  • Its no secret that purple is the hottest color for fly tyers out there in recent years. When Upavon released the bionic foam blocks and purple was one of them, I knew it would be a must have. Using the Gunville cutters you can make the cylinders for the Bionic ant and other fly patterns out there to any size you want and it comes in a bunch of colors.
Its also not a secret that the Bionic Ant fly pattern by Lance Egan, simply catches fish. I have used it in the colors of brown and black and had record days on the water and it lasts PERIOD. Its a really quick tie and when treated with floatant it should last you a long time unless you are prone to losing flies like me. Ive caught a ton of record size branches as well with this fly trying to get it to land for the trout laying right underneath that overhanging limb. Luckily its a quick tie.
Tie some up and if you like making your own stuff more than others, purchase the gunville cutter assortment pack so you can make your own foam cylinders for any fly you want.
    Materials:
    Hook: Stealth Hook D16
    Thread: Semperfli waxed thread 8/0
    Foam: Upavon foam blocks
    Cutter: Gunville foam cutters
    Wing: EP Trigger point fibers
Legs: Whiting High and Dry purple grizzly
    cement: Z-ment

I see that you posted this Purple version over a year ago. I am curious how did the purple version catch fish compared to the black or brown versions? Thanks, and I have warmed up to the Idea of using purple and non-tradition colors in our flies. The beauty lies in the eye ...

Being honest I don’t have the luck some people have with purple. It was supposed to be a lights out color but I usually stick with black and brown

That’s what I’m currently playing around with. I’ve noticed when using a heavy rubber leg I notice a difference. The lighter legs vs over hackling I haven’t noticed yet but I was gonna really test it over the next few weeks but then broke my arm and ribs so it might have to wait

mike bush , I used to think that to but for some unknown reason fish dig purple. I tie the purple haze dry , my own Perdigon in purple with a hot spot and a zebra midge and they all work . I do also tie these in Black , brown and cinnamon gyrations pattern
