so the funny thing about throwing clay bowls/pots/vases/etc. is that the name is literal. you dont gingerly press the clay onto the plate, you slap it down with the fury of a mom whose kid wouldn't shut up at the store. the clay forms a vacuum on the underside so it can be spun at high speeds without flying off.

To properly work with clay is consistency consistency consistency. Starting you want it even in moisture all the way around, so you want it mixed well, but you also don't want to add any water if you can help it as it softens/loosens the clay exponentially. There IS time and place to add water, but you must do so very sparingly to preserve some structural integrity to the clay formation, and this only gets worse the thinner you go. At this size, you want to limit moving the orange shaping tool to only as far as the desired interior to the bottom. And the rest needs to be pushed upward to generate wall formation and quickly after going a bit higher with directing clay with your hands, more inward, to form more inward overhang. Remember to pace yourself or you might go too fast for even results and control strength of the shape change of rate. Do not collapse it all the way because you want it open still, and most of this sort of procedure you want to do by hand than tool.
