- Here’s some stuff that would’ve been great to know before I ventured into embroidery. In this tutorial, I cover some basics, reuse of materials, common show stopper problems, and some not so common problems with the upper thread sensor and how to mitigate it. I’m hoping a lot of people find this video helpful! If you do, feel free to share the video link or click ads if you feel like it’s worth it. ^_^ Anything is much appreciated.

Mr. Humphreys, I love the tips, especially reusing stabilizer and being able to use plastic wrap for the top layer! Great advise, can't wait to try it. I like the plastic wrap tip. It definitely saves money compared to using solvy stabilizer on large embroidery areas

Oh my goodness no wonder my neeldes kept breaking. I never knew that the tangles came from the thread falling off the arm, so I'd miss it until it was horrendously too late. Half the time my needles would get stuck and break. Thank you for this!

I've been having problems using the plastic bobbins that come with the machine too, (loose stitches on the top), and have been using the metal ones from my old Kenmore machine (similar to Singer). I don't know why they work better, but they do. But thanks to you, now I know what to do to make my plastic bobbins work by putting in some material underneath. I hope that trick works for me too.
That make sense. The metal bobbins are heavier, so they naturally give the thread more tenacity. Let me know how that trick works for you! So far I haven't had any particular problems with plastic bobbins, but I always rewind on metal ones for embroidery. I just use the plastic ones for short runs where the color matters on the bottom of a stitch.
I put a bit of knit underneath (cut in a circle) and so far it works with the same bobbin that didn't work before. Thank you for that wonderful tip.
Thank you for the tips. My upper thread just got tangled around my bobbin and that has never happened before. When I got my machine the brother SE400 it told me not to use the metal bobbins because it can damage the machine. Now I know that is to be not true. Another thing is that my upper thread some times break, I adjust the tension and then it would be too loose. Thank you for this
Hi Adam, I have been driven mad 😠 with thread breaks and looping when embroidering . I’m just trying your little tip with stabiliser in the bobbin holder and up to now it seems to be working. Thanks for the tips on the cling film that will save a lot of cash 💰.

Hi really enjoyed your video. I was wondering if you could help me with one of my problems. When I embroid a stock design (or any design for that matter), the tension for the first thread will be fine however after I changed the thread it becomes looser and looser until it jams. Do you know what could be causing this or how to fix it. I have had this machine (Brother PE540D) for two years and never got a full design out of it. PLEASE HELP!

It sounds like an issue with the design file itself rather than the SE400. Not sure how I can help. :(
I have a Brother LB6800. My thread keeps sliding out of the thread guide on the needle bar. Driving me nuts!

When I use the cling wrap ,it sticks out on my black thread when I do the eye. Do you think I have the right one? Thnx
I can't really say whether there is a right one or not. ^^ I usually stitch with a density of 6 stitches per mm, to that may be a contributing factor.

my pe770 has an issue of top thread breaking constantly! i can't even get through many stitches in one color! What do i do and how can i see if the top tension is the issue. which way in the wheel u showed is lessen or tighten? help, i NEED my embroidery machine to help my dtr and her business!!
Ms. Sherlock, my experience with my machine a Janome 9900 regarding thread sometimes breaking, I slow the stitching down especially if the fabric is thicker. Marilyn

Just off-hand, I'll say the principles are probably the same, but the upper thread sensor might work differently depending on how it was programmed. :)
Do you think the plastic wrap trick would work on top of towels? I was just about to go out and buy some Sulky water soluble at Joann Fabric. We just received a Keurig and I was wondering if the thicker plastic they wrap the items in would work as well. What do you think? By the way, I reuse my stabilizer too. Lol.
I'd certainly think so. And if the plastic bags seem fairly pliable, I wouldn't think a little thicker would hurt. Just keep in mind that the plastic wrap/plain plastic trick is really only ideal for solid regions. If you have a lot of open areas, picking away the plastic could get tedious. (Can't remember whether I mentioned that in the video or not.) And yay for recycling!
The lady at the Viking dealer at JoAnn Fabric told me a friend of hers who embroiders towels for a living, uses dry cleaning bags. So cool.
Why does my EMBRODIERY outline does not line up around my embrodiery.
You mean a satin/zig-zag stitch border around a region? Unless tension is getting too tight, compensation or a good felt backing stabilizer make a big difference.

new to embroidery, so can I import a jpeg and turn into a PES file to embroider on my brother xe 5100? If you don't mind I would love to see a demonstration. I need all the help I can get.
To your specific question, no in two ways: there's no automated converter, and it doesn't support PES. However, you can manually design it with a JPG as a place holder using the tool that looks like a paint brush on the lower left tool panel. Then you'd make your design on top of it and export it as a DST file. My Brother machines support DST files just fine, but I'd try it out on your XE 5100 first to make sure. A design may take a while to load depending on the size, but they have always loaded for me. I cover the rest of the process in my dated SophieSew tutorials. :)
