happened?" LOL
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch! Appreciate it!
CONCRETE CONCRETE I am making concrete from molds for candles and this was very informative. I am trying to start my own business so you are definitely giving good advice. I will update you.
oh yes!
Just a thought.
what simple project do you want to make and what colour and size?
Am I the only one who wants to see the face of this man? His voice 🥰
Oh thank you!
I enjoyed your video . I subscribed to your channel. I make Portland cement pots and things and lots of other things. Blessing from Ga.
Thank you Helen!
Hello Helen Wyatt, I have watched your channel also, and have subscribed. I only now discovered Mr. C C Guy's channel. Nice! So very nice.
I love your channel Helen!
Hi
Hiiii Helen........great to see u here
Very very cool 👍🏼😊
Thank you so much
You’re pretty awesome 🎉
Good work. What kind of cement are you using. Cement all is recommended by some but cost is a big deal. They make some liquid form to pour into mold, I see you made it like clay texture you can still add color marble or single color ones, like this :0)
Concrete concrete Grey Matter. Far superior to cemental
I'm not sure. I've experimented with a lot of pigments and the ones I use are the very best I could find.
@@CONCRETECONCRETE OK thank you anyway
What surprised me about your video is how long you allow your concrete to set before you put it to use. When I pour I won't panic as much after seeing this. thanks!
Hi Kathy, thank you for watching. Glad to hear something I did will help you work with more peace of mind. Technically Grey Matter could be classified as a "high early" mix design it gets very close to maximum strength(+10 000psi) in the first 24hrs. With a liberal amount of water you have 45 minutes work time and if your mix is on the dry side it could be as quick as 15 minutes.
